I went out for a ride today to try out the New Nyon. It started off well but then I had issues.
When you press the on button it take about 15 seconds to start up to the main screen. I find the screen to be a bit sluggish. There isn’t an instant response when you tap a button or icon, there is a delay. When dragging left or right to go to other screens it is a lot less responsive than a phone. When you’re on the bike, though, you are more likely to be using the buttons on the controller to move around and select things which doesn’t make it so evident.
I set up a route with the eBike Connect portal as a round trip in my local area. I had some errands to run so set two waypoints for where I needed to go which gave me a route of 12 miles. It chose a different route than I would have. However, it did use more cycle paths than I would have because there were some I didn’t even know about so I was happy with that.
The display is good and the information clear. The colours certainly help with clarity. The maps are quite clear and you can move around on the map and zoom in and out. I did find on a couple of occasions there was a slight lag with the map showing me where I was on the route and consequently passed a couple of turnings so had to turn round. I guess as I get used to this it will become less of a problem. The audible beep when there is a turn coming up helps to get your attention if you aren’t looking at the screen. If you are on one of the other screens a notification showing the distance and an arrow for the direction appears overlaid shortly before the turn.
The function on the maps that overlays an area centred on your location to show you what range you can expect in whichever power mode you have selected is very clever and I can see me using that a lot. The only flaw I can think of is I typically do a round trip either from home or from a location I’ve driven to so I would really need to know the area I am able to ride taking into account the return to where I started. It may do that, I just haven’t found anything on there that suggests it can.
After the ride by the time I got inside the ride data had been uploaded to the eBike Connect app and web portal. This is when I started to get problems. I pressed and held the on/off button to turn it off and it wouldn’t. I tried a number of times and it just wouldn’t turn off. I took it back to the bike, thinking that perhaps I needed to turn it off while still in the cradle but, no, it still wouldn’t turn off. In the end I did a forced soft shutdown (hold both the on/off button and the light button down for 30 seconds until it shuts down).
I then restarted it to make sure it would turn off and on properly which it did but then I noticed that it wasn’t connecting to my phone via Bluetooth. I tried everything, restarting my phone, restarting the Nyon, but it just wouldn’t connect. I did a factory reset and that seemed to solve the problem. I connected the WiFi and Bluetooth again and it picked up all the information from my eBike Connect account.
I had bought the Lock function in the app and went to enable that but noticed it was missing, probably due to me having to factory reset it. I had to go into the Store section of the app and Restore the purchase to get it back. I must admit, though, I am a bit nervous of using the lock feature at the moment as I’m not sure if I’ll be locked out of the bike if it decides to play up again.
