There's no safety problems at 60mph plus with those V brakes, they are in reality the largest of all the disc brakes and will easily equal any bike disc brake for braking power. The key factors for braking power are disc diameter, pad area and applied pad pressure, and the combination of those factors is best of all on caliper and V brakes which is why the fastest bikes use them. If they weren't safe and effective at high speed at least some would use discs which have only a marginal weight gain as Rob remarks. They also have the safety advantage of removing braking strain from the spokes. applying the braking force almost directly to the road instead of torturing the spokes as disc brakes do.
Fair enough then ... perhaps it's the limited rate of rapid but smooth braking you can achieve on a bicycle per se in the context of the relative lack of protection one typically has when riding it with which poses the psychological concern !

Indeed, and of course for rim brakes to work at their optimum the rim quality, condition and trueness have to be at their best. Once rim wear and maintenance factors are taken into account, discs are a good choice for general bike use and are at their best when hydraulic.

I liked the Brompton conv-e conversion too although it's a special bespoke job not just a standard kit.
As a fan of the Kalkhoff Sahel Compact I was interested to see the 2014 model (Pictured in orange), curious decision to change the battery from the standard Impulse unit. The Focus off-road bike with the inverted Impulse motor and new 17ah xion battery looked interesting. I was also taken by the tiny beatbike - could be great for keeping on a narrow boat and using to get to the shops - perhaps a bit of a niche market?!

well i had a good time at the show, good to put faces to a few names.

I only got to ride two bikes, the ansmann and the eiger (should have been more, but i got distracted by both the misses spending a small fortune and flying through the air into the giant airbag thing (me not the misses) :) )

the eiger is a gem, i was so impressed with the bike on the test track, think i'll get myself somewhere to have a proper ride on one - the nuvinci really worked well, and the bike felt light and manouverable.

the ansmann, very dissapointed with tbh, did anyone else try it? seemed underpowered and poorly built (unlike the 29er on the stand itself which was beautifully put together)
I tried Ansmann at Eurobike and NEC both times felt a little disappointed. We were considering stocking them but apart from excellent guarantee am struggling to justify it. Still a possible brand but just not convinced at the moment which is a real shame. Would be interested to see what others thought?

yeah - i loved the look of it, and the warranty, but the bike felt underpowered, and just didn't seem to knit together well as a bike compared to most others in that price range i've ridden - was hoping it was an abused demo bike or similar, but maybe not.

Not true. I just asked him about it. You can order the kit and it will arrive in a box within two weeks if you want or you can order it through a dealer.

Ah, that's not the impression I got when I spoke to him yesterday. Maybe there is a packaged bespoke offering. The bar extension that the battery is fitted on plus other bits and pieces have been made by a guy somewhere (Grange-over-Sands?). The display model also had holes drilled in the Brompton frame for 'bottle' style mounting. I expect that the small motor fitted into a 16" wheel (that doesn't need the forks widened) with the rest of the standard conv-e kit is what is available 'off the shelf' - maybe extra bits can be added / included by request.

I hadn't thought about disc brakes giving the spokes a hard time, but I think I still prefer them.

No rim wear, doesn't matter if the wheel's out of true, hydraulics are all but maintenance and adjustment free, and the pads last forever for a moderate user like me.

Some final pictures from the show. This bike was about £840 on Roodog Bikes stand. They're a new brand of fairly cheap bikes. I like the colour scheme. Somehow it seem to look just sort of right to me. I think it looked better in real life than the photo.

Here's a fine bunch. Something happened in the gangway just as I took the photo, which explains what you see.

Lastly, Andrew also builds rather nice trikes. This one has a MXUS 500w XF01A motor with twin 48v bateries. The motor is a copy of the Bafang CST. It has amazing torque and could pull Andrew up a reasonable slope with about 90kg on the back plus the 69kg weight of the trike without pedalling. Here it is with our complete stand and all our stuff on the back - frame, walls, carper, chairs etc, etc. It has racks for three electric bikes under that stuff, so we brought the three bikes plus some other stuff on the previous run:

Hi Guys, I am new to this site and must say it is very interesting, lots of different views. I went to 50 cycles last week and came away with an Endeavour 350w. What a great bike, if just goes up hills with out any fuss in Eco or tour for the steep ones. Last week I managed to get 65 miles from a full battery, bearing in mind it had only had 1 full charge. Even with the assist turned off it just flies on the flat, drop a couple of gears and it goes up the smaller hills. I had a KTM Nuvinci but it packed up after 3 weeks from new, not impressed with the gear change. Several times it suddenly left me in high gear on steep hills and then walking the rest of the way. Does any body know of a company in the east midlands who do cycle painting as my wife wants her AVE pimping and painting sparkly pink.
Cheers
Phil

My favourite new item was the Brompton on the Powabyke stand.

