How far does your battery go?

I recently rode 31 miles and climbed 3500 ft! But can go much further with careful route planning. How far does yours go? This ride can be checked out on strava, but due to posting KOM's I have to make my Hill climbs private.

You could change it to a work-out briefly to let people review it, before changing it back to a private ride again. Or just make it public for a while with a note in the description to say it will be removed shortly. I've not had a ride flagged for quite some time now.

You must also be a strong cyclist ?

What battery are you using?

I wouldn't say I am a strong cyclist, I would say I know how to get the best from my bike! Battery is Bosch 36v 400Wh Li-ion and ride can be viewed here but to view the detail I think you need to be logged in to Strava..

I didn't consider this to be exceptional and was actually a bit disappointed that it was flat when I got home..

Ah yes, it's the average speed. Still a very useful range and allows you to get up those hills. E-bikes are fantastic aren't they :)

arent they just! I have never tried the hub powered variety which I assume need a throttle to operate. What I like about mine is... if you dont pedal it, it wont go anywhere, and if you get out of the saddle and push hard it will fly!!

Indeed they do, yours will be a bit faster than mine, I've got a Nexus 8 hub, so a little loss there and the Bosch motor is turned down a bit to stop it breaking the hub. I love the way they're just like an ordinary bike, except easier, I also love the position of the power switch, I use all 5 settings dependant on terrain. Or for shorter ones just Turbo of course :D

Now that is interesting.. I had a Genesis IOID Alfine 11 and wanted to fit the Sunstar system, but they couldn't provide a small chain-ring suitable for a mountain bike, so had to let that go.. I assume you can more easily change gear under power with the hub gears.. Its one of the areas I struggle with. Have you considered the speed dongle?

Actually changing gear on the hub is worse, it simply won't change gear under load. The knack is to briefly pause pedalling and then change gear, if you haven't got the knack you can have some nasty noisy cringe worthy changes.

Yes I have a speedup ghost on mine, it makes the bike 100 times better. :)

Mine is out of warranty soon so may contact you for advice if that's ok...

Don't forget to have a look at the Badass dongle.

Much simpler than the hot wired ones and does the same job.

Mine has worked faultlessly for several months now, no error messages or other glitches.

Only downside - like all dongles - is it knocks the speedo out of kilter above about 12mph.

Hi Phill,

Interesting post.

With regard to hub motor systems some are purely pedelec but many are dual mode i.e. ebike and pedelec so that you have choice of using a throttle or just pedal or both. There are also centre crank drive systems which have throttle e.g the 8Fun BBS-01/02.

The biggest hurdle is getting old! I still want to go out and have fun, but the hills just kill me and crawling along in the granny gears just doesn't work for me. Now I can go anywhere and still get a good workout without risking a heart attack on the Hills. I recently cam across someone on a hub driven bike and couldn't catch him and he wasn't pedaling!
