Puffin, there you go thats what happens when you make a posting on this site,we all want your business and obviously are pushing our own products.
I agree with you about suspension forks,in an ideal world I would put solid on all bikes but customers want them. Its the same story with 27 speed gears, they really are not needed on e-bikes but customers demand them,8 gears is enough.
I disagree with those who consider that crank drive is more reliable than hub drive, our experience is the Bafang motor is a very reliable component,we have supplied one service item so far and that would not freewheel the motor still turned.
The reliability issue is definitely about who screws these bikes together, some of the chinese companies are very poor at quality control and some are very good,my experience is that they are only as good as their worse employee. I will agree that the german assembly is often more reliable but you pay for that in the price point, the parts are often still sourced from China so its a matter of assembly which controls the reliability.
You did not state what your price point is,but others have achieved good quality bikes for hire purposes in the region £600-£700.
My customer in Greece is on one of the islands, about Jersey size but much more mountainous,he has arranged at tavernas around the island for customers to exchange batteries, they charge euro 5 for a replacement fully charged battery, its a win-win situation the hirer gets a new battery, the taverna gets an income and those stopping always have a drink/snack-however,this only works if the batteries are cheap. The problem with recharging points is the time, most lithium batterys take 4-5 hours to fully charge and the nature of hirers are that they try to get home on the old battery, usually running out at the bottom of the hill home-LifeP04 is definitely the best battery for this purpose but it exhausts very quickly at the end, possibly from full voltage to bms cutoff in less than 1 mile.
Jersey is actually very hilly so crank drive would probably be the prefered option but there are no crank drive bikes currently on the market at less than £1k and most of them have expensive, short cycle battery life.....but maybe soon!!!!
Whoever or whatever you decide its an interesting project and I hope that you keep us posted as to progress, where are you located on the island?
