Dear oh dear, how many times?

They are not protecting the NHS and public by helping the public to put themselves at severe risk by paying them not to work, but socialise and go to the beach instead.

The government has just been reported on the news as making exactly my point, that only the public have the answer. I just hope that this time they strongly spell that out, rather than taking heavy handed control again, so giving the public the chance to blame them when it all goes wrong.
.
so do you think that BJ won't do a u-turn when schools reopen in September?
I reckon he'll have to even before September.
Hospital admissions grow by 55% a week at the moment.
At this rate, some hospitals will refuse covid patients in about 6 weeks.

He may well, but it will be a mistake since it just puts us back into the same loop going nowhere. Sooner or later we will have to live with Covid taking our own precautions. We both have been living in Covid hotspots but have both avoided it, showing how effective that can be.

The government just needs to spell out the message very bluntly to the public:

"Only you can control it. You know what to do, ALL of you. Accept the vaccines, mask indoors in public places and public transport, practice social distancing and hand hygiene".

"If you don't do those well enough and get Covid, it will be your fault."

And then shut up, other than repeating the above, verbally and written.

In your second and last sentences you are arguing against yourself. That people cannot be trusted to protect themselves, but you all do. :D

As I've pointed out, at first people won't do as advised, but as they see the consequences of what they know is their own actions, they'll soon change. We are going to get more deaths anyway, so as I've said, put them to good use in showing the public that only they have the answer at present.

The problem with the government rigidly enforcing protection is that the people can and do blame them when it all goes wrong, even when it's themselves to blame as it mostly is.
.
The biggest and most deadly problem is a total lack of leadership. Boris Johnson is effectively holding the pub door open whilst simultaneously saying to people, I wouldn’t go in there, it’s dangerous. People don’t really know what to do. Boris Johnson says, wear a mask in confined spaces, and then less than 24 hours later he’s seen in a car containing 4 people and he’s the only one not wearing a mask.

What we need is very clear guidance, best practice set out. That needs to be reinforced with impeccable behaviour by those issuing the guidance. We aren’t getting either. It’s all garbled & confused messaging set against a backdrop of a most vile display of double standards.

Laws are useless, clear guidance and leadership from the front works best.

Well, I'm living (Currently) proof that double Jabbed isn't the golden bullet.
Sorry to hear this John, I too hope you don't end up with long covid. I can't remember where I saw it but I think there is some evidence to show that if you have been double vaccinated but then you go on to get the virus you are less likely to end up with long covid.

I suspect over the next couple of months many of us who have been double vaccinated are going to end up with Covid, as I wrote yesterday the stats now seem to show, vaccination only provides about 50% protection from catching the virus.

Your cold like symptoms seem to be what many people are now experiencing when it comes to getting the delta variant. I don't know if our list of symptoms has changed but if not they certainly need to change to reflect what people who are getting this latest variant are now saying they are having.

There was an expert on the radio yesterday talking about wearing masks, he said the following. Mask although not a silver bullet do help to reduce the spread of the virus, however they only work if everyone wears them. So for example he said if on public transport once the rules change for compulsory to advisory then if as few as 10 or 20% of people stop wearing mask, then the protection masks offered to everyone has now gone.

Is that strictly correct? Maybe it’s true for those cloth masks made from disused underpants, but I thought FFP3 masks were supposed to provide close to 100% protection for the wearer. Now they are available, I use FFP3 masks when I have no alternative but to go indoors and mix with strangers. Screwfix are well stocked with FFP3 rated masks at about £4.50 a pop. Better than when spivs were selling them at £25+ each, but still more expensive than they need to be.

Thanks for the concern all,
Still no idea how I caught this damn thing. I really am a boring old fart who doesn't generally do pubs, meals out and such. (Nothing more sad than "Billy No mates" sitting in a restaurant at a table in the corner in their own). ;)

I'm out a lot on my bike but that's usually a solo activity. I think the favourite is probably shopping with a less than suitable mask. My fault I guess, an FFP3 version is on my shopping list before I'll do that again regardless of what the guidelines say.

