Because of my recent ebike soldering disaster, I couldn't restrain myself from going out for a jog... ebike is still dead, a work in progress... My home is on a hillside, so I started very slowly heading upwards and within about 20 feet, I became aware of an ache - I could feel a dull aching pain some small region of tightness in my chest. So I stopped. I couldn't feel it when I stopped, only when my body was shaking ie slow jogging. I decided to continue, but kept it very slow. Within 100 yards, I had worked up a bit of a sweat, and experienced a pleasant ringing in the ears - my body loves exercise, and it felt good! After another 40 minutes of slow jogging, I decided I was happy to continue for as far as I could go, because I do believe ebiking - even with my extremely lazy maxed out settings - has strengthened my legs! My thighs were the problem when jogging - hills are all over the place where I live. I haven't actually been out jogging since last November, and the difference is marked! My entire slow jogging session lasted approx 1 hour 20 minutes and I covered 3.54 miles - now that's what I call slow jogging! A good tip is to slow down periodically. Also take a deep breath and sigh, to relax while jogging slowly, every so often (easy to feel stressed). On hills, I kept my steps about 6 to 10 inches wide... my breathing got heavy on hills but I managed. I even managed slow jog the b*stard wall of a hill which leads to my home. There's more nerve activation of muscles with activities like jogging and dancing, which you don't get ebiking - you use more muscles in total while jogging, therefore the watts used are more distributed than when ebiking, which mostly works the legs. If I don't get a heart attack today, I'll go out again in two days time. It's gotta help my thyroid function, ahead of my appointment with the endocriminologist next week. Hope they now have blood test tubes... I've got arthritis in both big toes, my right hip and right shoulder, and not walking or jogging for a year have made all that worse. Movement stops joints seizing up - and ebiking doesn't move those parts nearly as much, in my year long experience. My knees are killing me now and I'm sweating like a pig. Thighs are killing me too, especially the left one.

One great benefit of slow jogging, which I noticed a few weeks after slow jogging twice a week, was added spriteliness and balance. My energy levels were really good back then too, compared to now. Maybe I'll do it again tomorrow...

This guy is slow jogging three times too fast IMHO:

I would have been born with wheels

I packed in jogging about 15 years ago, found the repetitive thump thump aggregated my bad knee whereas cycling, with lower impact but still lots of movement actually promoted its lubrication. (physio explained theory)
Yes, my physio said the same thing about 10 years ago - I haven't noticed any difference yet. With slow jogging, you predominantly use your calf muscles to propel you forward, in fact it's all about the calves; very little height is achieved, slow jogging is very low impact... at least that's the theory. Also take very tiny steps (like a Japanese Geisha hurrying with a bowlful of tea), so that your feet mostly fall flat on the ground, and with very little force (low impact). Slow jogging very much goes against the grain, if you're accustomed to bounding along like Pepe le Pew. It's more like balancing on one leg, slowly tipping over while pushing forward with the calf on that leg, to fall on the other leg to balance on that leg etc. etc. I couldn't last more than a few seconds of proper jogging... You know you're slow jogging right, when you're drifting along silently like a Ninja ghost.

I've had some serious withdrawal symptoms not ebiking. It's quite bizarre not feeling like superman.

My kneecaps move out of place after a slow jog, or after climbing stairs or in fact doing anything - so I do this to put them things back into place: Stand, bring legs together, bend legs and touch knees with hands, rotate the locked legs horizontally in a circle clockwise and anticlockwise, alternately a few times. Usually one direction will fix it more than the other, after a few rotations. Well, it works for me.

It’s interesting what you say about slowing down periodically. Now I’m getting older, I find the first part of the run the hardest. At one time I could go straight out the front door and settle into sub 8 min miles immediately. Then, when I got into my fifties, I found I needed to run for about half a mile at about 9:00 min / mile, stop and let my pulse recover to 70 - 80 BPM and then I could set of again, up the pace and comfortably maintain it for 10 miles or so. Now I’m in my late 50s, that initial half mile needs to be around 2 miles. After the heart rate recovery period, I can maintain a decent sub 8 min / mile pace.

Earlier in the year I followed a training programme called,”If you want to run faster, slow down.” It’s basically forcing yourself to run slowly for longer. I would run 10 - 12 minute mile pace for 90 minutes three to four times per week for six weeks. It felt very strange and I felt like I was losing fitness. At the end of the period, I set 5K and 10 K personal bests. It’s something to do with improving aerobic capacity as apposed to anaerobic, which running slowly does. Running quickly keeps you in the anaerobic zone, for which there is very little scope to improve.

There is some medical support for the theory that running improves knee condition, not damages it. So far no problems for me.

Main thing I find is to remain below ones aerobic threshold (ie run slow enough to be able to maintain normal conversation). Paradoxically running (and more to the point push ups half through run) healed some rheumatism that was developing in my left shoulder. I think developing (core) muscle may take weight of joints (and runners metabolize more calcium/have higher bone mass)

We don’tneed any extra headline grabbing laws & rules. Everything is covered under existing legislation. The problem is evidence. It’s very difficult to gather evidence of offences involving a sexual element.

The danger lurking is that the standard of proof or quality of evidence is reduced in order to bump up the conviction rate. That’s the easy option and doing easy is very much in fashion at the moment.

It’s all falling apart. It has been for years. Policing standards are a shambles and it leads back to incompetent weak police managers all the way up the chain to government itself.

Hm!
Furious denial is usually the first sign of a u turn with this government (a bit like denial with addiction) "there isnt a fuel shortage", " we will not deploy the military" etc etc. I would not be surprised if kwarteng agree to prematurely lift price cap having insisted he would not (energy companies say in the sun of all places they may simply have to stop providing unprofitable gas if he does not)
