I never wear a helmet , because in my opinion , up to now ,these helmets have been unfit for purpose . Firstly they appear to protect only the top of the head .They aught to carry a sticker saying "Caution , whilst falling of your bike , ensure that you hit the deck with the top of your head first ."
They would work if you went horizontally into a wall ................ like an Exocet missile!

You can tell it's a rainy day................good grief it's snowing!

Those like me who don't wear them needn't say anything, their presence shows they haven't been killed.
Surely those who have been killed would find it difficult to offer any sort of meaningful feedback on the pros and cons

It might seem that way, but with a grand total of just over 100 cyclist deaths each year in Britain, most of those not from head injuries and on average 27% wearing helmets anyway, the number of non-wearers killed through head injury is tiny. Those who might have posted in here will be 0.008% of that tiny number, based on the proportion of the forum membership against Britain's population. i.e. a tiny fraction of one person.

Compared with Britain's cyclists only, it's still only 0.4% of the non-helmet wearing head injury killed proportion of the circa 100, so still only a very small part of one person. Basically it means we might at most get one relevant poster in that class in 25 years.

While neither The Lady Wife nor myself wear a magic hat, I can quite see the point of youngsters being made to wear them (if in fact parents are still allowed to make their kids do anything) until they're old enough to be relatively sensible.

I do though wonder where it's all going to end. Only last week we drove through Tunbridge Wells at school-leaving time and were stopped at a pelican crossing as some kiddies and their mums crossed. The last mum across shephered her two kids over in front of her on their scooters. The scooters were the normal cheapo plastic ones, and the kids were probably 6.

They were both wearing kids' cycling helmets ...

Personally, I think helmets should be a banned topic.

Regardless of your own view on them, you are never going to convince the other side. And why should you try. Some of us do not want saving.

The helmet debate causes more wars than religion and politics on cycling forums. It does not even raise healthy debate because we are all sick to the back teeth of it.

Steve, I was only pointing out a new type of helmet as you would point out a new make of bike, is that so wrong?

I wear a helmet on the grounds that the potential protection they offer for me outweighs the potential pitfalls, i.e some cushioning in a crash vs messed up here. Um, a degree of crash protection please.

Those who don't can do what they like, it's their head.

Says it all Scotty, only a full-face one really does the job, and for cycling that's not practical.

I was in some trails and lost it down hill. Needless to say the helmet saved the top left of my head.
The rest of my face then took the impact.

4 stitches and a chipped tooth later. I'm back on it.

I now wear a full face everywhere... But the chances of the same thing happening again... very slim.