The guy I spoke to, I think it was Keith Palmer, said the 250W motor slotted straight into the forks - no need to spread them. Particularly good news if you've got a titanium version to convert.
Hi,

Did you get a chance of seeing it being folded? If so, what did you think being that the battery located at the rear ?

Hi,

Did you manage to get a chance by seeing it being folded with the battery in position? If so, what did you think?

You had to unplug a couple of cables and swing the rear battery mount round 180 degrees. I didn't see it actually folded but this is what I was told.

Good to hear that others share my opinion of my still fairly new bike :-D

With regard to range, I've been surprised actually, although I do still plan to get another battery, and did even before I bought it.

Good to see you at the show Dave. I hope Sunday was better for you.
Both Saturday and Sunday were very busy with us over on the Haibike stand.

Lots of interest, with a certain few bikes catching the public's eye! In particular the -

New 2014 Haibike NDURO Pro

& The New 2014 RACE 28 S Pedelec Road Bike

Thanks to all Pedelec members who came up to the Kudos stand,Ghouluk's feedback was particularly interesting. On the positive side I thought the expansion of ebike suppliers indicated a growing market,I should have taken 10 Kudos Arribas and 10 Kudos Secret bikes such was the waiting queue at peak time to try those bikes.
Despite all the promises in advance the organisers had done nothing to improve the test track, the bends were too sharp, too many on the circuit together, the hill (slope) was a joke and what idiot thought it was a good mix to combine childrens mini road race bikes with heavy ebikes-there were several crashes with the kids, one young girl hurt herself quite badly. These organisers make us exhibitors complete detailed health and safety statements but their own safety considerations are none existent, they haven't the first clue of how to run a safe ebike test track.
They put an 18 year age minimum age limit on testers but did not uphold it,there were many 15 year olds pulling wheelies and with no intention of buying an ebike and the young joy riders were just intent on wrecking the bikes, making genuine testers wait for testing opportunities.
They promised that the stands and the test track booths would be closer together so that we could use stand staff to help out on the test track and visa versa, this didn't happen.
Unless they improve the track considerably and introduce some sort of filter on the seriousness of the tester and eliminate the joy riders I won't be taking Kudos back to the show. Definitely we will introduce a coupon system on the stand to restrict testing to serious potential Kudos ebike customers and filter out the joy riders.
We will be assisting the London Electric Bike company's stand at the London Excell Cycle Show, the organisers provided a wonderful indoor test track last year with wide sweeping bends, non slip surface and padded crash barriers on all corners-they know what they are doing, but sadly no hill.
London Electric Bike will have Kudos,KTM,Haibike,BH and a new range called Vita plus a £6k carbon frame ebike-all testing will be by prior appointment using a voucher system.
It's a shame that we cannot combine our Redbridge event with a higher footfall, that test track is just so good for testing ebikes but we don't have the marketing budget to attract the numbers.

Phil, could you please advise which KTM Nuvinci model you had the problem with? I spoke to the KTM importer today and they were not aware of any problems with the Nuvinci model.
I have a customer who is very interested in the KTM Nuvinci and before I place an order on the importers would be useful to have further details of your problems.
Perhaps you could put some dates to your purchase and advise who was the dealer?
I must say that all my involvement with the Nuvinci hub has been positive with almost bomb proof reliability and very quiet operation. One of the Pedelec members described the new Kudos Eiger with TCM crank motor and Nuvinci hub as an absolute gem and £1000 less than the nearest opposition and its UK road legal!!!!
Really interested in further info on your KTM Nuvinci problems.

I spoke with a few people about the Nuvinci, and one or two had the same problem as me, which is easy to sort out. The two cables have nipples on the end that are locked in place with grub-screws. The nipples are quite small and the grub-screws are tiny, so when you lock them off, you worry about stripping the thread or breaking the hex key, resulting in the lock not being tight enough. Later, under high load, the cable slips so you can't change gear. Three seconds with the hex key, and it's fixed, so if you're worried about it, just make sure that the nipples are locked extra tight before you let them out of the shop.
