not going to bother with the ram or cpu cos if it is locked id be fooked and risk damage taking out the logic board.

if i worked at foxcon id jump out the window as well :p

Apple's all aluminium iMac amd Macbook shells are supposed to act as heatsinks - my tiny Sony VAIO P does the same - doesn't even contain a fan, heat dissipates through the aluminium shell.

Apple should just fill them with oil.

Desktop CPUs from Intel and AMD use too much energy, ramping up my energy bills. I can't wait for the more energy efficient ARMs to become powerful enough to replace them.

DVD iz to bg :(

If you can get into the EFI/BIOS now and change the multiplier, you should be able to do it with a compatible CPU for that board.

They'll never con this fox!

i can get the cpu for 40 quid from cex problem is i cant change the fan profile so the cpu will just melt so might not last very long as run at 100c anyway

ill just stick a 500gb ssd in it and try get 130 quid out of it.

Yep, sounds like a good plan - people seem to find the idea of computers with SSDs more sttractive, even if they don't know what one is, or that they might not work for as long as a mechanical hard drive, or that their data may not be as recoverable when it suddenly fails. For me, SSD reliability and longevity isn't there yet for reasonable cost, but they will be within a few years I expect. Until then, I'll stick to Western Digital Blacks. I've got a few SSDs kicking around, I use them for temp files/Windows swap file, and not on important PCs I use to make a living with.

but thats no good for say a ps5 as the data rate needs to be 5500MB/s

macs with fusion drives use a m2 type ssd like 256gb and then use a bigger spinning drive to get the best of both, but if the ssd craps out you loose the lot.

they also put temp sensors in the 3.5 drives to stop you changing them but there is a work around.

Is that for a lot of small files or large ones? Or average mixed? Luckily I don't do any gaming.

Seagate ship a lot of those, just like losing everything on an SSD...

Mirrored RAID SSDs would be safer, but the cost of course is then doubled, after the quadruple of good mechanical hard drives...

it needs to be that fast or the drive wont work and some ps5 games are 150gb each so the ssd will cost as much or more than the ps5 as it only has a 700gb drive

"Enterprise" don't use them for long, just long enough and then they throw them away or sell them on, before they're calculated as becoming unreliable... usually a cycle of a year or three. For me, that's no long term reliable solution. I'll stick with WD Blacks, untils these are as about the same price:

My musician mate in Bali wants to give me audio production lessons in Ableton, because he's twiddling his thumbs waiting for his missus to pop a sprogg. I don't have time to take him up on his offer at the mo... plus I'd have to get Ableton.

Is there room for either or these? Depends on whether the board has the holes:

sata will die out soon as nvme drives have taken over tho you can get 8tb ones but there £1300

What in the cotton picking world does one need 8tb for? Streaming 8k pornography?

no you would have to cut a hole in the back of it as it is the slim version

A mate of mine cut a hole in his PC case for his AMD cooler, looks daft but runs cooler. Depends on your determination, but could lower resale value lol.

if a game is 150gb and you have 100 games you will need 15tb to store them all or you will have to delete games to free up space and redownload them.

all games are these days is the key to download them so 30mbps and a 150gb down load is going to take days

Data mining is the new oil, and real time data mining is where it's at, before it gets old - also some big sets of financial data are best processed fast (ignore the webinar)

https://www.theregister.com/2022/05/23/if_your_infrastructure_is_old/

Also, it's handy to never delete anything, and faster to back up onto big hards disk than a zillion DVD/BDROMs.

the heatsink covers the cpu and gfx plus there is no way to power it or control the fan curves.

it is just to old now and doubt the psu will last much longer as ten years old.

so 480gb ssd 3 quid for some tape and stick it on fb for 100 quid and get me a new robot ;)

Blasted Apple have hobbled any decent CPU upgrade with that custom cooler!

...and this is why I hate Apple.
