Helmets with jawguards protect teeth - I'm pretty sure I would have lost yet another one at least by now, if I hadn't used a (cheapo) jawguarded helmet - cheers @soundwave for the tip! I've landed on my head three times so far, it may happen again. A top hat lid type doesn't protect the lower side of the face, or jaw and/or teeth. For eyewear, I just wear cool shades.

As I see it, ride sensibly and safely then there is no need for specialist or ott thrill sports protection, It is speed that does the damage.
For off road or thrill seeking riding then yes some protection is needed but for most riders it simply imv isn't needed.

, who with camera evidence, show that speed and inapropriate riding likely induces the issue they have with incidents,
Yes Neal, but is not true to say you still could do the 15.5mph limit and still hit the head as hard as if travelling at say 25mph, but prob not as much forward momentum as 25mph?

I've never worn any in 70 years of cycling. Since I am no longer cycling, I can truthfully say it has never been necessary.

Like Nealh I ride sensibly according to the circumstances, never regarding cycling as a risky pursuit.

After all, the first 23 years of my motorcycling was also bare headed with no injury, so protection for my cycling would seem very OTT.

Agree with you flecc one rides to the conditions, if it is fast downhill riding then a lid may be deemed essential. Even if I ride a 160k predominantly offroad route I may take a hard hat but not wear it unless I deem it is needed.

That's because of insurance and liabilites to operate as a venue.
I have no need or any intention to ride in a false man made setting , so prefer to use nature natural resources in my location where the riding is all free.

I agree, except that roads are false man made settings.

That being so, means I weigh up the risk as to my safety and whether not to wear a hat or not. The fact I tend to ride in non sporty clothing and where a simple hat likely means I'm afforded more room then someone wearing a helmet and dashing about at speed.

Once the whole country goes down the route which the Welsh assembly is taking and every hamlet, village, town & city becomes a blnaket 20mph limit, cycling will then become a lot safer as well.

Not all unexpected events can be anticipated. When I landed headfirst helmeted during this (I admit highly unlikely) unexpected accident, I would have had a broken head as well as the broken wrist. Badgers are less expected than the Spanish Inquisition.

Mips cycle helmet with wrap around sunglasses. I was given a pair of Puma RX05 with 3 sets of lenses in good nick, now looking to source the prescription lenses that fit behind.

Non MIPS helmet to blend in and as protection from sun. I rarely use straps.
Sunglasses as UV, wind and insect protection.

Same goes for my local cycling club - no helmet no ride. We're talking gentle leisure riding, not racing, by the way.
I can understand the risks are slightly higher in a group - from the rest of the riders, not traffic - but I'd be happy to sign a disclaimer saying I'm riding at my own risk, but no.
That's why I don't cycle with them. Shame really, but hey - it may be their loss too, not just mine. ;)

Is a MIPS helmet really really needed for ebiking or would just a normal non MIPS helmet be just as reliable from saving the head/brain from damage on a fall?
I currently have a non MIPS, and never had a fall from grace. Its wrong that the makers charge extra for safety as in the price between MIPS and non MIPS.

How were you hoping they develop safety improvements without you paying a little extra to cover their costs? That's not how business works, unless the government chip in. Fat chance.

Standard cycle helmets are built to survive 15.5mph impacts - not being hit by other vehicles, so a normal non-MIPS helmet is generally OK for saving you from yourself.

However, MIPS is specifically for minimising any twisting motion on impact, which isn't any part of bicycle helmet testing as far as I know.

Angled hits to the head (which would cause a twisting motion) are in the very latest motorcycle helmet tests , and motorcycle helmet design is generally ahead of cycle helmet design - hence why I would personally favour a MIPS helmet. If I had one.

As ever, it's a personal choice.
