Charging electric cars

After reading a few forums it seems that many owners suffer range anxiety and dare not go anywhere near half the projected range offered by the car fearing they may not get back, so in effect the actual range is lowered even more. I have noticed a couple of charging bays at the local hospital which always have a car in them.. .. Rarely an electric car tho..

Same here where I walk the dog past an appartement building, unless someone has done an electric conversion on a rusty Peugeot 806...

It's really not necessary though. All that's needed is to go by the realistic range figures, ignoring the theoretically possible, then go on journeys that leave around 15 miles spare over the round trip.

The makers are well aware of this fear and take care of it. The cars all have nearest chargers finding software and guide you to them. In addition the makers include free rescue if you run out for at least the first year and sometimes three years to allow one to get used to the car and what it can do. The rescue is picking up and taking you and your car to your home.

So really nothing to worry about, especially with this new generation of larger battery cars.

I read somewhere abut a new approach.. Dont really do in depth intergoogling so cant find it now, but they were trying an electric hub similar to out hub bike wheels, but for cars which I thought was interesting.. although I am sure there are many reasons (and graphs) to show why it cant be done

mmm, not convinced.. I have noticed on both my bikes that the last 25% disappears much faster that the other three.. especially important if due to bad timing the grid had borrowed some as well.

Easy. Stick it in bottom or second gear and plug the starter. Cheapest e-car on the road.

I can remember a time or two in days long gone driving my car on the starter when it had conked out! On one occasion my mini broke down when half way across a main line railway crossing... Starter wouldn't get it moving so wife had to get out and push.. lol

My '55 beetle broke the clutch cable, I drove it for weeks without one starting at green lights on the starter. In downtown Wellington. In traffic... No one ever noticed!

mmm, not convinced.. I have noticed on both my bikes that the last 25% disappears much faster that the other three.. especially important if due to bad timing the grid had borrowed some as well.

There's a huge difference between the high current draw of an e-bike from a little battery and a moderate draw at medium car speeds from a very large battery. There are tens of thousands of users commuting in e-cars who enjoy consistently journeys, one of them is a member here who runs a Zoe on a surprisingly long commute. The e-car battery level gauges are pretty accurate on all accounts, infinitely better than the crude things we have.

As for the grid, don't connect to it. It may never happen and will always be optional.

This all goes back to how we learned to drive using the tech of the day. My first car was a ford Pop with the side valve engine and 3 speed box.. so can you imagine one of todays snowflakes trying to drive one? Rolling up to a roundabout, declutch and go straight into first gear? Crunch Crunch.
