No, sufficient modernising hasn't been done, since it's impossible without long term shutdown and replacement. Most of our underground system is an antique, the penalty of being first.

To neatly sum up, not possible with poor air quality thoughout the whole system, including the four deep lines through sharing the same stations. At least 80% of it needs shutting down for a total rebuild, but of course that isn't possible. So we're stuck with the history, including the Central Line which was built for steam locomotives pulling the underground trains.

Yes, they stayed with "steam locomotives", kept it old school, none of this new-fangled electric rubbish. Like Londonium overall, founded in 50AD, it has hardly changed at all since then, coz it just "isn't possible"?
