Having three cats ourselves, we're always finding neighbourhood cats in the back garden, either looking for a fight, or trying to sneak in the back door for a free feast.

We were getting tired of chasing off these unwanted cats, and a jug of water is time consuming and not always accurate.
Whilst dusting off a laptop keyboard, I inadvertently discovered that cats absolutely hate this thing:

Compressed Air.jpg

My lot scattered when I was using it on the keyboard, coz it make a loud hissing sound.

Now every time an unwanted pussy thinks they can muscle in on my patch, a quick press of the button sends them scarpering :D

Now, where did I put those bear traps....

A friend with a similar problem built a garden sprinkler system activated by motion sensors. He only needed it working for a week before the cats found a new playground/toilet.
He keeps the system in place & turns it on every few months just incase ;)

I recommend the ultrasonic emitters. They often have bad reviews as people don't realise they are not an overnight solution. The noise emitted tends to annoy cats which can promote a change in their behaviour but this can take up to a month to see results with the cats that regularly enter the area.

We retired ours two years ago when we got our own cat but it definitely made the difference to the cats that we're constantly digging up the beds to do their business in.

If you let a dog out it will do it in your garden.. but if you let a cat out it will do it in someone else's.. Does that mean cats are a more intelligent?

I don't have a problem with the local cats since buying the RSPB recommended cat scarer. They still come though on their regular patrols but when they pass my little box they hurry on past.
We used to get regular cat soiling as soon as anything new was planted in the borders, but nothing for 2 years now.

I have a dog..... if a cat enters my garden my dog will kill it if he catches it.
But some cats will still chance their luck, so they cant be that bright.

One of my mates has a small aggressive dog that absolute hates cats so they keep away... unless the patio doors are shut when one comes and sits outside them watching the dog go berserk.

My dog isn't aggressive, he doesn't fight with other dogs and loves all people...... but something instinctive switches on when he sees a cat and has to chase it. Most of the time they are too fast for him, but when he does catch one, just one bite will dispatch them.

We live by a railway embankment with a drystone boundary wall so have plenty of rats and mice. One of my neighbours had a big old lazy cat that could hardly move and it would sit in our garden for hours watching for one to come through the wall. I don't think it ever cought any but it seemed to act as a deterrent because we never saw any while it was about. We nicknamed it ever ready and it never pooped in the garden.. so they are not all bad..
