where does that leave all those who bought bikes before the new changes take effect? Will these bikes automatically become illegal and liable to seizure?
The goverment has already said that the new laws won't be retrospective so existing bikes won't be affected.

Hi Guys

The thread petered out as it became less and less likely this incident really happened.

We at BEBA have learned that due to something called "Grandfather Rights" people who own electric bikes with throttle etc when the new legislation comes into force will not be open to prosecution.

All the best

Well, that will immediately be challenged when the first Grandmother is prosecuted for using a throttle in public. Don't dear little old Grannies have rights too?

I really have no idea Eddie, we have a BEBA meeting in Westminster next week so hopefully things will become a little more clear.

I will keep you posted, but I would not hold your breath!

Things are certainly getting tougher in Europe now though, our dealers are all asking for our EN15194 certificates.

For those who have not seen one

even then the cops have to justify whether their action is proportionate.

is this a younger person riding aggressively / on pavements / where cycling is prohibited and telling pedestrians to get out of their way? that will eventually result in bother from cops even on a push bike as its anti-social behaviour. he may even have come to notice to cops for other crime if they are putting that much effort into getting him...

about 10 years ago there were those illegal monkey bikes in the same areas (both petrol and electric) so cops do know how to deal with them - so if course if the cops happen to find something defective about the vehicle they can impound it but I still find it hard to believe a normal 250W bike would get users in trouble.

I was no goody two-shoes in my youth and spent a lot of time getting up to all sorts in TVP, Hantspol and Surpol areas (mostly rave-related) but there was still an "unwritten code of practice" with cops and if you weren't really harming anyone else they didn't bother you and if they did bother you on the road there was often a good reason for it..
I think Alex has hit the nail on the head here... if someone acts foolish on an electric bike and annoys others or puts the public in danger, i.e. showing off and bombing up and down the road or on paths, the police have a responsibility and duty to come out and take the bike off the road.

Normal responsible bike riders such as the people who frequent this forum shouldn't worry, but if people like this individual carry on like this it could ruin it for all of us. :-/
