Ellis island was primarily a public health facility. In the days before antibiotics, scarlet fever, whooping cough, diphtheria, were all contagious and likely to cause epidemics. The USA was not seeking to limit ingress, they were interested in growing their population. The visitor centre on the island makes that clear.
And it was called the isle of tears for good reason and many were rejected for non health reasons too

From the Daily Mail rather surprisingly
"
Tax burden to hit worst level for three decades: HMRC will take 37 per cent of national income - and we could face years more austerity
  • Experts have warned that businesses face the heaviest tax burden for 30 years
  • It will be the highest level since 1986-87, when Margaret Thatcher was in power
  • However, it seems Britain will still be running a deficit of £21.9billion at that time

One of the reader's comments
"The E.U caused all this. They made OUR Bankers Bankrupt us."
And another had a "GO"
"For 1200 years since the Saxons collected the Danegeld the English, later the British tax system was the most efficient and envied by governments across the world, just shows what a few decades of incompetent governments and intrusion by a f0reign power can do."

There's nothing like good old Trumpian "Alernative Facts" is there?

Positive news on Brexit! Just under half a Promise is better than one
If you are prepared not to waste money on the following
  • Controlling immmigration
  • Defending our Borders
  • Building new infrastucture etc., etc
And all those other silly things you didn't really care about, you can have the following
"
we could replace all the EU funding that currently takes place in the UK and still have about £8bn left over which we could use to reduce the deficit.'

During the referendum campaign, the official Vote Leave campaign suggested there would be £350million more every week to spend once Britain left the EU.

That is the equivalent of around £18billion a year. A dividend of £8bn would equate to around £150m a week.

In theory....does anyone believe that will happen when they have just CUT funding to the NHS
(And unemployment benefits for newly disabled in case you hadn't noticed.)
And it must be true 'cos the Daily Mail no less says it is!
In other words even Half a promise is extremely unlike to see the light of day.
Pity that.

It will take a good post-brexit government a few years to reduce the austerity and growing inequality that caused a lot of people to vote for brexit in the first place,
That's why I think the tories will get a good kicking either in 2020 or 2025.

Good +Government=Oxymoron
Good +Government+Brexit+Miracle=success

Reader comment from the independent
"Having Teflon coated themselves by offering an EU referendum (which was a shirking of their responsibilities anyway), they are no longer responsible for the consequences of Brexit. When the Brexit train comes off the rails it will be no fault of theirs - they are simply following "will of the people" -"people" being 37% of the Electorate or 27% of the Population, and if anyone can point me to a definition of Democracy that fits theses ratios I would be grateful."

Clearly this reader has failed to realise that the definition of democracy has changed it was
One person who qualified get one vote, therefore as follows
Data collected from the 382 local voting areas shows the provisional size of the UK and Gibraltar electorate indicates a UK record of 46,499,537.
That's 46,499,537 entitled to vote.
And how many can approve the final deal to enter the EU
Er one Woman
How many can say No thank you the deal isn't good enough we are not leaving the EU
Absolutely No one.

Well done Brexit voters you have taken back control, unfortunately one naughty woman has taken it away from you, Happy now?

I agree with that assessment. Brexit is the best rope to hang the tories with.
Brexit may deliver better growth on the long term but in the short term, there is an economic price to pay first. London will lose jobs. Hospitals will lose staff. It will be more difficult to persuade talented EU workers to come and settle here.
A good post brexit government will need to raise immediately taxes to reduce inequality and stop austerity.

I think that one of the failings of the EU is its inability to communicate about what it does. Full page ads in the papers for example. There is a show about the EU on Arte but only snobby culture loving leftist intellectuals like myself watch Arte... The show is both critical of things being done wrong and promotional of those being done right so a reasonable balance.
I'm more of a QVC watcher myself. Particularly in the early hours whilst eating crisps and biscuits. Can't say I've seen much information regarding the work of the EU.

They can't even reduce austerity now, and we're in a period of good growth, low unemployment etc etc. everything predicts things will get harder (people seem to have accepted that its a worthwhile sacrifice to control our borders etc etc) so how will any goverment be able to reduce austerity when we've left? Whilst also promising to solve the working class problems we have here now?

I did say a post brexit government will need to increase taxes.
Then brexit voters will have to accept paying the price.
This will be made clear in the next two years.

No matter which channel you switched to the result would be the same.
The odd thing is that no one thinks "That's odd" do they?
Well "Not spotted" there tillson!

Perhaps tillson would prefer that each posting carried either adverts for crisps and biscuits or short clips from "Strictly Come Dancing?" so that he knows when to pay attention?

I propose a vote of thanks to shemozzle999, who I nominate as the thread M.E.P. as he reports back faithfully from goings on in the EU without Straightening any Bananas, and he has a far better attention span regarding the business there than Farage or for that matter the entire Westminster Flying Circus of Political Clowns has ever managed.

Take a bow shemozzle999!

549 pages and 10976 messages. The above now ranks the highest out of all of them. Crisps and biscuits will always win.

Another potential positive of BREXIT had just occurred to me. I've been on a course / working in Poland for a couple of days and now moved on to Krakow before coming home. Staying in the hotel are a group of drunken English slappers (or am I supposed to refer to them as "disadvantaged" ?). They appear to be on a hen party, so no doubt one of them has let some waster blow his beans up her chuff and is now pregnant, hence the marriage. But I could be wrong about the pregnancy. Anyway, they were shouting and screaming on the landing at 4:00 am this morning, disturbing other guests.

My theory is that if the cost of travel and accommodation in Europe increased after BREXIT, these people won't be able to afford to go there. Result!!!

Well done, you have at last found something that can be put down as a Brexit bonus.... Oh, hang on a minute won't that mean they raise hell here instead?
