jimmy would use better cells and end up with a pack with more than 8.8ah to around 13ah pack and be better than a replacement from Halfords.

it could be a more complex job and why he is charging more but he wont touch bosch batts because of problems with them.

cells are also in short supply everywhere atm which also pushes the price up.

No use buying from Fogstar unless one can spot weld cells and solder BMS and associated wiring in place. A decent arduino based spot welder and a high rate lipo battery for power, a lipo balance charger is going to be circa £225.

He did say that the halfords batteries come with a proprietery BMS so it may not be repairable.

I'm now thinking of replacing the rear wheel and controller and battery with some kind of conversion kit. But how do I know if my rear wheel is cassette or free wheel?

With the Halfords battery if one wants to use it on another bike kit one simply replaces the BMS with a generic one for about £18 if the cells are still good. A few solder joints are needed.

So I have tried this and I only got readings from 4 connectors 12v each time.
Hmm doesn't sound right.
What voltage do you get when probing the first White and the Red ?

I just enlarged the battery pic and another multi coloured sense connector has showed up on the LHS (I didn't notice it originally) and it is reminiscent of the one I had on my Oxydrive battery where the sense wires all vary in colour .

Try the same voltage procedure on this connection again starting at the Black and moving along one at a time.

Either way mate re-celling the battery isn't worth it especially if its going to cost approx £400. I need to work out replacement options now. Any tips? Mid drive or Rear hub? I'm not even sure if a mid drive would fit on the carrera espec bike.

How old is the battery ?
As yet it hasn't been confirmed if the battery is toast or whether the issue is the charge or even the BMS.

The battery is from April 2019. I think we have determined that its not the charger as we measured the voltage on the battery whilst it was plugged into the mains right and it was rising to 41v then dropping, implying that a cell or number of cells are below the voltage requirement to sustain a charge. Or did I get it wrong.

IMHO you got it right. The charger is correctly and continually attempting to start the battery but not succeeding, so we know the charger is working. You're getting nothing on the SOC reading, but we know the BMS LED's are working because the SOH also works correctly from the pattern of LEDs that do light.

The SOH shows the battery cells are already half life expired; IIRC Halfords rate the battery for 2 years/500 cycles >60%. Even if you're prepared to open the battery and "bump" any low cell strings (which is the direction Neal is taking), you haven't got a great deal of life left in the cells anyway. The indications seem to be that at least some cells have probably sunk way too low for recovery, but trying that may still be worth a shot.

On the other hand, your half-life cells may be okay or recoverable and it may just be a faulty BMS, but with the BMS being specific/unique to Halfords/Suntour with comms everywhere means you're still screwed in terms of being able to replace that with a generic one.

IMHO I'd say you're flogging a dead horse. For peace of mind, I might be inclined to take both charger and battery into Halfords and ask them to double check by substitution, but beyond that I'd be looking for a new battery or an alternative too.

Just my two cents.

It would be good to see what others have done in the community with there halford bikes, wether they have simply replaced batteries or put on new kits etc.

Done some digging souds like my best options are to :

1. Buy a new controller 350w (one with a compatible LCD and a standard PAS).
2. Buy a new battery 36v.

And then do some wiring to continue using the existing motor. My only query would be where to buy those components from I do prefer UK stock or EU stock. And will any controller suffice? Or does it have to have specific wiring.

It’s gone 2 years got the bike in May 2019.

tbh i dont see you getting a 36v pack pre built with decent cells less than 350-400 quid.

i know there are packs on ebay for 165-200 quid but id not touch any of those as will be using fake 18650 cells thus why they are cheap in the first place as lie about the cells capacity.
