Hi,

There were about 8 (police officers/support officers) stopping cyclist who were jumping red lights on a london road (canonbury road). Most of those stopped got on the spot fines. There must have been complaints or something for the police to come out in force to do this

Glad I wasn't there! I always stop at lights but really this is a waste of police time and I would have made my feeling known. Maybe the 8 officers could have been used to educate drivers how to overtake cyclists (ever heard of highway code rule 163 or 212/3?), perhaps they could be used to crack the gangs that steal and sell bikes on the open markets or on gumtree or the drivers turning left without indicating or motorbikes/cars using the advance stop lines. I could go on but you get the picture.

By the way for Londoners there is this site to report antisocial driving etc - please be assured that nobody will get a fine though.

8 sounds a bit too many, but the principle - of stopping anti-social cycling - has to be applauded.

As a cyclist, car-driver, and pedestrian, I am against ALL forms of anti-social behaviour, whoever is doing the misbehaving.

it appears the police are bu**ered if they do anything and bu**ered if they dont.Kids see this and think they can do it too without the road experience of those with more years cycling. Just to say I am not one of there more loved members of the public nor may I add the worst. If I have to deal with an anal retentive I care not whether it wears a uniform or not we are all the same at the end of the day

But surely then, eddieo, they wouldn't be doing anything illegal/antisocial?

Or am I missing the irony here?

But I dont think it is antisocial to begin with, and certainly should not be illegal as long as no pedestrians are crossing and it is done in a slow controlled manor.

If it's a big junction and they're stopping cyclists in all directions then 8 sounds OK, two for each direction. If they're going to make a point then they may as well do it thoroughly.

Agree 100% and just to be clear if I was in charge (and thank goodness I am not) anybody removing a pedestrian's or car's right of way at a light or crossing should have their bike confiscated and crushed. However society has accepted a certain view of anti-social behavior and cyclist are high on that list for their red light antics. However I consider stopping on a yellow line at rush hour to pop into the shops anti-social (I have to negotiate that car while other traffic is unaffected). I consider racing around town at over 30mph or over-taking a bicycle giving the same space as you would a parked car, anti-social. These things are all considered normal behaviour and I wonder whether society has got its perspective right (probably because there are not enough cyclists).

Of course, they were only there prosecuting people because, "they haven't got anything else better to do." It's a well known fact.

Yes busy doing nothing they are masters of the art...

I saw one yesterday looking at a neighbours car..."can I help you" Oh yeah whos car is this? Soooooo I said, Richards at 58, the house it is parked outside? then he said, but it got no tax!?!? I then said. its a private unadopted road if he is not using it, does it need to be taxed? Ugh I dont know was the reply......

last year when my elderly neighbours where burgled by the rapist the police have been after for over 20 years (no surprise there) who cut both our phone lines and their power.... They did not want to know! and said they dont come out for burglary, I had to call 3 times to get some interest

If untaxed it has to have a SORN, (statutory off road notice) wherever it's parked.

Some cyclists in London are dangerous and will plough through crossings full of people when the green man is lit, but lots of pedestrians crossing when they shouldn't be get moody with me for scaring them. They are lucky they only got scared.

They would have picked the junction carefully, it'll be a busy one where there are regular accidents. It's not unusual for junctions to have 10+ cyclist pass through at every change of lights.
If untaxed it has to have a SORN, (statutory off road notice) wherever it's parked.
.
The sorn doesn't need to be displayed and if on private property it's not a police matter. However it was parked in a public place and might still require tax, I've never checked that one.

Oh, and thanks for the heads up, I'll behave this afternoon. :D

If they were doing it as part of accident prevention and education of cyclists at a well known blackspot then fairy snuff. Otherwise I would consider it as a revenue raising exercise, much in the same way as the vast majority of 'safety' cameras are used.

Yes we do get a bad press and people always assume all cyclists are the same as well. Funnily enough last week I went through a green light and a pedestrian walked out in front of me shouting green light. So I stopped to show him yes it was indeed a green light - he did at least say sorry but it shows you how deeply embedded the prejudice is against cyclists.

More well-known facts.

Did you know that most London traffic policemen are Roma gypsies? And they get to keep 75% of all fines they give out.

One earned over £175,000 last year, most of which he sent home to build a villa in the Czech Republic.

Almost unbelievable, isn't it?

ALMOST unbelievable? Certainly hard to prove one way or the other, I suspect. It's not even anywhere near April 1st either.

I'll have to brush up on my Romanian.
