Hospitals in the Brazilian Amazon are once again collapsing under the strain of treating covid-19 patients. In Manaus, the capital of Amazonas, people are queuing to buy oxygen tanks from private suppliers to attempt to treat family or friends at home, with oxygen supplies in hospitals exhausted. It is the second time that Manaus has been in crisis since the pandemic began. It is estimated that 76 per cent of people in Manaus contracted covid-19 between March and October 2020. Some members of the local community claimed the population had reached herd immunity, but the second wave of cases being seen now has disproved that theory, and raised questions about whether herd immunity is even possible.

May be it's just an overshoot.
The situation should improve in a week or two.
Still, if the virus mutates to an more and more infectious, it would overcome our ability to vaccinate. A terrifying prospect.

It's all a remainer plot.. or something... the truth is out there...Priti Patel and Dianne Abbott did the math between them
Not that the truth really matters anymore in these septic isles.

It's all magic powered by Merlin.

As ever, the wrong aeroplane. The vaccine should have been named after the Hurricane. No-one wants a hurricane. Whereas we love dwelling on weather forecasts from many years ago.

Situation in Brazil is looking dreadful. All of Europe is very worrying too. France, Italy and Netherlands talking of extra restrictions which has caused rioting in latter.
Why oh why are we know seeing shortage of vaccines. Production could have been sorted months ago. They have waited until its needed to step production up. Crazy.
They are all as bad as each other.

Last week Spain had 31k new infections per day. This week they have had 36k per day. And no lockdown.

they have to take a calculated risk, in case the virus mutates to a more resistant form, which seems to be borne out at the moment by the Brazilian variant.
The problem is how fast we can vaccinate.
There will always be a percentage x% of those vaccinated still getting covid bad. In them, the virus will have mutated into a resistant variant which makes them very ill in the first place. If the number of new cases is very low, the new variant won't spread but if we still have a big reservoir of susceptible candidates, like now, the new variant is going to spread and cost us billions and billions.
The solution is to produce booster shots very quickly to keep new variants local.

UK.
The EU may NOT approve AZ vaccine for the elderly.
QUOTE:
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - AstraZeneca denied on Monday its COVID-19 vaccine is not very effective for people over 65, after German media reports said officials fear the vaccine may not be approved in the European Union for use in the elderly.

A spokesman for AstraZeneca, said:

“Reports that the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine efficacy is as low as 8% in adults over 65 years are completely incorrect. In the UK, the JCVI supported use in this population and MHRA included this group without dose adjustment in the authorisation for emergency supply. In November, we published data in The Lancet demonstrating that older adults showed strong immune responses to the vaccine, with 100% of older adults generating spike-specific antibodies after the second dose.’”
You can relax, it’s BS and this German originated myth has been debunked. Why the German’s would want to spread such information is baffling.

They are in the shite with vaccine supply, so publishing this garbage isn’t going to assist them.

The worrying thing about Brazil is the rate of infection in areas that were hit badly during the first wave. One area had an estimated 70% of the population showing anti-bodies, but the new strain is rampant with spiralling rates of infection.

It's easy to understand why they would, both sides are still fighting the war.

They send us Volkswagens that eat loads more fuel then they should and Audis with steering faults to kill us, we retaliate by developing a vaccine that kills older Germans.

According to Worldometer UK's number of infected was circa 22k today. Lowest its been for a long time. Noticed before that when numbers drop very little is made of it on news. Wondering if its policy to keep people following restrictions??
Didn't see News on all sides but certainly never mentioned on side I watched..???
Last Monday was 37k..
New cases has been dropping for a couple of weeks.

Deaths trail by about that amount. It looks (very weak evidence) as if they may just be peaking; let's hope.

Even so, certainly not a good time to start removing any restrictions. At least if new variants don't do something horrid we may not need extra restrictions.

maybe it's fake news, maybe not.
As I have already made the remark that because AZ uses an adenovirus as a vector, it could well be that our immune system reacts to it and reduces its efficacy.
That may explain why AZ recommends a longer time lapse between the two jabs, 4 to 12 weeks, the AZ vaccine takes longer to build immune response, and why the quote from the AZ guy on the same article insists on AFTER two doses: 'we published data in The Lancet demonstrating that older adults showed strong immune responses to the vaccine, with 100% of older adults generating spike-specific antibodies after the second dose.'

And their wartime allies are at it too.

Takata who make airbags for the Japanese motor industry put so much explosive charge in 67 million steering wheel airbags that drivers were being shot in the chest when the airbags went off, causing serious injuries and sometimes deaths.

Tens of millions of Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi cars had to be urgently recalled in the west.

We've still got to get our own back for that.

Just as well we in the UK can make all the cars we need - and all the parts required. And do so without any fuel consumption or other issues or safety recalls. And then export our surplus to the rest of the world.

World beating.

Party Boy Johnson will be throwing a big get together within 6 weeks, he can’t help himself.

His position isn’t helped by his back-bench psychopaths arguing for more public mixing.

Someone I know has just been admitted to hospital with yet-to-be-diagnosed issues including some mentioned. I don't think there is a Covid-19 aspect but it has made me particularly alert to seeing articles about brain-related issues.

Given how bad psychiatric support is in the UK (and probably many other countries) - it is concerning.

Covid linked to risk of mental illness and brain disorder, study suggests
One in eight people who get coronavirus also have first psychiatric or neurological illness within six months, research finds

I think as well as Covid-19, we are suffering from a pandemic of excess researchers and other boffins trying to make a name for themslves on the back of Covid.

Anything to avoid getting a proper job.

That is always the case. There is a well known bandwagon effect, which I remember back in the day .. remember Cold Fusion?. Remember Tachyon emission?. But in fairness these Scientific re-evaluations are all part of the truth and reconciliation process.

Anyone who has followed the saga of my vaccine situation will be interested to learn the final irony.

While I was out this afternoon for my weekly shop, the vaccine centre phoned. I phoned straight back on getting in, but it was too late.

Apparently they'd allocated a last few doses that were available at the centre to my surgery's outstanding list but they'd finished booking them by phone since I was out. They confirmed that it's likely to be a wait now until there's more supplies, so if they are sticking with the Pfizer since we've only been a Pfizer area for the first jabs, that will be April for me.

If that's the case, so much for Boris Johnsons promise that all the top priority group including we over 80s will have had the first jab by the end of February.
