You could, of course, set your network connection to be Metred. That restricts the downloading of updates - to some extent.

Did you download the Fall Creators Update - that is pretty huge. I think some updates recently have been reissued more than once.

If I may go completely off topic, may I ask if anyone else has noticed something strange affecting their internet Data consumption?
Suddenly on Windows 10 it went sky high
This was 5th Dec to 4th January

And since I hadn't changed my pattern of use and never download Films or hour long programs I contacted the ISP, they suggested these were perhaps Windows updates.
But they still had the cheek to charge me a £10 surcharge for exceeding the Data limit for the month.
I had never used more than a third of my monthly allocation in the past over a period of years.
I smelled a Rat.

So I fired up my old Laptop, installed Linux Mint, and this was the result for the following month
5th January to 4th February.

On just one day (Jan 26th) I used Windows 10 instead on Linux mint,browsed and uploaded my daily image to Blipfoto and used 10 times as much Data as I did all other days using Linux.

The questions that come to mind are

1. Is this simply a very poor indeed updating system Microsoft have imposed on us.
2. Or are we Being used as an unwitting part of some sort of File Sharing "Torrent" network as "seeds" by Microsoft (or others?)
3. Or perhaps as a Freebie resource for the fabled "Cloud" without us knowing?

At this point let me say that may be just a case of the old maxim.

Odd that even the ISP didn't know where all the Data was going.
Anyway when I come on the Net it will be via Linux,not Windows 10 from now on!

I’m not sure what you have been doing, but some activities associated with excessive internet data usage can lead to blindness. I’ve also heard that God kills a kitten each time it happens. Be warned!

Could you get an unlimited data package? I suspect that it’s a W10 update which has consumed your allowance.

As one of those smug bar stewards who gave up on Microshit......soft, soft! I don't know what came over this Mac just then....ahem!

I'm not surprised that Windows 10 is throwing up problems as every one of its predecessors all had problems to one degree or another - I think it's in the DNA. In my case, I bit the bullet and lashed out on a MAC in the late 1990s and then added a MacBook Pro in 2003. Since then I have owned a succession of different models of their laptops, fault diagnosis, repair and re-sell being my little hobby for a time.

My advice to anyone fed up of all the sticky glitches that seem to plague Windows is to download Linux and learn how to use its operating system. It doesn't take long. Otherwise, splash the cash and buy a Mac - they really are more than just the de rigueur accessory for TV shows - they're actually very reliable, quick and gremlin-free for the most part. I happen to know that a lot of the staff at ARM in Cambridge run Linux on their computers and there are some real geeks working there!

It's downloading the latest update, which is massive. You can't control that on win 10 home edition. it's fully automatic.

Unfortunately my windows 10 was a free update from windows 8 and doesn't have that choice built in.

Having given up with MS Windows about 10 years ago, I mainly use a Mac, but have recently dug out an old laptop to run Windows 10. It’s a low spec machine to which I have installed a solid state hard drive (SSD). I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. W10 seems stable and fast, much better than XP.

An SSD is a really worthwhile upgrade if you haven’t already done it. I’ve put one in my 8 year old iMac and it’s better than new. It boots up in under 15 seconds and applications are open before I’ve released the mouse click. SSDs are cheaper now as well.

Agreed 100% about SSD. Both in an iMac - which changed from almost unbearably slow to perfectly usable. And in my experience of hundreds of Windows PCs.

Having an SSD as boot drive and a spinning disc to provide greater capacity works well if you make sure you never fill up C: - perhaps not for the less capable users.

It gets the boot loader with code for the CD driver off a floppy the SSD isn't big enough to hold the system and it has 198 Mb of RAM

Yes, forgot to mention that. On my Mac, I keep my SSD “clean” with only the OS and applications on it. It’s at about 20% capacity. Video and photos are on a HDD. I replaced the DVD drive with an SSD and put the OS onto it. I then wiped the original HDD and use that for video & photos. I use Apple’s iCloud extensively and have 1TB of space, which again, I use for all my documents, photos, email etc. With the W10 laptop, I can access everything on the iCloud, so as far as those elements are concerned, it’s a cheap MacBook.

SSDs only on my main computer for years now, one solely for Windows and apps, the other much larger for the rest of the content.

yet, tightening immigration rules is one necessary remedy to the current British social division and it has to be applied to the transition period.

You can get a caddy unit that slots in to your PC like a drive bay. It allows you to hot-swop SSDs. Mine has 4 slots. You insert the SSDs like cartridges. That means that you can run multiple operating systems on the same PC, or, in effect, have a separate PC for each member of the family - useful if you have kids because they can't mess up any of your settings. I have SSDs for Win 7, Win 10, Win XP and Ubuntu Linux. To change operating systems, just close down and switch off, insert the new SSD in slot 1 and switch back on again. I have data SSDs in two of the slots, so I don't need to change them. Data is always available to all systems, or you can take your data SSD out to keep it safe.

I can't understand why all PCs aren't like this.

I am entirely laptop based these days presumably an external ssd drive would fit the bill, though I would have to get around the problem that it will not boot from an external drive or cd.
