Should it be legal....?

I don't care what anyone does, I just wish people wouldn't brag about their illegal bikes here. Doesn't seem a lot to ask.

When kids brag about pirate downloads on a web site, they are asked to keep their daring deeds to themselves since they are illegal. Given that there is no moderation on this site, it would be nice if some people could show a little self-restraint. I think that's all that is being said.

Informative, nice thread.

The Tongxin mentioned early on isn't a very powerful motor by e-bike standards anyway, there are legal e-bikes sold by major names which use far more powerful setups. My legal one has a bit more power than that top figure you mentioned.
.
So, what we're really debating isn't illegality or legality but rather appropriateness of intended use.

I would concur that a cycle with a 2000watt motor and a top speed of 35mph is inappropriate for use on cycle lanes or on the road without insurance/registration and a crash helmet. The fact that it would be illegal if unregistered/uninsured doesn't matter to me.

The law is not a measure of whether something is appropriate to use or even if it's safe.

The law says it is illegal to do 80mph down the M55 at 2am. What it doesn't say is that it's unsafe to do 80mph down the M55 at 2am.

..........and this, members of the forum, is why we are going to lose the ebike freedoms that we currently enjoy. No matter what you advocate, there will always be people who will do what they want to do, when and where they want to do it. They are cocooned in a strongly held belief that only their immediate personal needs are important and that the consequences of their actions on other people are of secondary importance. Any attempt at pointing out the ileagl nature of their actions is usually met by them quoting examples of wrong doing by other people. They try to find cases of law breaking that are in, their opinion, more serious than their own. Armed with this, "evidence" they then assume the moral high-ground and contrast their trivial law breaking with that of more serious crime committed by real villains.

The truth is that theses people are damaging the reputation of ebikes and their users. As they continue to grow in number, the rate of damage will also increase. And the awful thing is, as in a lot of other areas of society, they simply do not care. As long as they can continue to point the finger at others and satisfy their own immediate desires, they will do so.
That's another great post Tillson. It's wasted on the moronic minority among us though who believe they are clever enough to choose which laws they wish to obey and which they don't. The arrogance of these cretins is breathtaking sometimes. It seems there is no shame any more!

No need to be offensive.

I thought we were having a civilised debate here and frankly calling someone a moron or cretin just because they have a different point of view is not on.

Resorting to insults is a clear sign you are losing the debate.

Anyone who accuses forum members of being "moronic" should be banned from the forum!

Very true. The 70 mph limit was introduced when the braking, handling, stability, lighting, mirrors and crash protection of the average car were pathetic compared to that of the cars we have now. Clearly if viewed as a measure of safety it was either wrong then or it's wrong now.

In any case, that 70 dual carriageway limit was a fuel saving measure to help cope with the Arab oil crisis at the start of the 1970s. It had been previously trialled as a safety measure in the mid 1960s but subsequently scrapped so presumably found to be unnecessary.

I don't agree, polite free speech comes first. Any action should be taken against the offensive, not as a punishment of everyone.

I concur.

"Sir, I may not agree with what you say but I will defend your right to say it".

As long as it's said in a civilised manner of course!

Good God......I come back from a nice sunny bike ride to find WW3 has broken out !

There is absolutely no excuse Indalo to start calling people moronic cretins, I am all for giving people a second chance but your previous ban doesnt seem to have moderated your behaviour or language one little bit.
Your original post seemed to me to be deliberately provocative, just intending to wind people up....
As Flecc has said......polite free speech is the name of the game and you just dont seem to be able to keep within normal polite boundaries.
I think you should apologise before you get cast out into the wilderness again for good.....

I like the footnote Wurly, visions of someone pedalling at over the 60 mph national limit.

I can see the headlines now... LEATHER CLAD EBIKE PENSIONERS RIOT IN BRIGHTON WORST RIOTS SINCE MODS AND ROCKERS IN THE 60s, riots caused by reduction in cold weather allowance, Chief Constable says we are using the Subaru Impreza in an attempt to catch these law breakers but it is proving so difficult to keep up with these high powered monsters

Agreed, i can't stand people who won't obey the law especially, the terms and condition of this site.

Quote from RSScott:

the ban was due to a conversation that was disrespectful of another member, therefore was a breach of the T&Cs and led to a number of complaints.

As far as I can see, the real problem if you're caught riding an illegal e-bike is, you could be charged with riding a motorised vehicle with no insurance, the consequences are points on your licence and a very hefty increase on your car/motorcycle insurance. If you didn't have a motorcycle licence you could also be charged with riding a motorised bicycle not in accordance with your licence. That would apply to those of you riding an Alien Aurora or a wisper with the off road thingy, not just Frank's bikes. It could also have consequences for anyone who is banned from driving if it's decided your bike is a motorised vehicle. It will probably never happen but it might.

I'm making no judgments on anyone I thought about an Aurora before I got my bike but I decided to go legal.
