Do you think I need a new cassette?

I wonder if 10 speed stuff is a step too far, It seems that everything costs double compared with 9 speed. I do like a lot of gears as I use leg power as much as possible but it seems a lot to pay for the privilege of an extra cog. I've tried a friends 10 speed bike and I could certainly feel the difference but not enough to make me want to upgrade. It was a new bike and strangely enough he hadn't noticed it was a 10 speed!.
My last Sram 9 speed cassette and matching Sram chain cost just less than £30 for both though as Martin said, spread over the mileage, cost per mile and cost per smiles isn't that much.:)

Dave.
Right now there's a thought - can I fit a 9 speed on here - like I said I only use about 5 of the gears anyway - lowest I need would be a 24T I think - so how about a 9 speed that goes 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 24. Or something close? Cant you custom order these things?

The thing that gets me is that the top gear is removable so that you can replace it, but try and get the gear on its own!
Right. That was my first thought. Just replace that one cog. Are you saying you can't do that? How come?

Yes I've just checked - I actually have the deraillier set so it won't go below the 24T cog (because with the larger chainwheel I don't want to chain to get too tight) - so that means I only ever use 6 gears - even up hills. So do just cassettes exist - from an 11T up to 24T?

Oh - and the other thought I had Martin - do they do a cassette that does up like one cog at a time - like an 11T, 12T, 13T etc - because I only ever use the top 5 gears - and that includes going up the hill to Wimbledon village with the dog on the front. Is that possible? Plus though we need to be aware you once told me that with the dongle and my 38T chainwheel (I think its 38) - you said there are certain cogs at the back I must not have if I dont want to mess with the dongle's function.

Thoughts once more?
Oops no the chainwheel I have on there right now is a 46T. So I think that means we can't use any cassette with a 23T cog on it. Yes?

I should stop posting to myself huh? But. What the heck. So there is one cassette that has these sizes: 11/32: 11-12-14-16-18-20-22-25-28-32 - which would be OK - it avoids the 23T which I cant use with my chainwheel and dongle (right Martin?) - and it has a 12T which might come in handy. I am making slow progress. If you leave me on my own with enough rope sooner or later I will hang myself. Thanks for your patience.

Don't see why not, maybe

various options on this.

You would probably need a 9 speed shifter as well so if you have combined brake and shifter it could get expensive.
Sorry Martin, not trying to undermine you, maybe you could give James better expert advice.

Dave.

Thanks Dave - and thinking about it I dont want to complicate things by changing the shifter etc - so I want to stick with the 10 speed - seems like I can do that so long as I go for that 11-32 cassette.

How hard is it to do this yourself? Change the cassette I mean - do all shimano cassettes use the same tools or does the 10-speed hyperglides require some other fancy tool?

Anybody know?

Sorry, just saw that one was listed as no longer available.

Here's another one on ebay.
.
That looks great - but there's no way I could use that on my bike could I - seeing as its a 10 speed at the moment - not without changing the gear changing mechanism. Right? Which I dont really want to get into..... but thanks anyway.

Understood. I tend to change the lot when changing a system, but am happy not to spend on the very high end, being satisfied with well adjusted lower end components.

Hi James,

£65 parts plus small labour charge, while you wait job. Plus a smile and a coffee.
You can go for a roadie 10speed cassette, which would work better with your long chain and extra large front sprocket. something like 11-25t etc.

You can't use 8,9 or 11 speed cassettes correctly with your mech / shifter set up. Best to stick with the 10 speed and do a proper job.

Needs to be booked in advance for while you wait fitting service.
Bring your little dog too?

Martin

And there was I all ready to do it myself.... which I still might because it looks very straightforward. But. With such a nice offer as that..... why not spend another £30 on rail fairs plus 'small labour charge' and drink coffee and look at Martin Smiling? Why not indeed.

So we could put a racing 11-25t on there right? We need to avoid a 23t though right - that won't go with my 46t chainwheel and the dongle..... yes?

Whats your new address? I will look at the logistics and let you know. It probably wont be till March now though - I am working flat out and out of the country for 3 weeks in Feb.

Here's a picture of the dog (in fully relaxed mode) to make you happy.

I'm all for that Flec - unfortunately I bought the thing off Martin - and - well - Martin doesn't seem to do anything 'lower end' - I think its all part of his plan to become very very rich.

Yes correct, I will do some digging around to find the best option.
