And it's what we do in London too, though with a far greater area to deal with than their cities.

For nearly two decades we've spent between £24 million and £56 million a year on London cycling. That's significant, helping to produce the huge growth in London's cycling. However we do have far bigger space and distance problems than the Netherland's cities. London covers 400 square miles and in the central area contains many ancient very narrow streets that cannot allow for bicycle separation. We're also accomodating 9 million resident people, expanding to 22 millions in the tourist season. The Netherlands has nothing remotely like that to deal with, their entire national population is barely double the London resident population alone. Their largest city, Amsterdam, has less than one tenth of the London resident population.
