The Suntour Nex on the Boardman has manual lockout on the fork not really necessary to have a button on the bars.

Well it seems like I was too quick to judge the oxy odo and for that I apologise. I did a ride yesterday which came up on google maps as 29.2 miles. The oxy odo was zeroed at the start of the ride and despite still showing the KM ledgend, showed 30.1 at the end. I suspect the difference is down to nothing more than the speedo being slightly out as neither of the two 26" wheel settings are bang on but its minimal (seems to be about 0.5mph out on GPS) so its no issue for me.

What this doesnt explain of course is other oxy customers seem sure that their odo still reads in KM even though the speed is set to MPH. Seems a bit strange, maybe I am riding in another dimension!

As an update from me, although I have only done a couple of 30 mile rides, I am really happy with the kit. The last ride was using a lot of assist and was only ever on level 4 or 5 yet I still had 3 bars on my 11Ah battery. As I get fitter this should only get better but for sure the available range is much better than I was expecting, and no running problems whatsoever to report.

Just rec'd my Cree front light today (again thanks to the advice on this forum) so I will be setting that up today :)

Just ran the battery flat for the first time and I got 29 miles on a mix or road and forest tracks all uphill and downhill no flat around my way and this was with the assistance set at level 2 and 3, I'm more than happy.
Am I right in saying I need to run the battery flat at least 3 times to get the best out of it?

  1. o charge the batteryPlease follow these steps when charging your battery:

    •  The battery must be fully charged before the first use.

    •  To charge the battery, plug the power socket into the mains and a round plug of the charger into the

battery socket. Once it’s done, you can plug the charger’s main plug to the electricity socket. It is important that you follow this specific order as connecting the charger’s main plug first may cause a short circuit.

    •  The red light on means the battery is still charging – please do not disconnect it until the green light comes up.

    •  The green light on means the battery is fully charged.

Can anyone make head and tails of this?

I'm going to check with Andre where that came from, but in the meantime I say that that might no longer be valid.

What it's saying is to plug the charger into your battery before connecting it to the mains. The light on the charger will be red when charging and green when finished.

The problem that I see is that when you plug the charger into your battery without it being powered from the mains first, you get an inrush of current from the battery to the charger that can damage the battery. The inrush makes a spark that can weld part of the charge socket to the charger jack. When you pull out the jack, the part of the charger socket comes with it and shorts out on another part of the socket, which makes a very big flash and leaves you with a difficult repair to your battery.

Hi d8veh
That will be great if you can find out.
I'm just not sure what is the right way to charge the battery,
Do I plug the charger into the mains first or plug the charger upto the battery first then plug it into the mains then turn the mains on, it's just not clear.
The info came from the oxydrive website.

I would plug the charger in to the mains first so that it is active before you plug it into the battery.

Hi
Thanks for that, and that was what I did.
What do you think the best way is to unplug the charger?, I now have a full battery.

Unplug the charger fom the battery, then switch it off at the mains.

Has anybody rebuilt an 8fun hub motor? I've done about 1000miles on mine now and its got a squeak when freewheeling. Its also noticeably noisier than when new.

Still a brilliant piece of kit. I overtook a 'hardcore' roadie yesterday evening. When stopped at traffic lights I was accused of 'cheating' (in a fun sort of way). First time in 8 months!

Which one is it? They've used four different 8fun motors.

That eliminates one of the four. Is it the 11Ah kit or the 13Ah kit?

Mine is the 11amp non high torque kit and unfortunately it has also developed a 'squeak' after just 140 miles. Its also intermittant which makes locating the source even harder, especially when it only happens when I am on the bike. The frequency does change with wheel rpm so that may help diagnosis but I am unsure yet whether its a spoke tension or motor issue. The noise can also change to something like a 'graunch' too, and sometimes it stops completely for a bit. Rather frustrating as I found the kit really quiet when first installed. In fact, I felt the motor was far quieter than expected. If I had a clue on how to check/adjust spoke tension I would give it a go but its one area I dont want to go near as theres every chance I could make it worse. I dont know if Halfrauds would take it on either.

mine also developed a squeak but it functions as well as always so I just took it as one of those things, can one ignore it or does one have to do something?

That means that you have the large CST motor rather han the small one or the newer SWX02CST, which are used on the 11ah kits.

Now that we know what you have, it's easy to answer your question. Yes, it's easy to service that motor because the side-plate can easily be removed by undoing the 6 screws after removing the axle nuts.

Here, I just opened up mine and took some photos for you:

Are you sure that the sqeek isn't coming from your brake?

What an awesome reply!!

Thank you!

The squeak on mine is specifically when the motor is freewheeling with no power applied. I've ordered some new tyres today so when they arrive during the week i'll strip it and give it a good clean up.

Any recommendations on grease?
