Lots and lots of thoughts. A couple:

The global death toll has reached 108,867, according to the Johns Hopkins university tracker. More than 1.77m people have been diagnosed.

Which is 6.15%. Let us hope that the diagnosis rate is missing millions who only suffer mildly.

IVF clinics are closing (or have closed). And I suspect quite a few who believe they have an option to wait will choose not to become pregnant until things improve. So what impact on birth rates? Will we see a year with few planned births, fewer/same/more unplanned births, followed by catching up over the next year or so? You can imagine planning for nurseries, schools, health care, etc., which has to cope with dramatic swings.

I’m listening to a caller on LBC. She’s a nurse with 30 years experience and is saying that if they get sick with Coronavirus and can’t work, their pay is being reduced to £98 / week.

It sounds like there is a festering feeling of hatred towards this government from the health care profession. I can’t say I blame them.

At the end:

Philosopher and author AC Grayling tweeted: “Trump doesn’t know that antibiotics target bacteria not viruses. Covid-19 is a virus. Trump is an idiot. He is a dangerous idiot.”

Yesterday, I read that he still has 45% support. Ah! Specifically (and utterly bewilderingly) for his coronavirus response. Here:

A Reuters/Ipsos poll this week found approval of Trump’s handling of Covid-19 had dipped to 42%, down from 48% the week before. Trump’s overall approval rating was at 40%, close to where it has been for much of his presidency. According to a survey by CNN, 45% of Americans approve of Trump’s coronavirus response.
Clearly the idiocy Pandemic in America, as here is nowhere near it's peak yet

Is she employed by the NHS or a contractor?

From what I can see, NHS employees get sick pay (with limits, of course).

Did you notice the vehement putdown of the Virgin orbit ventilator in that video I posted of how (not) to design and make a ventilator? Specifically selected for the most dismissive words - while praising garden shed people.
Yes.. The big difference being that the garden shed people know no better, whereas the Virgins and the Dysons are staffed with real engineers and Ought to know the difference. There is plain ignorance and culpable ignorance .

I got the impression she was an NHS employee. She was a nurse, husband and two daughters doctors. She sounded absolutely terrified about going in to work.

The RCN have now advised their staff not to treat patients if they have insufficient PPE. I must say that I can’t find any argument against that advice. The RCN have promised legal support for anyone refusing to treat patients, if necessary.

What a shameful state of affairs and all of it entirely avoidable. This government had two months head start on Italy and squandered it. That is criminal negligence, they should be put on trial.

It’s not only PPE, the U.K. has the worst Coronavirus testing record in the Western World.

I shall look forward to the BBC making the government answer for this later this evening.

The truth is there is no shortage of PPE in this country, as Matt Hancock regularly proves, if the term means Politically Pathetic Excuses

Indeed but it also pointed out how much more complex the design has to be if it is be effective

Here's my ventilator design to treat multiple patients at once. One patient into each seat with a pair of dental wedges to keep their mouths wide open:

Sorry flecc I have considered the design and realised there is room for improvement .
Government supporters will also require tight fitting earplugs to prevent a serious loss of beneficial airflow during the ride.

Don't be like that. It's better than my last design which was a G-Tech leaf blower with a mouthpiece on the end.
.
Oh come on now..this is the ebikes forum... The older non peddling 200 watt ebikes with a megaphone cone clamped to the mouth. The 15 mile per hour breeze will clear the cobwebs out of any aveioli foolish enough to stay closed

I’ve just read a bizarre story about drugs essential to the critical care of patients run low. These are opioid pain killers and anaesthetic drugs. It’s said that in order to preserve supplies, the drugs would only be used on patients who need them.

This raises the question, what have they been using the drugs for previously? Have they been dressing up in all that excess PPE and having drug fuelled raves in the hospitals? I can’t work it out. I’m not clever enough.

Just a layman's question and based on an assumption that such machines could be made available, wouldn't another and less invasive treatment be
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and simply use an Oxygen mask?
