As far as I know (I don't have one so can't be sure) all phones that can access the web, have gps in them. Therefore they 'know' where they are and how fast they are travelling. Simply make it mandatory that they have a function that prohibits usage at anything over 10mph.
'Oh, but I use my phone on the train'! Tuff - read a book instead, you'll live a less pressured life.

Yesterday I was at Nant Yr Arian which is a red Kite feeding station near Aberystwyth. This spectacle happens every afternoon. There was a gathering of about 100 kites swooping down to grab scattered meat from the ground. It astounds me the inability of many people watching to be quiet in the face of such ariel majesty. Some were even on their 'phones as the event was happening.

After viewing many, many lights on ebay and AliExpress... I think this might be suitable as a highly visible rear bike light, because the listing appears to state the lens is optional - hex screws either side of the lens look promising in this regard. If not, the lens could be ground flat, which would also add diffusion. 18W would look damned bright, probably too darn bright and dazzling, even with a frame fashioned out of a large aluminium L plate with a rectagle or Batman symbol shape cut out of it, holding a diffuser in front. I very much doubt rozzers would be happy, but I'd feel safer cycling the roads at night... apart from of course worrying about rozzers.

The lens deffo needs to go!

In response to the stories of cyclists killed by drivers I looked up pedestrians killed by cyclists.
As bad as any death is, the vast majority of deaths were when the pedestrian stepped into the carriageway without looking, effectively they were responsible for their own demise. The cyclist then faced a slew of charges of which many don't make sense.
For example, the road is a 30mph limit, with all the traffic going back and forth doing 30+. The pedestrian steps out without looking properly, or with faced buried int heir phone, is then hit by a cyclist, doing less that the traffic around them and is charged with a wanton and furious cycling charge.

Facebook's app could do this if they wanted - it watches and records everything including texts and phone calls, as per the user agreement, as all apps could.

What if ebikes carried a device which made big periodic sparks of sufficient power to be audible as clicks on any device which has an amplifier and speakers switched on, even if heavily shielded? The sparks could occur faster as the vehicle gets closer? The Biker Sparko Safety-O-Matic?

My pet hate is the pedestrians who glance down the road for cars, dont see you as a cyclist, then walk diagonaly across the road with thier back to the traffic.

If one puts a rear light with a LED it should be red LED as a white LED will show pink through the red lens
I've just tested heat-resistant red acetate sheet with the front headlight I use - one layer turns it orange, and two layers make it appear red. The car rear light lens made it pink.

This light is preferable to use as a rear light over the others I have found so far, because it has high/low/bright & flashing modes, toggled by turning on and off. But it needs a good diffuser, perhaps this:

Can I suggests a comparison test ?

Take a picture at a distance, in twilight, of the lights you have been trying, lined up in a row, at the same height that they would be if on a bike and next to a car with its rear lights on.

And for a real comparison for us oldies, have one of the cycle lights an old grey plastic rear light, the type that were powered by two U2 batteries.
