I saw that too. It seems absurd that anyone could consider they might be considered British when they clearly aren't. Does anyone know how they are designated under current EU rules, or if used directly in other EU countries (not involving Britain at all)?
All depends on the deal we get with the EU, both have been different cases. Japan because of the deal with the EU removing tariffs on cars from Japan over a five year period. Turkey because they've been working co-operatively with the EU on laws, including standards, trading and vehicle related ones. That's why they even have EU pedelec law.

If our deal gets no tariffs on the cars we make going into the EU, there's a good chance those parts from Japan and Turkey will be free of them too.

But if we end up on WTO rules with 10% tariff on our cars going into the EU, those parts will be hit too. And that 10% will mean around 15% on the retail price of each of our British made cars in the mainland EU countries once dealer margins, distribution and local VAT are added there.

Weird procedure - up through the groin while laid out on the platform under the scanner with the odd warm flushes of contrast coursing through the veins. Then afterwards having chat with the nurse while they pressed firmly the horse hoof plug to the artery. Hope yours went well.
Thank you. No warm flushes, actually at the time it was over I was shivering. They tried the arm first but no joy. The sealing up the groin was very painful ..so I looked up the technique yesterday and I see why. So I get to do a reprise next fortnight. My blood pressure is now so low, it just registers on the meter.

Britain has backtracked on the issue of fishing rights in UK waters in a last minute attempt to salvage Brexit trade talks.
The UK offered the EU a three-year transition period for its fishing fleets to leave British seas beginning from 2021.

That gives us plenty of time to sweep it under the carpet and pretend it never mattered and the Brexit fans to forget they got excited about it

I have to say I'm still chuckling at the notion that we refused to extend the transition period then offer a three year transition ourselves.

This is the so call fishing map

As far as I can see we have more to lose than the EU
Imagine for a moment if all neighboring nations dropped current agreements and insisted on the 200 mile limit!

you mean some fishing boat owners won't be able to sell their quota to the Dutch, French and Spaniards?

No pain when they did mine - plugging the pressurised hosepipe of an artery was quite nice with the nurse's firm hand :p - though remember no jumping about for a few hours afterwards. Funniest bit was they gave me a razor to prepare myself but nothing to put the pubes in - had to chuck it out the window. Hopefully made a nice bird's nest.

Ready to pop up nicely before the next election... (Assuming five years.)

Bercow may have been seen as an enemy. Hoyle was seen, I suspect, as far more an ally. But even he is laying into the government:

Speaker says government has treated Commons with 'contempt' over Covid regulations

Here are some extracts from Sir Lindsay Hoyle’s statement at the start of PMQs.
  • Hoyle accused the government of treating the Commons with “contempt” in relation to coronavirus restrictions. He said:
The way in which the government has exercised its power to make secondary legislation during this crisis has been totally unsatisfactory.
All too often important statutory instruments have been published a matter of hours before they come into force and some explanations as to why important measures have come into effect before they can be laid before this house has been unconvincing and shows a total disregard for the house ...
As I hope my early comments show I have not taken this decision lightly. I am looking to the government to remedy a situation I regard as completely unsatisfactory.
I am now looking to the government to rebuild the trust with this house and not treat it with the contempt that it has shown.

Just wondering if they are confusing motor trade and fishing?

Boris and co operate on the children's chase game principle, the last child to be touched is the one who is now on. So if we take for example where an entire engine is manufactured is say Japan and is then shipped over to the UK and put into a car. The fact that we were the last ones to touch the engine now means that the engine is British.

Boris cannot understand how the nasty EU just aren't able to see this basic principle, but that doesn't matter just as long as we get the extra 3 dozen jobs from our fishing industry due to Brexit. We therefore can declare victory and not worry about the tens of thousands of jobs we may well loose in the car industry.

Let's face it, Cameron or May could just have declared a victory and we could have carried on regardless.

We didn't really have to leave.

The simple way round that is to form a "Joint venture enterprise" with them and let them fish while pocketing a share of the profits

Our leaving the EU drastically changed our car engine status. The motor industry operates far more co-operatively than most realise, particularly with regard to engines. In the case of the Renault-Nissan alliance, some of the Nissans we make here use engines common to Renault and Suzuki which are made in France by Renault, in Hungary by Magyar-Suzuki or Nissan in Sunderland, with no previous tariff possibility involved in them or parts for them crossing the channel either way. Not so now of course.

Fiat make diesel engines for a number of car makers, including Vauxhall, so once again tariffs could be involved now we are out of the EU. That's further complicated now by Vauxhall being wholly owned by PSA (Peugeot-Citroen).

And of course the Oxford made Mini is affected since it's BMW engine is made from parts from both sides of the Channel. Indeed each crankshaft crosses the channel a minimum of three times to get it's manufacture completed, and that becomes four times for each Mini sold into the mainland EU. How does one sort out a tariff of 10% on each manufacturing or selling stage in that complex process? A nightmare.

If only Brexiters had understood all this as I did before voting, that tiny Leave margin would have vanished. They were warned of course so did know it, but preferred to listen to reckless idiots like Boris Johnson.

who do you call reckless idiots???
did you watch Trump/Biden slanging match last night?
As soon as Biden said the word 'smart' (about Trump's federal taxcode), I thought Trump was going to rip his head off.

Johnson's recklessness is in regarding the importance of any matter as solely relating to his personal interests.

For example, deciding to back the Brexit campaign against his true beliefs after his rival Cameron decided to support Remain, since that positioned him better for a future Prime Ministership.
