Contact tracing app may not work with Apple or Google phones

The UK’s coronavirus contact tracing app, being developed as part of the government’s pandemic response, may not work with either Apple or Google phones.
Dr Michael Veale, lecturer in digital rights and regulation at University College London, said the UK is “really going against the grain” in its development of the app.
Comparing the government’s app with the app his team is working on, Veale said: “We’ve been working in a way where all of the matching between people happens on a user’s device, not in a central server, and that’s generally considered to be more privacy preserving. Whereas the UK has taken a different approach, which builds a social network of people in the cloud.”
“The problem is that Apple and Google, Apple in particular, have stated that they won’t allow this kind of central system to be created, it doesn’t work with their operating system,” he said. “And so the UK is really going against the grain and therefore it’s finding problems on both Google and Apple phones.”
He said he does not think the app will be up and running in the UK before June.
Cabinet minister Robert Jenrick denied the government was already working on a second coronavirus app, but said ministers would move to a different app if necessary.
“As far as I’m aware we’re not developing a second app but we are paying attention to the other apps that exist elsewhere in the world,” he told Marr. “And if we need to adapt our app or move to a different model, obviously we will do.”

Or maybe not. Unless half of us change phones.

His "not aware" statement probably follows in the tradition of "didn't ask, indeed, asked not to be told, so quite possibly true, but entirely meaningless".
I take it that by referring to "Google phones", he doesn't actually mean Google phones, but phones using the Android OS.

Yes,plenty of space for a bigger battery for the longer commute.
I'm quite sure they'll be restricted to stand-ons, no hobby horses allowed. I can see this becoming a backtracking law, rather like the Dutch permission for S-pedelecs and mopeds that soon saw lots of added restrictions.

Maybe we'll end up with a law that states you can buy one, own one, tinker with one in you shed but you can't actually ride one.

Maybe Brompton size wheels.
I'm in there as a trend setter! I motorised my Brompton three years ago with throttle only motorised front wheel

Now all I have to do is chuck away the pedals, cranks, chainwheel, chain, deraileur and cassette.
And I'm the first owner of one of the new Breed E scooters!

Which is not bad considering a bought the Brompton in 2004!

I see, all I have to do is Delete the words "Stay alert" to make more sense of it?
Basically it's no change, apart from the uses of:

"as much as possible"

"if you can"

"where possible"

and "limiting"

in place of "you must".

Or put another way, carry on doing your own thing but this time we won't fine you.

The old Tom Lehrer song came to mind
"Be prepared" (that's the Boy scouts marching song)

I wondered about this. I use a third party app to transfer data Written from my Apple Watch to the Apple Health and Activity apps (iPhone apps) onto Strava. The third part app (HealthFit) used to sit in the background and take care of this seamlessly without even needing opening the iPhone. It’s a very well regarded app.

Apple don’t allow third party apps to run like this now, I think from iOS 13 onwards, you need to run third party apps manually to transfer data to a server. This will render the government home made app approach useless as you would need have the app open and running in the foreground on your phone all the time. That’s not practical.

The above crossed my mind when they announced the app, but I thought if a thick idiot like me knows about this limitation, so will they. Seems I was wrong.

I suspect they will fanny about with their own app for weeks and then revert to the Apple / Google product when they finally concede defeat. More time me squandered.

Perhaps that was the intention? to just LOOK BUSY?

I have just heard that Johnson’s address this evening is a pre recorded speech. I wonder if that’s because he’s too ill to do it in one take?

I think this clown is far from recovered and in sufficiently good health to discharge the duties of PM.

My niece tells me some terrifying stories of how this virus can adversely affect you, seemingly randomly. A 35 year old nurse at her hospital contracted it six weeks ago, triathlete and in good health. She’s now using a Zimmer frame to get about. She’s chronically fatigued, and absolutely no stamina to walk more than a few steps without becoming exhausted. It seems like if you are unfortunate to have a certain make up, you are ******, regardless of previous health.

I would not be at all surprised, I thought he did not look at all well at PM Questions last Wednesday. I was listening to a Professor of Immunology in Liverpool Uni this morning on Radio 4. He said he caught the virus 57 days ago and is still having really bad days. He has done some research and has found there are many people who catch it and are in bad shape for weeks afterwards.

Don't solicit for your sister. That's not nice.
(Unless you get a good percentage of her price.)

I've repeatedly said that if he isn't up to it, he shouldn't be doing it.

He and everyone else involved owe us, the population of the UK, the right to have a PM who is as capable as ever he or she can be. If Johnson is not up to it, good bye. Adieu.

I'm glad to go
I cannot tell a lie
:D

Good riddance.
