xenophobia
zɛnəˈfəʊbɪə/
noun
noun: xenophobia
dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries.

AKA "Self defence mechanism"
It's nothing to do with dislike tho OG.
Fairly sure Australia didn't actually dislike me when they turned down my application to emigrate there. Could have gone to NZ but been put off kiwis.

you of all people should show better restraint.
Countries like Hungary or Italy do not have problems with xenophobia, otherwise their tourism would not flourish.
they have problems with nationalism.

The word meaning of the word xenophobia is quite clear, the baggage attached to it has blurred the actual meaning, which is simply descriptive of a point of view and has become fashionably considered derogative.
It is simply descriptive that's all.
Are you discounting the dictionary definition because it doesn't suit?

Europhiles are supposed to espouse values that they say the EU champions: tolerance is top of the list, OG.
Treating nationalists as xenophobes is uncalled for.
If you come to their country as tourists, would you expect those nationalists to refuse you entry? If you own a holiday home in Italy, would you expect they burn it down?
(BTW, I know Corsican nationalists would back in the 50s and 60s).

no, The self defense mechanism is there, in every country, it's just dormant until 1.4 millions arrived in Germany within a couple of years.
They have crossed many borders and triggered their self defense mechanism.
Which is temporary. Post WW2 they imported well over 3 million Turks to repopulate for production and many hated that. But now they and particularly their offspring are so well integrated that no-one even mentions them.

It's minimal. The large scale of inter-marriage is far greater in effect and will continue to make difference diminish and seem normal.

Well over a hundred years ago at the turn of the 19th to the 20th centuries we had a vast influx of Eastern European Jews flooding into such places as Hackney and Stepney. Most barely spoke any English.

Today their offspring are seen as Cockneys, many of them the London taxi drivers regarded as archetypally English.

Discrimination disappears with time, as shown by the fact that we are all immigrants of one kind or another.

Europe's migration crisis: Could it finish the EU?

Hardened Eurosceptics might love to think the EU's in trouble, but as leaders gather in Brussels for their summer summit on Thursday, dedicated Europhiles are also sounding the alarm.

"The fragility of the EU is increasing," warns EU Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker. "The cracks are growing in size."

Couldn`t have put it any better Mr. Juncker,

The End is Nigh LOL!!

Lets all have a quiet moment of Reflection, Our Thoughts tonight are with whats left of the EU

Heh - Heh - Heh :D
Not so long ago, we were having it rammed down our throats at every turn that we needed migrants to fill job vacancies and pay taxes & National Insurance so that such organisations as the NHS could survive. I have always thought, and still do think, that this is total BS and that it is a lie equal in magnitude to the notorious Boris Bus.

I think that migrants are a drain on the NHS, in particularly those who originated from outside the EU and either arrive in the U.K. clinging to the differential of a lorry or via some sort of fudged EU citizenship. The truth is, the government have absolutely no idea how many fall into this category, but you can be sure that all official statistics will heavily play down the numbers. These are extremely bad figures for any government and you can be 100% certain they don’t want them getting out.

This country has received migrants from other nations going a long way back in time. Those migrants arrived at a time when there was no welfare or health system, so had to provide for themselves. These days it’s different, there is a financial cost. Today we hear talk of a tax on workers & pensioners over 40 in order to pay for health care, which seems very unfair. Statistically a worker / pensioner over 40 is more likely to need health care than a person in their 20s & 30s, but the older worker has been paying into the system for much longer and has already made a greater contribution than a younger person or indeed an Immigrant. The older person has a long payment history, it’s what they have been paying for during their working lives. It should be money in the bank for their future health care in older age.

Here is the problem. Many many people have come to the U.K. and they have no payment history, no credits in the system, and they are taking out more than they are putting in. As well as being obscenely inefficient, the NHS is overburdened with non contributors. It’s a bit like millions of people taking out house insurance and all claiming the house has burnt down after the first month’s premium has been paid. The whole house of cards has collapsed and now our previous payments have been stolen in order to try and rebuild it. Like education , the justice system & just about every other public service, the NHS has collapssed under the weight of an out of control population explosion fuelled by migration. That’s why the EU is cracking and breaking. People aren’t stupid, they can work out that when migrants, from god only knows where, flood into Northern Europe from the south, they are going to bring down their public services such as health care, as has happened here. The U.K. is particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon due to its very generous NHS, but other countries are also exposed.

