Duff battery or controller?

Some months ago my Woosh Ellios e-bike developed a problem. When I switch on the controller lights up and indicates a full battery. When I start off the bike moves an inch or two and the motor cuts out. All the controller lights go out. If I switch the battery off and then on again the lights come but the same thing happens. If I lift the back wheel off the ground the motor spins the wheel quite happily. The integral rear light lights as brightly as it always has. The open circuit voltage of the battery a week after having been charged is 40.08v. I have had a look at the controller and all the wires appear to be connected and ther is no sign of any damage or overheating.

When this first happened I contacted Woosh who informed that this bike and battery were no longer supplied. Later I emailed and asked whether one of the batteries that they still supplied could be adapted but had no response. The battery is rear rack mounted and seems to be very similar to one shown on the Woosh website.

Anybody have any ideas, other than chuck the bike in the river!

Andy @ woosh deals with support and he works Monday to Friday. Just wait for him to come back to you on Monday. It seems to me that the voltage of your battery drops as soon as the motor starts. It could be a fault in the battery, the BMS shuts the battery down because of a faulty block in the 10-block string. You can check this if you have a volt meter. Your battery may not have died but could be out of balance, for example after the bike is left unused for a couple of months. In this case, send your battery in for rebalancing. If the battery is found faulty, Woosh normally offer to recell your old Elios battery but recently, they replace them with the same battery for their Petite in 10AH or 15AH. You will need to replace the rack at the same time if you go for this option. The open voltage of 40.08V is a bit too low when fully charged, it should read 41.5V, pointing to a weak block. How old is your battery?
2.5 to 3 years

I would send the battery to Woosh for testing. There are other companies who can recell your battery too.

Although we no longer supply this bike or its battery we can almost certainly offer a solution.
I am puzzled by the fact that you say your email went unanswered.
If I get emails needing tech support I forward them on immediately and it is very rare that we don't reply.
Please send the email again to
Support@wooshbikes.co.uk and Andy should be able to help you.
He won't be there over Xmas (23rd to 4th Jan) so suggest you send it asap.

Can only talk from my own experience but I've had nothing less than fantastic service over a few years from woosh. Not to say anyone is perfect, of course

What you describe sounds like a battery with 1 or 2 knackered cell series out of 10

New battery, or recell time

As trex said, if woosh cannot supply a new one then you do have options

Hatti,

Thanks for getting in touch. I think that when I contacted Woosh some months ago when my Ellios first started to play up it was via the Contact Us facility on your web page. I cannot find any emails to you. Does you system send acknowledgements? I do not appear to have received any emails from Woosh.

I do not know who I spoke to a few weeks ago regarding a new bike but, as I said, whoever it was seemed disinterested. From my research it initially appeared that the Krieger would have been ideal but, being tall, I was concerned re the frame size. If I could have been reassured I would probably have bought a Krieger. The man did, however, tell me that the Sunbear was no longer available.

I have now bought an Ansmann FC1 Plus from Cyclezee. It is a beautiful bike but, unfortunately, It will not get my 110kg frame up the hill to my home. Nor, for that matter, did the Ellios!

I now have a problem. The Ansmann does not do what I want it to do, nor did the Ellios. Even if it were fully operational I would not keep the Ellios. I am therefore trying to sell the Ellios with a duff battery but if I replaced or recelled the Ellios battery I could sell the bike as a working e-bike. However, recelling will be expensive and this option this might not add up financially and so I might end up simply dumping the Ellios. If I were reasonably certain of the Kriegers abilities then I would buy one and sell the Ansmann and absorb the loss.

I was tempted to but a more powerful e-bike with a bigger motor but chose not to do so partly because of the legal ramifications and partly because of the relatively unknown history of the suppliers of such e-bikes.

Any comments?

Mike

I agree with your analysis, the 3-year old £500 Elios may not fetch much second hand even fully working. If you have to buy a new battery for it, you may even end up out of pocket. I did suggest you send back your battery to Woosh for checking. If it only needs rebalancing, then it will be worth the effort.

Mike, please do not take any offence because none is intended. In mid 2014 I was 95 kilos and having problems with my diabetic sugar levels. By the end of that year I was 70 kg and my sugar levels were fully controlled, if not low. A year on I am still 70 kg and sugar levels are still totally controlled after a significant medically approved reduction in medication. I am 70 next year. I have attached a document I did for a sports blog explaining how I was able to lose weight without extreme diet or undue exercise. At 110 kg you are not only testing your bikes, but you are testing your body as well (unless you are over 2 meters tall!) I hope the document gives you some ideas about a "dietary audit" aimed at losing some weight and a brilliant source of information to help you. All the advice from my dietician over 10 years was of no avail until I took matters into my own control. You could be able to help yourself and your bikes both at the same time.[/QUOTE]

We could have the battery back here to check out.
However, you are almost certainly going to have to shell out for recelling (up to £250) so it might not make much financial sense.
The Krieger is not what I would recommend for you as the frame is not that large.
The best one from our range would be the Big Bear LS - it has a robust front motor and sails up steep inclines with ease.

No stock at the moment, but arriving last week of January if of any interest.

I know the problem and I know the solution. Eat less!!!

My weight gain has got worse since I developed a heart problem. Less exercise = loss of muscle. Getting back to a bike is intended to improve my fitness.

Much as I expected/deduced. Perhaps the lack of availability explains the lake of interest. Thanks anyway.

Beats any other cuisine into a cocked hat. Besides, regularly fuelling up with curry provides another form of assist. Useful when the battery is flat.
 Glad I don't have to ride behind you then.
