Helmet only protects the top of the noggin, why don't they fit an airbag on bikes? Now, there's an idea :p
probably as the main part of you is in there, you can crash and lose an arm or leg and still live but a bit more difficult with a scrambled head....of course its only good enough for light knocks and the occasional golf ball landing on you but we like to be on bikes as feel free from burdons which include a roof, 4 doors and a boot,in our perfect place there would be a bike track to go everwhere and then this thread would stop as no one even me would wear a helmet..:D

however did you notice no gloves, he goes over what will first reaction be, not good advertiseing i dont think
Afraid not Keith. BMW researched this aspect well and the natural instinct was the opposite, to cringe into the shell, coiling up, a reaction that experienced motor cyclists know well.

You may not know that the rider wears a lap seatbelt in these C1 bikes, aiding that protective reaction. Every authority and motor cycling body has been convinced of the benefits after first being sceptical, and in all countries except Britain, a helmet doesn't have to be worn.

Here the DoT refuses to change the regulations, it goes against the grain in this "do-gooder" culture to actually allow people to do something.

sorry for the slow return (at work).
At the end of the day its your head and you can do with it what you want.
Do you want it fried, boiled or scrambled.

PS just bought myself a Giro Indicator helmet (for the use of.....).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
whats one of these ?...i tried in vain to get one of them with a rear view mirror but not possible in this country...oh..a giro indicator, does this point to all them claiming benifits ?

I think you are being a bit harsh on Mandy, she was just adding her opinion to this thread. This is the first time she has commented on this subject as far as I know.

You should all remember not everyone has been on the forum from the beginning, so what seems old hat to some might be new to others.:)
Thank you Martin

I didn't intend to offend anyone and I was just saying why I wear one and thought I would give my opinion on why as others have on why they wear one or do not as the case may be.
The thread was not closed so I posted :) I haven't been on line for a few days as had internet problems but now see their has been a few more :)

I have to disagree since this doesn't go back in time. The thread was only opened with it's first post 24 days ago, the subject flogged to death over 7 webpages and thankfully then laid to rest.

Until almost a month later Mandy raised it from the grave, the quote ironically starting with the opening words, "I don't want to recycle old arguments".

Unfortunately Mandy had an accident with the extracted quote so I've no idea which of the words belong in the quote and which were hers. Since the last part including wearing a helmets because of the lorries was definitely hers, I posted this harmless amused comment:

Mmmm. Lorry versus thin plastic cycle helmet?

Yes, that should teach the lorry a lesson.

And that's where the lecture started, despite what she says. As I keep saying, just wear the damned thing and stop going on about it.

Hi Flecc

I haven't been on line for a few days due to internet problems so I haven't posted or read the posts on the forum.

In reply to your post: My first posting included a post from John in page 2 of the thread on the 28th February.
I included his first two paragraphs and on deleting the last paragraph (as it didn't seem relevant at the time) the shaded area may have disappeared?

You are correct, my contribution was the last paragraphs in my original post on this thread. However there were several other posts subsequent to John's.
The most recent post at that time was on page 7, therefore "I don't want to recycle old arguments" was posted whilst the thread was still very active :D

Flecc wrote
And that's where the lecture started, despite what she says. As I keep saying, just wear the damned thing and stop going on about it.
.
Which lecture?

It certainly doesn't bother me if people wear them or not I just said why I wore one.

This one:

"Some protection is better than none and I challenge you to ride down my delightful road of which I have not got much choice"

Did you really think I've never ridden on a busy road? And do you think I and others can't make our own minds up about the helmet issue, without you trying to convince of the supposed benefits with such a silly example?

That's insulting, and then you wonder why I get offended.

Oh Flecc

That was said light heartedly as I truly hate that damn road as I quoted "delightful" in a light hearted way. There were also further posts inbetween and that one was in response to:

QUOTE Flecc -Yes Keith, now that's my language, primary safety, don't have the accident in the first place. That's where the thought and effort should be concentrated, not on fatalistic ideas that accidents are inevitable. They aren't UNQUOTE

I would expect everyone on here rides on busy roads and did not state anyone MUST wear one and certainly did not expect my post being misconstrued as insulting or offensive? I just feel safer on my "delightful" road with my helmet on so I think you may have taken it out of context.

Going back through the posts there were far more so called "lecturing" posts as you put it than mine, or for that matter "silly" examples :( So I am allowed too to be a little offended, am I not ;)

You obviously feel very strongly about not wearing one of which I have no problem with whatsover

I want to design my own helmet slimline, a bit like a rugby helmet, it would be like a beenie hat, but with neoprene or something like that for padding and some plastic shell segments on top to spread any impact...trouble is it would be illegal to manufacture one of them unless there was a new half-way standard introduced in helmets...at least it would be foldable, easy to transport, less dangerous for the neck

I remember listening to a radio program on the subject of cycle helmets a few years ago and hearing a quotation from hospital emergency staff which has stuck in my mind:

"What do you call a cyclist who doesn't wear a crash helmet? Answer - an organ donor"

I've always worn a cycle helmet ever since....

Maybe

This thread will eventually crash at 30mph+ head-first into a wall and die. The question will then be - if it was wearing a helmet would it have lived on :D :D

It did die once at 7 pages long, until someone went back several pages through the forum and raked it up again for five more pages of helmet trivia.

No.. I started this thread and soon realised it was a mistake.. Mandy picked it up again, I think without realising how much this debate had already been flogged to death..As Flecc said.. it's a sterile argument that goes nowhere.. some are for and some are against.. so what..

No problem Musicbooks, you weren't to know it had been in before or how this contentious subject always ends the same way.

Anyway, you have something much more interesting and important to think about at the moment. Let me know if you can't think what that is and I'll remind you. :D

Just because an argument may be sterile with entrenched views it does not cease to be important, interesting or warranted. If we all said whats the point in arguing the toss because we'll never agree the world would be muchn poorer for it and difficult issues would never be resolved.

I will refrain from expressing my view on this issue and the reasons why I do what I do regarding helmets for fear of being missinterpreted and or upseting those who want to see the thread die.
