What chance this actually happening? At least in the way the headline appears to say. (Sorry about DM link - I am sure there will be others.)

Of course, it is amazing the government seems able to do anything at all given its current attitude, approach and lack of majority. Can't see this as anything other than an election claim.

Developers could be banned from putting gas boilers in new homes in one of several new green initiatives to be announced by Government

This was first anounced a little while ago, I'm sure before BJs election to PM, so I'm sure it's genuine.

I particularly remember it due to reflecting that I'd been almost 50 years ahead on this issue by ripping out gas and having the meter removed back in 1970 as part of green measures in my home. I've been all electric ever since then.

Seems like a torrent of activity (like the rain...). Pretty bad when it is your sister.

Calls for inquiry into claims Johnson backers benefit from no-deal Brexit
Cabinet secretary urged to look into conflict of interest fears raised by Philip Hammond and Rachel Johnson
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/sep/28/boris-johnson-backers-benefit-from-no-deal-brexit-inquiry
Of course ,I know nothing of this matter, but it does seem that it is the type of thing which should be brought up as a question under privilege in the HoC. Mr Hammond etc, either names names, perhaps under privilege ,or should not comment.

I think it is genuine at one level. Possibly even a good thing if done properly.

But pushing it out ahead of all previous plans, and without being properly managed, smacks of bad government. And typical of scrabbling around for ways of being seen to address one of the issues du jour, regardless how effective or sensible, or even possible.

An all-too-near development which is on the cards would see a cost increase of towards a million pounds. Doubt that is enough to see off the whole development (which is what I would like), but could well make Persimmon re-evaluate and see where they can recoup that money. (Especially as they have already found themselves having to promise higher standards such as actually building in fire breaks that will work and, being Wales, domestic sprinkers.)

The company I worked for sold off it's entire boiler manufacturing worldwide after our research indicated heat pump technology would inevitably replace them.

Perhaps they will?

However, it is possible that doing so could undermine any ensuing court cases, if ever there are any.

Anyone can make a mistake and no apology is required or expected.
Wrong. If you are a Brexidiot, a mistake is only something that a remainer can make. If you admit your mistakes, it shows a weakness and you must live a life filled with embarrassment for eternity.

It makes perfect sense. You burn a load of gas to create heat, you then turn 20% of that heat into electricity and throw the remaining 80% away in a cooling tower. You then send the precious 20% electricity yield to people’s homes where they turn it back into heat again. We are living in wonderful times.

Heat pumps are superb, far better than I could have imagined.

My new Nissan Leaf e-car uses one for both heating and cooling and its performance in both modes while using miniscule amounts of current is extraordinary.

And sending it across the country through transmission lines can lose up to 7% more of the original generated power, plus whatever is lost in voltage reduction at sub stations.

I did write: Possibly even a good thing if done properly.

I didn't define "properly" because I am no energy scientist. It will also depend on the details of the house (or whatever). For example, a ground source (or water source) heat pump installation might make sense even with the issues you mention. And anyone living near a power station could be in line for a source of nicely warmed water.

And locally generated electricity, for example solar or wind, together with storage might be quite effective.

Yes, there are lots of difficulties. No, I don't think they can be overcome in the time period to next year. Hence my assessment that it looks to me to have some possibilities but not as an election pledge.

ADDED:

Possibly also worth checking who will benefit financially from a no-gas policy. Any backers of no-deal?

Gas losses are also significant. The industry claims not much more than 1% but I have seen other informed parties suggest possibly nearer 10%.

I do know that we had a gas leak in our old house (actually, under the drive and in the garden). When fixed, there were at least five separate leaks. We had reported the smell of gas several times and it was always deemed insignificant. When they dug it up it was coming out at quite a rate releasing huge bubbles of gas detection foam. I am quite convinced that was losing more than we were using.

I can’t wait to move into my house that Brexit built.

The principle you describe is correct however your fractions are all wrong. ..and that is why heat pumps work. In addition you are ignoring that central production of the electrical energy, means that the air scrubbers can be much more effective. I am disinclined to give you a tutorial on the thermodynamics of the process

It also doesn't apply if the electricity is not generated from gas (or coal, oil, etc.) - such as wind or even nuclear.

Thank you for restraining the desire to satisfy your inner insecurities concerning intelligence. Based on the previous posts you have made on matters pertaining to thermodynamic principals, you would be hopelessly wrong, again.

I am content with my knowledge of thermodynamics.

I was going to make a joke about you kissing that potty mouth of hers but you’d probably take it the wrong way.
