In Sweden some people are so impressed with the country's health chief Anders Tegnell, that they are having his picture tattooed on their arms, incidentally Sweden has a much higher death rate than many countries close by.

I have heard a whisper that once lockdown is finally over, Tommie plans on have a picture of Cummings on one arm and Boris on the other.

I can just about believe the trip to Durham to isolate if I’m feeling particularly benevolent.

However, to put his wife and child in the car and to then drive 60 miles to test his theory that he might be unfit to drive is not credible. It’s a lie contrived for the purpose of getting around the fact that he was spotted by the teacher. That then throws all of his story into doubt. Add in the fact that the kid coincidentally wanted a pi$$ just as they were passing access to woodland walks, where he was unfortunately spotted again, and this confirms the BS.

This is of the upmost importance because the rules were devised to keep us alive. The government must reinforce the seriousness and gravity of the situation by making an example of Cummings. He’s a liar, he’s arrogant and he is showing contempt for people who have suffered as a result of his government’s incompetence.
Of course his excuses are hollow, I don't know why he bothered, he should have just ignored all the witch hunters. He did no harm and your last paragraph is your usual puritanism.

Those you say suffered volunteered to suffer if indeed they did suffer. They had the same choices as Cummings and myself, using their minds to achieve the intended result of the rules or be automatons, sometimes achieving worse outcomes.

Cummings won't be going anywhere.

I saw an interview on tv with a medic from Stockholm a few days back. He was asked what's the policy on masks in Sweden, his reply was no one wears them...if you get sick you stay indoors. Seems to be working out just fine for them.....not.

How do you follow the science when the scientists say:

Cummings' actions show government cannot be trusted, says adviser

Sage scientist condemns ‘vacuum in the heart of government’

Puritanism. I like that word. I shall write it on a post-it note and stick it on my office wall.

Actually it is. For all of us it's a balance between deaths and economic harm done. We've got it so wrong we have the second worst death rate in the world AND immense economic harm.

Sweden does have a higher death rate than its neighbours but has avoided the economic harm of the rest of Europe. Since the deaths are predominantly of the less healthy elderly who have very limited lives anyway, it seems a good exchange.

Just to finish up .. While this was updated in May, the majority of the provisions are no different than the UKs March and April situation....It is of course Official UK policy.

People may only leave their home in any part of the UK if they have ‘reasonable excuse’ to do so. Legislation passed separately in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland lists the activities that are considered ‘reasonable excuses’, although these lists are non exhaustive.

The rules on leaving the house (as of 13 May) are set out below.

To obtain basic necessities
To exercise
To spend time outdoors for recreation
To seek medical assistance
To provide care or assistance to a vulnerable person
To give blood
To travel to work where it is not possible to work from home
To attend a funeral
To visit a cemetery, burial group or garden of remembrance
To fulfil a legal obligation
To assess critical services, e.g. social services
Parental arrangements
For a minister of religious leader to go to their place of worship
To move house
To avoid injury, illness or escape risk of harm

It's a balance between life and death flecc, the economy means absolutely nothing whatsoever when you're dead.

This has been one of Cummings most successful plots
Sorry flecc he is guilty as charged, knows this and will get away with it, but doesn't care because his"nudge" ploy has achieved his goal, which was
  1. Discredit Public faith in the lockdown
  2. Encourage the public to break lockdown by his example go back to normal living
  3. Protect the economy with a staged return to work
  4. Protect Boris from any blame for loss of life as this is now "The will of the people who are ignoring government advice"
  5. Please the paymasters that he and Boris serve for economic reasons.
The fact his journeying has been known about all along and only put into the public arena when the Government wanted the public back to work despite the risk for economic reasons, is the motivation of the timing of this latest swindle.

Gove was spinning plates this morning trying to continue the justification - and likely wondering at the back of his mind why he hasn't a 2nd country estate to hideaway in till it all blows over..

The hypocrisy of the rich and powerful was apparent the moment Charlie scapered to his country home in Scotland / same for Boris with Chequers - Cummings' might think himself an anti-establishment rebel rouser but the power has gone to his head gave him justification for his exceptionalism to head to his private bluebell woods.

Boccaccio describes the rich secluding themselves at home, where they enjoy quality wines and provisions, music and other entertainment. The very wealthiest – whom Boccaccio describes as “ruthless” – deserted their neighborhoods altogether, retreating to comfortable estates in the countryside, “as though the plague was meant to harry only those remaining within their city walls.”

As the UK headed for lockdown, reports flew in of wealthy homeowners rushing to the countryside, to their yachts or to private jets out of the country.

But where were they headed?

From castles and private islands to luxury underground bunkers with pools and home cinemas, we take a look at how the super-rich have spent lockdown.

Contrast that with:

Anab Ahmed weeps as she recalls the moment her four-year-old son asked: "Do we live in prison, mummy?"

She told him no, they were not locked-up against their will. But she believes the truth is their life is "not different from the people who are in prison."

"If I get sick I don't have any way to self-isolate myself from my children. If it happens, everyone will catch the virus," she says.

The single mother says government advice - which recommends that, where possible, sick people use a different bathroom and do not share a bed with others - would be impossible to follow.

The government says councils are required to help people who are worried about self-isolation and overcrowding, via local health protection teams.

Thanks to Ian Duhig on Twitter for pointing out that in 19th century English, the expression ‘Come, come, that’s Barnard Castle!’ was used as a response to someone who had offered a flawed excuse for their actions.
