When you read this the brexit folly becomes much clearer. The UK has always had silly ideas, sometimes they are brilliant and improve things. Those are the rare ones unfortunately...
The EU was beginning to make inroads into this culture of officially applied indifference, but alas Brexit will reinforce the principle of steady as you go.

From the Daily Mirror
"
Meet Liz Truss. She's the Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

Last night, she said in an official speech, which was posted on the government's website: "Government's role should not be to tell us what our tastes should be.

"Too often we're hearing about not drinking too much, eating too many doughnuts, drinking from disposable cups through plastic straw, or enjoying the warm glow of our wood-burning Goves... I mean stoves."

Freudian slip? unlikely......but funny anyway!;)

Around the turn of the millennium a new company was proposing a freight rail route from there, skirting around London's perimeter and heading into the Midlands and North. That could well have provided what you propose with huge benefits, but as ever in Britain, the Nimbys had their way and progress was killed once again, the company folding.
.
That would have been good - but not as good as if it had been built-in (or at least designed-in) before the tunnel had even been built.

Europe's migration crisis: Could it finish the EU?

Hardened Eurosceptics might love to think the EU's in trouble, but as leaders gather in Brussels for their summer summit on Thursday, dedicated Europhiles are also sounding the alarm.

"The fragility of the EU is increasing," warns EU Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker. "The cracks are growing in size."

Couldn`t have put it any better Mr. Juncker,

The End is Nigh LOL!!

Lets all have a quiet moment of Reflection, Our Thoughts tonight are with whats left of the EU

There are two ways of looking at national service. If a democratic country is to have armed forces, then all the citizens without exception should be required to participate. It forces the government to realise that any military adventures will have direct consequences with the voting public.
When a country goes for a having a small elite army , then it may very well have these adventures, as only a very small section of the population will be directly affected.
The other side of the coin is that modern technology has made the training of soldiers so involved and intricate that the rudimentary training that two years would offer is useless...

... But of course we have not had national service or conscription in Ireland, . The British war office was afraid to introduce it in 1914 for fear it would be counterproductive, and employed persuasion instead.. , so I don't have any detailed knowledge of what it does to a society.

It is "A national service" not a national military service, the military are going to run it and probably teach things like first aid, survival techniques and whatnot. 16 year old kids from some parts already know what an AK47 looks like and how it works... It would be good if they could do parachuting and the navy teach them to sail, the airforce glider flight etc. Experiences that 16 year old's would be marked by and carry on into later life.

The cracks are appearing because a lunatic right wing fringe is making a co-ordinated power grab world wide and trying to put the Human race back a hundred years to a time we should be trying to put behind us.

Why do you gloat over such a possibility? only an idiot would like to see the rise of right wing fascism again in Europe.
Be careful what you gloat over.

You say "The End is Nigh" if it is then you won't be laughing about it.

and then you said
"Lets all have a quiet moment of Reflection, Our Thoughts tonight are with whats left of the EU"

Just change the last two letters to UK , as you aren't likely to want to remain in it for long.

Basically it reduces the number of young people on the unemployed lists for a couple of years.
Oh, and it keeps the hooligans off the street some of the time, and makes them traceable for the rest.

On balance what were the benefits?
It was a waste of the resources of the young generation for three years in the hope of achieving something their parents couldn't manage, and to try and indoctrinate them into being gullible cannnon fodder, which didn't work either.
And of course it made the unemployment figures look better.

If the EU fails, then there will be a drive to bring it back for the same reasons that didn't work before.
Great fun, at the time if you like being someone else's monkey.

that's the same kind of reasoning leading to the rise of nationalism spreading across Schengen.
Schengen removes more than border posts and guards of member countries, it removes also the natural comfort blanket around their deeper self defense mechanism.

""Lets all have a quiet moment of Reflection, Our Thoughts tonight are with whats left of the EU".
Let's do that and see what we get, imagining that the whole EU thing breaks up.
What will Europe be like?
Germany would emerge as top dog and form a grouping with France and Italy
most likely
The Germans are very good at forming federations after all, so let's call it something catchy such as the EF (Euro Federation)
(Germania would be more appropriate, but carries bad vibes from the past)
Basically still with enough muscle to count in international trade and affairs .

The rest of us would simply be at the mercy of the EF, USA, China and the Far East Tiger economies and become secondary nations living on whatever the big three care to throw our way.

And don't forget Putin can be expected to "put the boot in" (not to our benefit)

And all this started by whom? the nations that set the middle east aflame with military interventions that caused huge population movements.
Oh dear wouldn't that be us among others?

And who has used this movement as one of the excuses to justify damaging European unity? why Brexiteers of course.

And who suffers from this rash decision?
Not Germany, France or italy, but the other nations, most prominent of which is the UK
Congratulations

Another word for xenophobia?
no, The self defense mechanism is there, in every country, it's just dormant until 1.4 millions arrived in Germany within a couple of years.
They have crossed many borders and triggered their self defense mechanism.
