I watched Zahawi on the Marr prog this morning, there was a definite difference in tone from him than what we saw the other day from Jenrik when he said he couldn't wait to get rid of his mask. Zahawi said mask wearing in busy public places would be expected. More details here.
Nadhim Zahawi says mask wearing will be ‘expected’ after 19 July | Coronavirus | The Guardian

David Spiegelhalter was on the same show and he said he though it was quite likely we would be seeing 2.5k covid hospital admissions a day shortly.

As JHC posted recently this all has a very familiar ring to it, the same things were happening before lockdown 1 and lockdown 2.
It's perplexing. Either we've misjudged boris and he's genuinely like his public persona the kind of 24 karat buffoon that has to repeatedly urinate on the same 600v relay. Or zahawi's OBVIOUS signal of the start of a massive u turn is part of an elaborate tory strategy that defy comprehension.

It’s today that business magnate Sir Richard Beard straps himself to one of his fireworks and goes into space*

*It’s not really space because it isn’t high enough.
At every turn, we are seeing encouragement to reduce our impact on the planet - yet he is using more resources for a joyride than all the contributors to this thread put together have, or will, in our entire lifetimes.

And for some reason we seem to be expected to be interested and to cheer.

(This is just a guess. But I would be surprised if it were not true.)

Sir Beard’s environmental impact doesn’t matter because he’s very rich. It’s the job of the very rich to tell the little people, like you & I, how we should live our lives for the benefit of the planet.

I recall reading the History of Byzantine politics.
This lot would make them blush

Indeed, it's just sub orbital flight. One chump on radio even said he will become an astronaut with this flight.

Getting a few things straight, there are no astronauts since that term refers to stars and no-one has flown to a star. Nor Cosmonauts since that infers travel across the universe.

In reality no human has ever gone into space. The moon isn't in space, it's in Earths back garden, irretrievably tied to Earth so part of it. Even a trip to Mars isn't space travel since it's still within the solar system, all planets tied as one entity. Space lies beyond solar systems.

Our only presence there is the Voyager 2 spacecraft which left the solar system on 5th November 2018.

Technically, you may be right, but I think anyone who has left Earth orbit and travelled to the Moon is a spaceman / astronaut :)

I don’t count those beige chino wearing guys with enormous moustaches aboard the space station as astronauts.

A tweet that made me smile

The footage of a nude man waving an England flag while attempting to windmill his chipolata dick in the car park outside the PC World in Wembley is a better metaphor for Britain’s attitude to the world under Boris Johnson than any satirist could devise.

The definition of space is 100km altitude. ..by the international agreements , however NASA ,uses 80 km as their operational definition. So todays flight hits the USA definition of Astronaut. The ISS is certainly Space.

Those boundaries are just arbitrary lines in the sky decided upon for political purposes.

Sorry flecc, you cannot disagree ..you can dislike, but these are facts . You can have your own opinions but not your own facts. They take that figure because the atmosphere is basically gone ..it is below 10-5 that of sea level.

An astronaut travels through space. Sir Beard has only dipped his toe in the far reaches of the upper atmosphere. He hasn’t actually traveled anywhere. The lines which you define are human set goals for the award of trinkets.

I wouldn’t class those who have orbited the Earth as astronauts in the true sense. They haven’t been anywhere. The closest we have to a real astronaut are those who have travelled to the moon.
