Seaborne Freight:

Firm with no ships has Brexit ferries contract cancelled

Labour says the decision to terminate Seaborne Freight's deal shows Transport Secretary Chris Grayling "is not up to the job".

Clearly as usually where Grayling gets involved
"Due negligence" was observed
..................................................
But never Fear
The government is already in advanced talks with a number of companies to secure additional freight capacity...

Tommie,Tommie, you are better than this. We are a Republic, and hard fought to make it so. We have a Government a state,a legislature,a judicial system .. and even better a constitution . As a sovereign state we are empowered to make alliances with other sovereign states , including the UK and 27 others in an organisation called the EU. We are also enthusiastic members of the UN, to the extent that the probability of serving overseas for an Irish Army officier is higher than for any equivalent in any other army.
We have never fully had economic independence, primarily because of the influence of UK property conglomerates, and the size of the influence of British distribution networks on retail. It is only in the post EEC days ,that we have succeeded in diminishing the importance of UK trade,to an equivalent amount of EU trade. For that I do acknowledge the influence of USA inward manufacturing investment .We would be much further along that road, were it not for the disasterous sequence of events we look back at as the Troubles.. A sequence which Orange intransigence against civil rights played a serious part. I am not underplaying the obnoxious behaviour of the PIRA.
When that had finally been quitened, the irrational exuberance, in the South ,leading to a property bubble has seriously also hurt our economic sovereignty.. but we are working our way through that.

You may not like to hear this but the EEC and EU has played much more fair with us than the UK did and does.
When we drill down through the aforementioned waffle and obfuscation answer me this - what will be your `Republics` response to the EU when they impose the new EU levels of Corporation Tax?

Will you say NO we`re not having that, we`re keeping it as it is!!

Err...not likely,

you will as usual do as you`re told by the dictators in the EU - you don`t have any choice in the matter - you are now a vassal state, you will obey

and as usual with aggressors you will adopt the usual irish Stockholm Syndrome mentality
"Ach to be sure it`ll be grand lads" :(

The reason the Seaborne contract collapsed is because the ships were going to be provided by the Irish
based Arklow Shipping Company with its fleet of 50 ships... Yes 50. Who have decuded to withdraw.
Perhaps you did not see the Irsh Navy ships because they are on Fisheries Protection and drug interdiction in the Western Atlantic and on humanitarian relief in the Mediterranean..

Finally Tommie you have got it in one, one of the many reasons we in RoI want UK in the EU ,is as support for our Tax regime. Retaining it will be made more difficult by your absence.

Time is running out
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-07/brexit-is-nine-days-away-for-exporters-sending-ships-to-asia

Brexit Is Nine Days Away for Exporters Sending Ships to Asia

“For many companies, it’s not 50 days away, hard Brexit happens nine days from now,” Stephen Phipson, chief executive of the EEF manufacturing lobby group, said. “Those are the first ships that are going to land post-March 29 in southeast Asia. If products get loaded on the ships, exporters have no idea when they land whether they’ll be on a 20 percent tariff regime. Will they need rules of origins certificates?"
Phipson’s remarks hammer home the real-world implications of the limbo that companies faces as lawmakers squabble over the shape of Brexit. Britain has about 40 trade deals with 70 nations through its EU membership, and, to ensure continuity, Trade Secretary Liam Fox is trying to get those countries to agree to trade with the U.K. on the same terms after Britain leaves the bloc.

You're the second Leaver currently posting who hadn't a clue what the Stockholm Syndrome is.

It can only apply to a person held captive over time in total isolation from all human company other than their one captor, and only sometimes then.

and solely for Fleccs benefit..

Stockholm syndrome is a condition that causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity.

As I posted. The Stockholm Syndrome can only apply to physically close relationships between human captives and their captors, lacking any other human contact. The strict psychological definition is only in a one to one relationship.

It can never occur between large numbers of humans enjoying free choice of human contact and a remote organisation.

That would be an oxymoron.

Did you miss "in total isolation"?

