What options are there to replace the derailleur with a gear hub to go with a bafang bbs01 250w mid drive kit? Are they easy to install and are there any options to allow gear changes whilst stationary. At the moment i am always in the wrong gear at traffic lights.

Just change down before you stop, eventually it'll become second nature to you:)

Dave.
As I cycle through central london I often have to stop abruptly and a few times I have found myself in the wrong gear and struggled to get the bike moving without some heavy gear crunching

The crank drive is largely irrelevant from a conversion point of view.

You could build a hub gear into a new rear wheel, but you might need to alter or remake the drop outs on the frame of the bike, depending on what it is.

That could be as simple as a bit of filing, or a welding job.

You would probably need a new handlebar shifter, depending on pull ratios of what you have and the new hub.

Cost could easily run into several hundred quid, and it's a lot of fettling however you do it.

Have at look at alfine 8 hub gear. Very nearly bullet proof and sturdier than the nexus 8. Forget the alfine 11 - not as reliable, much more expensive and not needed on an ebike

Conversion all depends on your frame. If the rear dropouts are wide enough (135mm from memory) it's easy enough to do.

But whatever way you slice it I'd be amazed if you can get the whole job done for much under 250. You need at a minimum

Alfine hub
Alfine shifters
Wheel rim
Spokes
Cost of building into a wheel (unless you can do it)

My commuter hybrid bike has alfine 8 and front hub but only really because it was built before the bbsxx and other Chinese crank kits became available.

Starbikes doing new hub at 109 though I found one a couple months back in Germany for 85 delivered.

Shifters are about 18

It's all a part of the lattice of coincidence ( very obscure film reference )
As it happens I've just done the research on the alfine 8 conversion on my 29er wheel and these are some approximate prices using my own rim
Hub £120
Shifters £18
Fitting kit £10 ( goes on to hub to make it shift ! )
Spokes £30
Sprocket £10
Wheel Lacing £30
Earlier this evening I've ordered a "ready to fit" wheel with hub and shifter etc, all for £186. :)

This dose mean that I'll have a 29er 9 speed derailleur wheel set, cassette and shifters up for sale very soon ;)

Just ordered a 26 inch disk brake setup for Me only £178.
The Alfine hub is the recognised second best. (Rolhoff of course)

The Alfine is much more expensive than the Nexus 8 Inter and now that the latter has a "premium" roller bearing version I can't see why not to chose it. All the Alfine bits - click shifter and chain tensioner are compatible with the Nexus too...

Unless I'm mistaken, the Nexus hub dosent accepted a disk brake ;)

You guessed right: comes in rim/coaster brake, roller brake versions!

Edit: looked and no disk brake version. No disk brake is not a problem with hydraulic V-brakes

Great find,thanks.
This means I will be able to use my 32T chainring and adapter as chainline wont be a problem.
Guess I will have to get one ordered ...

what are the internal gear ratios?
i have a 11-34 at the moment with a 46t chainring, how will this Alfine affect things?

New chainring needed maybe?
I was happy with the gear range on my 12/36 9 speed derailleur so I ordered my alfine with a 20 tooth sprocket (see below)
Lifted straight from a bikeradar review page.
The eight-speed gear range is more than enough for regular town and country use. If you’re interested in the numbers, the gear ratios are: 0.53, 0.64, 0.75, 0.85, 1, 1.22, 1.42 and 1.62. With a 20-tooth sprocket on hub, this approximately imitates the gears on a 12-38-tooth cassette.
Here's the full review

Ordered a 26" yesterday as well...

couple of questions - how do you tension the chain, i can`t pull the rear wheel back, don't have horizontal dropouts.

Is there a sprocket option, isn`t your gearing going to be totally different?

Hopefully it takes the 6 hole Disc mounts?

Did you receive yours yet D8ve?

Just got mine. It's the splined disk mount, £10 local bike shop.
I will set the chain length then adjust tension by moving my bottom bracket.
I can do this on my bike.
The control came with a long length of Bowden cable.
And I got the 18 tooth ring, good for me as I like speed ( Agreeing with Fud again?):(o_O:)

Chain tensionner bolts on to your derailleur hanger, also works with nexus 8 inter.

Sprockets are quite cheap I will buy a selection between 16-22 and experiment till I find the right one.

And I haven't :(
I'm not surprised though, a number of emails over a few days to get the 18 tooth sprocket changed to a 20 and then I suppose someone has to physically swap the parts over before dispatch.
Still, I can wait, I've had a lot of experience at waiting ;)

And you don't even have French transporter strikes :(

(waiting on a wheel somewhere in a truck in a long line of trucks)
