Took a very pleasant ride out yesterday up to and around Devil's Dyke.
Made my way up the centre although had to zig zag and traverse the last bit owing to excess mud build up in the rear tyre causing severe lack of traction. Will try again when it's dryer, but even with the 42T up front I reckon it's possible.
The two cyclo-cross seemed surprised to see me appear. Bless them, no
motor and only one gear!
Only out for 50 minutes at lunchtime, but schnuck it in there before the rain arrived.

Then there was this tw*t in a Suzuki Vitara who managed to try and make my life a misery on the 200 odd metres of road I have to take to get from the downs to three cornered copse. What a hand-pump!
I have since reported him to the Police because his actions were no mistake, totally avoidable and apparently intentional dangerous driving if you ask me. Behind the wheel he could be seen to be laughing as if it was funny and he found it entertaining. Please excuse my language, it could have been a lot worse.

Said they'd check him out and gave me a reference number. But we all know how busy they are so can't imagine much if any action will be taken.
Until he runs someone over that is, but in my mind that's too late when the evidence such crap driving and intent has already been presented.

The insurer idea is good. A nice hike in his premiums would be good.

Had a blast in the rain through Joydens wood Bexley today. Carvers in for an MOT so I stuck the bike in the back as it's a zafira. And went for a ride until it was done.

Have had the most enjoyable day plugging through the mud with new tyres.
I am still smiling like an idiot.
It has been such a beautiful day.
The field with the big trees in is impressive they are all at least 8' across if not bigger.

There was no one around !

A slight back issue has kept me away from the bike over the last week, but I couldn't resist getting out tonight for a brilliant ride in the rain and mud.
I did momentarily question my sanity as I was putting the cycle gear on, as the rain pelted against the roof light.
I have never really had an issue with setting out in the rain, as you are going to get wet and muddy at this time of the year anyway, so what the hell.
I was surprised by just how much flood water that there was, and almost regretted taking my usual stream crossing. I usually check the route prior to crossing it, as children often set up stones or sticks across it to make dams. Stupidly I didn't check tonight and just went for it. Somehow I made it up over the stones that had been laid across, but I won't be doing that again.
It was one of those rides where everything just clicked into place, and the Hutchinson tyres must have performed the best that they ever have. I was intentionally trying to hit as many off camber roots etc as I could, but as hard as I tried, the grip just didn't fail. I also have a habit of riding along as many narrow sections as I can to help improve balance and control, and again the tyres just stuck to the ground, as I intentionally tried to ride along the edges. I suspect that because everything was so rain washed, the grip on offer tonight could not of been better. It was one of those ten out of ten rides.

I forgot to add something yesterday.

I'm not sure how it cropped up in my Ebay recommended list, but a month or so ago, a watch and torch combination came up as a suggestion, and more out of curiosity than anything else, I paid my money and bought one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tactical-CREE-LED-1000-Lm-Display-Rechargeable-Wrist-Watch-Flashlight-Torch-L9-/131817459106?hash=item1eb0eecda2:g:i0MAAOSwxehXOsHX

Reason being that almost without fail on every night ride, either myself or the lad that I regularly ride with, will get a twig/branch tangled up somewhere or another. Fine if there are two of you, but a pain when you are on your own and are fumbling around for a secondary torch. ( I don't like helmet mounted lights for my riding)
I also intend to fit Purion to the next bike, and the lack of having a clock is one aspect that I would prefer not to loose for night time riding.

I have been using the watch/light for about a month now, and up until last night, hadn't realised just how much that I had come to depend upon it. This was highlighted as I had left it at home, and came very close to turning back after a mile or so to get it. Sure enough, two trapped branches later, I was regretting not having it even more.

A gimmicky but kind of practical item, and it is a shame that it isn't more compact.

I bought an exposure joystick head torch and its so light, excuse the pun, that you don't notice it. It's fab and i attached the small red light onto the back of it. Great beam for spotting deer at night in local woods.
I also bought the Garmin 820 and always carry my phone. I feel safer as if i crash the Garmin info's the missus via call and gps. Mind you, not sure if she'd rescue me .
I do some bike packing overnight and night rides like yourself. When you cycle alone, you have to be prepared. I found a rider 2 years ago that had crashed and couldn't move. Called ambulance and forestry opened gates to rescue him. Learn from that i thought!

I use View Ranger for this allows the wife to check up on where I am, although no auto crash alerts. Reassuring to know someone can locate you should anything happen, especially on a isolated night ride. Route planning and tracking with OS maps is nice too.