Far from being isolated the RoI is enjoying the full support of some 26 nations, making their current position of strength far superior to that of the UK.

Leo is loving it.

Don't worry folks everything is under control

I am hearing a panic going on inside DEFRA as they realise fish exports from the UK to the EU need an approved Border Inspection Post (BIP) at the port or airport for the fish. Also Fish will also have to have a Catch Certificate and Health Certificate. Not ready for March 29th.

Just a little detail....

The sense of solidarity which Ireland has received from the 26 has been a source of comfort. The statenents which D. Trusk had made prior to the "hell speech" ,were well structured and pertinent

Entirely optional within one's own borders, hence the loss of sovereignty being a fantasy.

The non-optional is the inability to export our own option choices to elsewhere in the EU. Keeping to the pedelec theme for example, the many French under 14 youngsters in London cannot ride their pedelec here, even though they could elsewhere in the EU. Conversely, if you have a legal throttle pedelec here, you cannot hop on a ferry or Eurostar and ride it legally elsewhere in the EU.

The S class speed pedelecs are another example, permitted in Germany, The Netherlands and Denmark now, but nowhere else in the EU unregistered as motor vehicles.

A more extreme example is that in France 14 year olds can drive power and speed limited cars, and for many years this was without any form of licence, though now they have to have a simple safety certificate.

And such differences are true in all areas. For example, although the EU Commission want to harmonise the age of consent, only one country has made any change, and that to a graduated penalty system, not a truly fixed age. Thus the age of consent in EU countries varies from 18 years down to 12 years for all and any form of sexual expression.

All these are demonstrations of EU countries exercising their sovereignty over EU law.
.
Hmmm. I was thinking more like setting tax rates - or having to listen to the ECJ - big things. Being able to set your own budget - you know like Italy right now is going to be fined for setting spending plans outside EU rules (even though France does the same thing).

Like with Ireland's corporation tax rate - that's not up to them really is it - the EU will make them change that. Thats the sort of control I was thinking about.

Or set your own interest rates. But so long as you're part of the Euro - then that's not up to you either is it?

There's a tonne of stuff you can't do. You can't make trade deals with other nations.

In other news - I guess Danny is happy Ireland beat Scotland in the Rugby.

Oh really??!!

Wait for the screams when corporation tax and vat is increased by their unelected masters and they will be called upon to fill the void left by British annual contributions!

Exciting times ahead - Leo will love it :D

I knew what I was voting for. Out of the single market and customs union - out from under the ECJ and no more free movement we get to say who can come live here.

Was pretty clear to me.

This is the EU charter of rights which the UK and Poland opted out of (I have resumed for brevity):

  • Dignity - guarantees the right to life and prohibits torture, slavery, the death penalty, eugenic practices and human cloning.
  • Freedoms - covers liberty, personal integrity, privacy, protection of personal data, marriage, thought, religion, expression, assembly, education, work, property and asylum.
  • Equality - covers equality before the law, prohibition of all discrimination including on basis of disability, age and sexual orientation, cultural, religious and linguistic diversity, the rights of children and the elderly.
  • Solidarity - covers social and workers' rights including the right to fair working conditions, protection against unjustified dismissal, and access to health care, social and housing assistance.
  • Citizen's Rights - covers the rights of the EU citizens such as the right to vote in election to the European Parliament and to move freely within the EU. It also includes several administrative rights such as a right to good administration, to access documents and to petition the European Parliament.
  • Justice - covers justice issues such as the right to an effective remedy, a fair trial, to the presumption of innocence, the principle of legality, non-retrospectivity and double jeopardy.
The government of the Czech Republic wanted to opt out too but they were voted down by the Czech senate which is controlled by the opposition party.

Why on earth the UK parliament doesn't want UK citizens to have the rights (and obligations) in the list above is for you to decide...
Well - free movement. No thanks. Justice - the ECJ version - no thanks. I could go on.

Thanks for everything - but we'd like to do things our way from now on.