So, the contribution ordinary people have made towards public services & welfare during their working lives has literally been stolen from beneath them. It’s all gone, and now they face poor care, long waiting times and rationed life saving treatment for their loved ones. The money has been hosed out like a confetti fountain to anyone. Now they want to squeeze everyone for even more money to pay for the continuing & unabated flow of takers. This will end the EU, people are totally sick of it and they are angry.

.. do you have figures to back this up or is this just a simple rant. By figures I mean the comparative amounts of national income, expressed as a fraction of GDP spent on things like NHS, Police and Fire services , Army , Education , as a function of time, and referenced against national tax take. In earlier decades, the UK economy, and it's currency, was bouyed up by north North sea oil, as this declines a number of chickens are coming home to roost.

A great rant, but not based on truth. Our population growth has been at a perfectly normal rate, and lower that of most of the world.

Much of the immigration has been by exchange, our citizens moving to other parts of the world.

A major part of the population growth has been the very large increase in average lifespans of much of the population.

And it's that large growth in much older people, predominantly our native population, that is the greatest burden on the Health service now, since their good health span isn't matching their lifespan.

And the long established epidemic of obesity and excess weight is another part of the huge growth in demand on the NHS, causing a leap in the incidence of type 2 diabetes and all the many complications that stem from that.

Excess weight and long lifespans have led to numerous operations previously unknown, like joint replacements, stomach reductions, diverse transplants, stents and bypasses. Plus a huge increase in long known procedures like cataract surgery.

That's why the emphasis now is on healthy living through sensible eating and regular exercise to get the healthy lifespan to match the duration one, and thus reduce the NHS burden.

Immigration is a minimal part of the problem, most immigrants being far younger than our population average and placing little demand on the NHS.

Matteo Salvini is happy to be called a populist and please, before you take it the wrong way, I am against the rise of populism in Europe.
What Salvini has done has not breached the EU human rights convention. He does not allow NGO run boats to ferry refugees from rubber boats to any of Italy's safe ports where they can claim asylum status. He does not stop refugees to come by any other means.
Ask yourself, if the boats are not there, would there be more or less deaths?

This is what rules in Italy
from Wikipedia
"In Italy, the most prominent right-wing populist party is Lega Nord (LN),[71] whose leaders reject the right-wing label,[72][73][74] though not the "populist" one.[75] LN is a federalist, regionalist and sometimes secessionist party, founded in 1991 as a federation of several regional parties of Northern and Central Italy, most of which had arisen and expanded during the 1980s. LN's program advocates the transformation of Italy into a federal state, fiscal federalism and greater regional autonomy, especially for the Northern regions. At times, the party has advocated for the secession of the North, which it calls Padania. The party generally takes an anti-Southern Italian stance as members are known for opposing Southern Italian emigration to Northern Italian cities, stereotyping Southern Italians as welfare abusers and detrimental to Italian society

Remember the definition
"Dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries."
The Italians are reverting to the days of City states considering themselves to be sovereign nations with that lot!
If that isn't a form of xenophobia I don't know what is!

If there were no boats would there be less deaths?
Who knows, but ask this more pertinent question.
How will the Refugee problem end if we keep setting the middle east ablaze with wars of agression on behalf on vested interests?

The European Union
that's the same kind of reasoning leading to the rise of nationalism spreading across Schengen.
Schengen removes more than border posts and guards of member countries, it removes also the natural comfort blanket around their deeper self defense mechanism.
The ones that feel insecure are often the ones furthest from the border zones. I see people all the time who are out of their comfort zone when they cross the border into Spain, we call them "les français de France". They are only there for cigarettes and cheap Ricard. Here many people speak two or three languages and have family ties "on the other side". They don't need comfort blankets.
