what are peoples opinions on this?

I notice some of the retailers who post on here are members, and some brands.

is it worth joining? I know what it claims to do, but what does it actually do?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers
Col
Hi Col, you would be most welcome of course. We need as many voices and as much help as possible to push the electric bicycle business forward in the UK.

We currently have 10 full and 10 retail members and new members joining every month.

Any professional retailer or manufacturer is more than welcome to apply.

All the best

David

Speaking entirely as a lay person, I think the activities of BEBA are not only a good thing, but fundamental to the ongoing success of the industry as a whole.

In an industry like E-bikes, the co-operation of the legislators and town planners has to be positive to provide the long term cycling infrastructure that we all want. Mass markets, especially for the elder incumbents, will not flock to their local E-bike dealer if they perceive the activity is dangerous.

We live in a society where those who make decisions regarding law and planning are rarely qualified or experienced in the subject matter. They are placed in such positions by way of political influences, and rarely are they able to bring any degree of expertise or enlightenment to the matters at hand.

Accordingly, they are obliged to take advice from "interested parties" in order to reach a supportable policy. BEBA, or some such similar entity is essential if that advice process is to take place, and be coordinated enough to be meaningful. Without this joint effort we will have no influence on the decisions that affect us, and our industry will remain alone in the doldrums of bureaucracy for eternity.

My other hobby of flying homebuilt aeroplanes would not exist were it not for the stalwart efforts of the Light Aircraft Association. By way of constant lobbying and intimate knowledge of the subject matter, they have secured a workable legislative framework that maintains high safety standards, yet provides sufficient flexibility to enable nutters like me to build an aeroplane in my shed and enjoy the pleasures that flight provides.

BEBA, in my opinion, is fundamental to obtaining the cycling environment we all want. Of course there will be differences of opinion from time to time, concerns over vested interests and the like, but if we want to grow into the mass market, we really don't have an option. Accordingly, I support the motion to join and lobby together.

I don't think self-builders need have anything to fear, and I point to the UK's kit car industry in that connection. Despite no organisation to represent kit car makers, the DfT have treated them very generously, exempting them from all the more onerous requirements on major car makers.

I see no reason why the DfT would have any different an attitude to home builders, especially as e-bikes are not regarded as motor vehicles in law but just as bicycles. Therefore I'm confident that any possible attempt by BEBA to institute discriminatory measures would be resisted, and very much doubt BEBA would even be interested in this small sector.

After all, in the mainland EU where EN15194 is fully in force throughout, home builders are very active and the testing requirements of that law do not apply to them.

Therefore I think F.U.D is not necessary, given such precedents.
I refer to this thread:
http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/two-years-inside-for-supplying-non-un38-3-batteries.14912/

That caused me to spend several hours reading up about UN regulations on the transport by land, sea, air of lithium batteries and the exemption from DG9 class when the battery is installed on the bike.
I made three posts on this thread just to stop the F.U.D.

You did indeed Trex, preventing overly severe interpretations of the regulations. But of course BEBA were not involved in making the restrictions. Quite the opposite, they are currently trying to do something about the threat to include bikes with batteries fitted in carriage restrictions, so at least providing us with a voice.

Without them there would no doubt be no opposing argument, just as there was none with the EAPC legal anomalies in earlier years.

This morning Spencer Ivy, joined BEBA as a full member. We all welcome Peter Claxton and thank him for his support.

We now have 11 full members (manufacturers and distributors) and 10 retailers, on top of the support from BAGB and the Motor Cycle Industry Association.

We will be holding our AGM on the 26th February. We would welcome any new members who would like to attend.

If you are interested in helping to create and run an association that gives the electric bicycle industry a voice, please drop me a line. dmiall@me.com

Best regards

David

A big Welcome to Col and the KTM guys to BEBA! BEBA is really gathering speed now. Bosch are a fantastic new member, really getting into the spirit of the community.

I also welcome the guys from Cycling Made Easy and Green Powered Bicycles as retail members.

All professional Electric Bicycle retailers, manufacturers and national distributors are welcome! Please email me at membership@beba.info for details.

All the best David

I have to say that we did indeed join, but there aren't many things we've spent company money on this year that I think have been a bigger waste..

Is anyone in the trade here actually thinking their membership fee has been in anyway useful to them as a company, or even to eBike marketing in the UK generally?

We're shocked that they haven't been in touch with us about the current consultation about the regulation changes.

It appears us and other brands are talking, and submitting comments but BEBA should be presenting an input on this consultation and we'd have thought that they'd contact their members about this to get their input?

Or do we have an unrealistic expectation of what BEBA should be doing?

Hi

We are indeed involved, we were at the first consultation meeting and made the case for the throttle which is being adopted.

For any association to be successful it needs members to attend meetings.

There is a lot happening, it will be announced very soon.

We have not be able to attend BEBA meetings. They are always appear to clash or sometimes appear at short notice. Would be nice to be able to link up virtually which would also be more green :)

However my crticism would be that there is some who is supposed whose role is Retail Liaison however I have never even had an email regarding our needs, and therefore ensures we are kept in the loop. Although if I had something to input I could contact BEBA. However more pro-active communication would be welcome

Hi David.

Thanks for getting back to me.... I appreciate this is a public forum, but with the heavy trade presence I thought these comments were worth sharing for discussion, which will I hope benefit.

Please don't take this as a personal criticism, I'm just trying to get my head around things, and have some questions.

If you (with your BEBA) hat on have been asked to input into this consultation process, is there a reason why BEBA haven't sent a quick email to the members to have our input? Otherwise it could be seen that its not BEBA commenting, its FWG surely?

Regarding your points about meetings, we asked, about meetings - and we've been told since we started there haven't been any.

I'm sure there is a lot planned, and we look forward to hearing whats planned... it would be great to be involved! Thats why we paid up!

Regards
Col

Please give me a call anytime, I will explain all, we just can't go public at the moment.

Even though there are only a few members who get involved working with the DfT etc, there is a lot going on.

We are Woking to the remit given to us at the last meeting.

Just had a full replacement hip fitted so off work for a few days, therefore am available at any time.

All the best David

Many thanks David.

I appreciate your reply.... I'm not going to call today, because I've got a lot going on. But it would be great if you could send on the details of your meeting with the meeting with the DfT, and the remit of your role and let me know how we become one of the "few members who get involved" as so far we've literally had zero from BEBA, and its not for a lack of trying on our behalf.

Nobody knows what's going on inside this trades body. BEBA seems to me a pet project of DM and Batribikes - beside flecc's, I've never seen a post by another member of BEBA.

Hi Trex, you are correct, along with Juicy and Hero, we do most of the work for the sake of the whole industry.

We are currently working on other projects such as the speed Pedelec class. Trying to get if through ASAP, before someone is injured by one. There are a lot of illegal Pedelecs being sold in the UK, bad publicity following an incident will put cycling in general back years.

I hope everyone understands we do not get paid to do this work and pay all our own expenses. We are Working not for our individual companies but for the industry as a whole.

All the best, David

Hi David.

Sorry I didn't call, but I was pleased to get a call from BEBA and we had a good chat about what could be improved and how. I have to say I appreciate the limitations that everyone is working within. I've made some suggestions and I hope that we (KTM) and others will be included more moving forwards, so that the pressure and workload for you guys isn't as high.

Certainly the email thats landed in my inbox just now looks like a really positive step, and we will be at the meeting and I hope others will also be able to come despite the relatively short notice.

Onwards and upwards, we hope :)
