these 2 players throw their hands at anything techy and IMHO that can only be a good thing as it adds choice and helps to bring forward technical advancement.

And hopefully more public awareness and acceptance.

Not too happy about using my phone as an interface. Some phones are a bit pricey and to have them attached to the bars....
Frankly it is not a good idea at all.
How waterproof are phones, and just how easily snatched off whilst passing some yobbo? (I imagine if that occurred, the bike would stop)

Actually the new s5 is supposed to be waterproof, and Samsung are really good at integrating their products. I have a galaxy phone and it's really easy to instantly view photos and videos on my Samsung TV. It also has a health app built in that counts steps, cycling, running, hr and loads of other stuff, so I expect it will be very good!

Why didn't our correspondent in Shanghai get this story?

Head turned by a couple of bonny Chinese lasses by the sound of it.

If I was his editor, I'd sack him when he gets back home.

My Sony Xperia ZR is waterproof as well, I think we'll see more phones going down this route.

It seems I am being squeezed out of more & more because I don't have a mobile phone. Why is it pesumed every one has one of the dammed things.

If it could be securely fitted I would definitely like the controllability. I wish the bosch system was More controllable with graduated help rather than the 4steps..
The previous Bosch system - as fitted to my AVE - has three levels within each level, making 12 in all.

Trouble is they duplicate and overlap, so tour 3 is higher than sport 1 but about the same as some other setting, and so on.

Fiddly and over-complicated - I can see why they dropped it.

The current system - as fitted to my Rose - is much better in use, although five or at most six evenly spaced steps might be better still.

Samsung has a bad habit of making their products only compatible with their handsets, hopefully they wont be so stupid as to do it with a bike, or even better make the handset interface optional.

The new Bosch Nyon display will enable you to have more control over pedal assist. However until more information is released and some bikes are available with it we will not know how adjustable this will be. Alot of bikes will have it although this year I am only aware of KTM release some models with it (only performance models at the moment inc. new full suspension KTM).

Is it likely to be backwards compatible do you think?

On 2014 bikes yes retro fit likely on pre-2014 bikes possibly, if you recall you could change pre-2013 bikes display to intuvia but the walk feature would not work. However the rumours I have heard suggest it will be quite expensive so a retro fit may cost £500 excluding fitting. I will ask the question but I imagine it will not be available seperately until next year. At the moment I am only aware of it appearing on some KTM bikes so the likelhood of them selling it seperately before it is more widely available is unlikely. I will see what I can find out.

Amen to that!

I too have no real need for a smartphone, being retired I can do anything I need to do online at home. When I'm out doing other things, those other things are what I'm doing, not behaving like a zombie permanently locked to internet communication at the expense of the quality of everything else. Nor do I need to be constantly chattering with or texting others.

Too many things are being inconveniently tied to smartphones, parking charges being a blatant example.

The most pathetic illustration of the excess and abuse of communication is the creation now of talkbots. These are software robots to maintain communication with all the friends someone has on Facebook because they no longer have enough time to communicate with all the excess of online friends they have.

A full circle into utter pointlessness!

I have no idea what intuvia is.. I know that on mine the walk feature doesn't seem to do anything at all.
Intuvia is the display on Bosch bikes which is on later models 2013+ (i.e. the one where you have the walk mode and buttons to adjust assistance by your left hand grip, it does not work if you retro fitted the display on pre 2013 bikes). You use walk mode to make it easier to push the bike.

It's something that people on the wireless often talk about. It's supposed to worth lots of money, but I've never seen any Facebooks appear on the Antiques Roadshow. Even Amazon haven't got any Facebooks for sale.
