de-restricting Ezee bikes

Ok, so you've just de-restricted your Ezee bike and you've heatshrunk and cable tied all the gubbins back into postion - you are now running an illegal machine and if pulled over by the plod and if they get the bike checked out you are in the ****. Well, you guys may not be in the crapola but I would as I have just been disqualified for 4 years from driving - the plod up here have nothing better to do with their time than persecute (and prosecute) drink drivers or chase down lost cats - the word is already all over the place that pinkie has a new fangled all singing all dancing machine and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if plod came around for a look.......

Anyways, I'm thinking out of the box here and if I "were" to derestrict the Forza I certainly wouldn't go down Flecc's route which makes retrofitting time consuming and a case of turning the bike upside down, removing the heatshrink, redoing the connection and heatshrinking blah blah blah.........

Nope..... what you want here is something that can be "undone" at the flick of a switch. I have come up with an even better idea...... undoable at the turn of a key!

You can buy here

All you have to do is place the switch in series (in line) with the restrictor connection..... you can mount the key operated switch anywhere on the bike..... with the switch in the "on" position the bike will be running in restricted mode..... with the switch in the "off" position it will be derestricted ;)

Sooooo..... should plod ever take an interest in your wheels this will throw a spanner into the works and being a "key" operated switch the buggers can't prove you have the key or have ever used a key (if they're clever enough to know what the switch is for that is)

This way also has the advantage that you can either choose to save on juice (and get better range) with restriction or you can turn "off" and go fully derestricted if you feel like burning a stretch of rubber outside your local school to impress the children ;) Ooooooh! you also get to carry another set of keys, so will feel very important.

If I decide to keep the Forza I will perform this mod and upload detailed pictorial instructions.

EDIT: the snap on connectors are best lost whether you plan on keeping the bike restricted or derestricted.... electrically they are a weak link and much better out of a circuit than in one IMHO, I'm pretty much team hardwired and snap ons / latch ons should have no place in any good circuit.

Many of us have done this already, though I haven't bothered.

The method I illustrate is eZee's not mine, and is just there for those who ask how it's done, just to save typing it out every time as I found I was doing repeatedly in here.

Sorry man, just I haven't come across any "pictorial" derestrict with inline switch tutorials so thought I may upload one ;) Just working out the optimal mounting location (preferably discrete yet accessible) and checking the integrity of all the electrics.... this really could turn out to be very addictive.

No problem, it's always a good idea to repeat this info from time to time or it gets lost in past pages, and your's is a neat solution. Some have used a motorcycle switch on the handlebar or concealed under the saddle, easy to reach and flick off at a moments notice.

I can understand it could be difficult with the police in an area like yours. Here on the London fringe the police are so buried with work they haven't the time to bother with such trifles as e-bikes. Even a burglary often gets no response unless you do like one lady and say you've stabbed the burglar to death. She hadn't, but at least she got a quick response!

Blimey... 4 years ban? Was this a drink-driving ban? If so, you must have been very much over the limit or it was a repeat offence? Either way, I'd certainly fit any derestrict switch discreetly as local police forces do monitor vehicle use by banned drivers, particularly when the offence endangered other road users, pedestrians and cyclists. I would think it highly likely, especially in a rural area, that they would stop you to examine the bike for lights etc etc. A concealed switch would be absolutely vital, I would say. Nice little switch. I may get one for my car ignition circuit and hide it somewhere in the dashboard. Like it.

Pinkfloyd, I shall say just this: 4 years disqualification? 4 years jail would have been more appropriate.

I second that. Good thing that he is on an electric bike now. Just keep your fingers crossed PinkFloyd that some other drinker/driver doesn't take you out.

More appropriate in what respect? 28 years on the road, passed advanced driving test in 1994, never had an accident, maximum no claims bonus..... had a pretty bad experience with a woman and hit the bottle (no excuse) drove the car home on two occasions under the influence (both times at 3am in the morning on totally deserted country "back" road)....... you want me to spend 4 years in jail? What the hell would that achieve? You, as a "taxpayer", would want to pay to keep me in a jail for 4 years?

Cheers

Unfortunately the penalty for driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs is actually less than four years, but I would be quite happy to contribute my share of keeping Pinkfloyd and other criminals in jail for whatever the maximum is, if only to ensure that he, and they, did not collide with my bike on one of those country back roads (or run down a pedestrian making his or her way home from a late night dance, or a careful motorist driving his family home from the local ceilidh).

I would also be in favour of confiscating the vehicle, and imposing, not a four year, but a lifetime, disqualification - Pinkfloyd would still be able to travel about on his Forza provided it complies with the EAPC and EU regulations.

Well - now you put it like that - beheading would be a better alternative!! :) You plonker - consider yourself banned from women for four years as well! Oh - and finally - enjoy your ebike and ride the damn thing legally!!

And be a good boy in future like me. :D

Heh.... best thing that ever happened to me to be honest!!! The bike is getting me out and about, I'm saving £60 a week on petrol, don't have to worry about MOT, road tax, insurance, repairs...... Doesn't bother me at all being "banned" from driving, seriously, I now don't have to cart people about the countryside, have a great excuse if I don't want to go somewhere "I don't have a car"...... jesus...... I feel liberated!! Only two buses a week into town so bloody great!!!!

Can't I just be tarred and feathered and birched?
No- sorry - they aren't severe enough.

You are hereby condemned to ride your ebike once a week a full ten miles over a hilly course with the wind against you. The battery will be enticingly fully charged but you will not be allowed to switch the motor on. A special circuit will be installed so that, should you attempt to surreptitiously turn the key, you will receive a taser electric shock. Appeals for mercy or euthanasia will be considered after six months.

I would agree with the beheading/imprisonment thing if Pinkfloyd showed no remorse or thought he hadn't done anything wrong.... as it is, he has said he knows he shouldn't have done it and now he's paying the price. Thankfully, he didn't kill anyone and, one hopes, he won't do it again. Unfortunately, a friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver on "a deserted country road", so that mitigation doesn't really work for me.

I did read somewhere that one can be charged with an offence for riding a bike whilst under the influence..... so watch it Pinkfloyd! :)

Personally, I may as well have been banned from driving....since getting my bike, my car sits there for weeks on end, unused......

Sorry to hear about your friend, Jimmy. This is way off the subject now but - it would seem that some fatalities, especially among children, are an inevitable price to be paid if we are to have cars. Even given that everyone drives really carefully, sod's law will occasionally intervene.

I'm not condoning drink driving either but isn't it amazing how opinions have changed over the years? It wasn't too long ago that the police were known to take the occasional tipple and drive about quite merry, I remember being in the car with my dad back in the early seventies and him telling me to watch the road as he felt a bit woozy... no such thing as "seat belts" then either (or crash helmets as it goes) these days they'd tar an feather you for using a phone in a car, smoking a fag at the wheel.... whatever!

Accidents do happen and you don't have to be drunk to be involved in one> I just hope some of you holier than thou types don't run someone over cause if you do you will feel like ****. There but for the grace of god go I.... please remember that and drop your holier than thou attitudes, it could be you next.
