I have no reference to a quotation that at the time of the Scottish Referendum,that Spain would VETO any application by Scotland.. indeed the BBC website in November 2013, indicated that the Spanish PM was insisting that Scotland would have to be independent before the decision to be admit it could be entertained. .. Again a very proper course of action.
But since a withdrawal agreement from the UK would take time to be actioned, the same time could be used for preparing the accession of the new or continuing member state. That is very far from and the very antithesis of a VETO.
So no .. , and even more pertinent, current reports regarding Spain and reported in current newspapers,
I await a correction.

Poor Boris he was he least impressive of a poor lot. Boris said people had taken his words and escalated them where he had made gaffes, and skirted round the fact that he botched the job as Foreign secretary and got that poor woman into a worse situation re her sentence.
Rory made the most sense about taxation, but so what?
And Boris evaded a question about Heathrow and claimed the London London Exclusion Zone was his?
While great entertainment it won't make any difference to the fact that Boris will get the job.
And the last question "You will get the job without being elected" hit Boris between the eyes as it was pointed out to him he had said the same thing about Gordon Brown.
"This is different" he declared "We have an emergency now!"
Yes, indeed we do Boris, and who was the main culprit in bringing it about?

That it is 5 years old is not at issue, because I was referring to the Scottish Referendum. But it would deserve READING the article closely At no point does the Spanish Government use the word VETO, ..that is the comment by the Guardian Reporter.
Both this and the BBC website item of November 2013,are internally consistent,and consistent with my previous assertion. .. No EU Country had Vetoed an early admission of an independent Scotland into the EU.
What I actually wrote, and still stand behind is ....
"Now At the time ,I believed that the Westminster position was wrong..and the only thing stopping their immediate accession would have been a veto from what would have been an England+ NI . The other 27 countries would have had no problems in fast tracking their application. "

Indeed. But even if ready I would still have preferred them to have their own EU like bloc. That would have kept the EU smaller and more manageable and a partially Slav buffer between Russia and the EU would have been valuable defensively and probably diplomatically too.

Demographically, we like germany need a constant influx of young workers as well as consumers and custom free access to new growing markets. East european countries provide all that. And the conditions the eu insist for joining created a road map towards greater democracy and rule of law for them.