Symptoms....
It seems after the regulatory call from "Test and Trace" there are a lot I was unaware of, I must be behind the times. After going through the ones I was aware of... Persistent Cough, Sore Throat, Food tastes like crap, Headache, High Temperature. (All answered No). We got onto Sneezing (Yes), Feel like I've just gone 10 Rounds with <Insert HW Boxer name here> (Yes), Itchy Eyes (Yes), Diarrhea (Fortunately No). It all felt like Hayfever to me, but apparently not.

Oh well, I've always been a bit of a "Doomsday Preper" so plenty of tinned stuff, Longlife milk, Bog Rolls, Freezer stuff., 3 litres of whisky and plenty of beer at my disposal, I should be able to make it last 10 days. :D

On the basis that masks protect others, rather than oneself, according to the experts, it will probably be the failings of an infected person's mask that caused your infection John.

I hope your more unpleasant symptoms pass soon.

we need to invest in treatments.
In view of the huge sums spent in the last 18 months, I'd say £100 billions for an effective treatment is a bargain.

We’ve done the New Zealand thing. There’s a bloke called Derek and a sheep living there. It’s much easier to control.

Put the New Zealand government in charge over here and they’d do better than Johnson, but there would be more deaths than they had in New Zealand. It has a lot to do with population density and population stupidity. We do very well on the last point.
By any measure doing as NZ did would put a huge dent in the 150,000 dead total.
This Derek and his sheep is just BS !look at the figures for Japan

"In Japan, from 3 January 2020 to 5:41pm CEST, 2 July 2021, there have been 801,721 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 14,802 deaths

The current population of Japan is 126,108,312 as of Monday, June 14, 2021,

More than double our own.

This Government doesn't have the credibility to advise the public with it's dreadful record of repeated stupidity, added to the level of stupidity that was triggered by Brexit fever, it has no chance of working

Here is an example

It makes you wonder how New Zealand manages to do rather better then eh?
Sorry this is all BS
The simple fact is we are risking what potentially could evolve into an extinction event out of crass stupidity permitting enough cases to evolve Covid into a deadly virus as bad as Ebola.
Money is such a problem? REALLY? how then do other nations cope?
Flecc and OG ... Can I be referee?. Both statements are true, Health services have to ration resources, But the UK has been spectacularly poor at managing the resources in respect of Covid. .. Money is only one of those resources , Goodwill, Buyin, Credibility , Authenticity are equally important other resources and the UK has continued to squander these. And even today is continuing to do the same.
The UK was UNIQUE in Western Europe , it could have imposed quarantine, it could have nipped this on the bud multiple times , but every time it has chosen the wrong option.

But the spirit of Brexit lives on

Oh. That makes perfect sense. I’ve never won the lottery while we were in the EU but now we’re out of the EU I can expect a win tonight. Fab.

Great fun
Why didn't they win anything 1967 through 1972?

that's short sighted.
The danger in BJ's strategy is the virus will evolve 10 times more rapidly among those who have been vaccinated to one or more vaccine resistant strains.
The new strain will threaten the whole world.
What then?

I despair when Boris Johnson subcontracts our safety to the great British public.

This morning in The Daily Mail, the first thing I saw was a photograph constructed by three members of the same public who are now partially responsible for my safety. One had pushed a firework up his arse. The second had lit the firework and was holding a smiling emoji close to the flames and smoke which was billowing from the first man’s arse hole. A third had photographed the event, probably using a mobile phone, likely on a contract they couldn’t afford. By asking these people to act responsibly and removing guidance and leadership from government responsibility, Boris Johnson has placed our safety into their hands.

Do New Zealanders put fireworks up their bottoms, or is this the preserve of the British? It could explain the disparity in Covid deaths.

I agree, I wasn't praising his strategy. I just wanted far more emphasis on the public behaviour being the answer and not their depending on government. Because governments have no answer until we get a vaccine that actually works well enough.

As I inferred long ago, the present ones are little better than useless in terms of prevention and have no chance of eliminating Covid.

It's all very well you objecting to living with Covid, but that is all we have so there's no alternative at present, other than the public stopping it spreading more effectively.
