Brexit, for once some facts.

And an amusing response further down on the same page
"
Marina Hyde has a new column on Brexit. It is hard to do justice to the some of the political delinquency that has been on display, but, as usual, Marina is up to the task. Here is an extract.
"
And yet, there are hourly reminders that it could be a lot worse. European Research Group henchman Steve Baker MP has declared that the four Eurosceptics who have quit the cabinet – Boris Johnson, David Davis, Dominic Raab and Esther McVey – should decide which one of them will run as a Brexit PM. What a banquet of choice for the British people that would be. According to YouGov polling this week, Boris Johnson’s approval ratings are currently minus 35, David Davis’s are minus 19, Dominic Raab’s are minus 21, and Esther McVey’s were not polled, presumably on the basis that the recently departed high priestess of universal credit would break their measuring device.
Incredibly, though, Boris still spent the weekend casting himself as Aslan in some abortion of a Narnia metaphor, when he’s absolutely the biggest Edmund ever to stalk the earth. “Betray my family for a bit of high-end Turkish delight? Yes please!"

From the Irish Times Fintan O Toole

Brexit looks like it was written by the Marx Brothers.

When my Wife (Who is Irish) saw this her response was
"Now there's a novelty , to be sure!"
I do so love the genuinely Irish subtle turns of phrase she has!
She said she wants some new shoes before Christmas as
"I'm down to me uppers."
How could anyone want to leave the EU where the subtle differences between ethnic groups can make us smile and enrich us all?

Theresa May Told Top EU Officials She Intended To Pull The Brexit Vote 24 Hours Before She Told Senior Cabinet Ministers

The prime minister spoke to EU officials about her thinking on Sunday, a senior source told BuzzFeed News, but the cabinet was not told until 11:30am on Monday.

When was Uncle Vladimir let in on the act?

I thought the expression, 'A deal's a deal' actually meant something. It seems, however, that to Theresa May and her acolytes, welching on a newly-struck deal comes as easily as lying.

After trumpeting her sealed deal with EU representatives, and now behaving like Oliver Twist, how can anyone in Europe or the world at large now believe anything that comes out of that lying woman's mouth?

I'm sure the only reason that 48 no-confidence letters, calling for her to step aside or face a leadership challenge, haven't been received by Brady of the 1922 committee is that they are terrified of splitting the party and creating the circumstances whereby a GE would necessarily result, a GE that would put them back in opposition, probably for at least a decade.

I think the ERG have burnt their boats, isolating themselves.

As one minister remarked, their antics could bring about the thing they want least, a referendum and remaining.
.
I suspect that they didn't actually burn their boats, but when they started sinking Quickly tired of bailing water out, and decided drilling holes was simpler, after all Professor Minford has assured them they could walk on water.

As I posted before, a fixed backstop is likely to be what Theresa May is seeking to try to get off the DUP hook.

Would the EU refuse it to her but allow it to JC?

Politically a very dangerous tactic, opening them to accusations of interference in national politics.
.
I would agree with that assessment. There will be no time limited backstop for NI. What there can be is a list of acceptable milestones or actions which would limit the requirement for a backstop. If any other politician were to" show willing" to be flexible, the EU side would assist. It is no business of Dublin whether the UK chooses to include the entire UK in or outside the backstop, but it does matter that the NI is included.

I suspect that inclusion is to protect the interest of the 48%, for the UK to remain in the customs union by the backdoor.
A ploy which could not escape the ERG.

The last paragraph I have quoted is worth a glance.

Brexit study finds significant decrease in diehard leave backers

Britain Thinks research also finds number of strongest remainers has risen by 5%

Britons are growing ever more pessimistic about the state of Brexit negotiations, with even diehard leavers angry with how the past year has gone for their cause, a wide-ranging new study has found.

The research by Britain Thinks found a significant decrease in the strongest supporters of Brexit and an increase in the most pro-remain voices.

Yet, the researchers also found little consensus for a way out of the chaos. Voters were generally negative about the prime minister’s Brexit deal and became even more so when the deal was referred to as “Theresa May’s”.

However, the study also found support for a second referendum had slipped slightly since June and a majority were deeply concerned about the prospect of no deal.

The analysis, carried out over the weekend, is based on the views of voters who participated in the thinktank’s “Brexit Diaries” study from 2017, which had mapped the opinions of 52 leave voters and 48 remain voters, as well as a poll of more than 2,000 voters.

The study had categorised voters into “diehards” who backed Brexit enthusiastically, “cautious optimists” of both leavers and remainers who were hopeful of making a success of Brexit, “accepting pragmatists” of disappointed remainers who believed the referendum result should be honoured, and finally the “devastated pessimists” who could not see any positives to leaving the EU.

Researchers found the number of “diehards” had shrunk significantly, from a third of the public to just over a quarter. The number of “devastated pessimists” has risen by 5% – overtaking the “diehards” as the largest number of voters.

Both the diehards and the cautious optimists in the study were negative about the prime minister’s deal, calling it “exasperating”, “uncertain” and “frustrating”. Overall, 44% agreed with the description that the deal was “the worst of all worlds”.

Not really because it cannot be shown there is any loss or suffering to anyone, either actual or intended.

Our opinions on outcomes aren't evidence of course.
.
There are crimes which do not, at least in their immediate effects, cause loss or suffering. For example, if I were to personate someone in an election where that did not actually affect the result.
