In my own little niche, I know of considerable numbers of people who import their own medicines (which would otherwise be prescription-only). They do this because of the incompetence of the medical establishment in many areas.
Did that myself once. The idiots in the medical profession wanted me to suffer a full anaesthetic operation for no known purpose. That was because they had no answer to what I was suffering other than the anti-inflammatory I needed that they didn't approve of, but felt they had to offer something.

So I imported the necessary tablets which did the trick within a few days with no problems in the eleven years since.

I have decided that, if possible, I would try to go for alternative anaesthesia, maybe local or regional, rather than a general. I did for my lower wisdom teeth which were very difficult to remove.

If a line of coke is on a surface it who is in possession of it ? But like I said it was hard to tell if it was a joke or not.
Agreed that this is an arguable point. But I suspect that attempting to snort would be taken as an indication that the person is in charge of it. If it was in his house, on his table, and no-one else around, who else could be in possession? (I have no idea of the circumstances.)

You cannot compare your health service to ours.

You are always making this mistake.

Yours is completely different. The NHS is not for sale and that is what I called nonsense on.
Of course there are differences, but there are also similarities, what is BUPA except a version of our VHI?. Saying something is not for sale,is wonderful and very cheap. What legal barriers are in place to prevent it happening.
The way these things can be accomplished is that you gently starve the service of resources, Then the hard pressed managers look to cheaper alternatives, as in our case with the screening. Then you introduce a glossy new method or clinic . Then you close outlying centres and sell their assets, typically their land bank, . Then you say they are no longer fit for purpose or reinstatement would be to expensive. It is a long established playbook, and it plays just as effectively in the UK as here.

Nice one ,and fair until we hit statements like "to big to fail". The rich get to walk away from the consequences of their actions,or buy immunity

We have significant issues with GP surgeries which, in general, are owned by the doctors.

If a surgery decides they don't want to carry on, for any reason including not enough money coming in, they can shut up shop and leave people without an accessible surgery. And overload any neighbouring surgeries with their discarded patients.

Sometimes, it isn't just the really big boys who can wash their hands.

I once went the whole hog and went largely without anaesthetics for an open abdomen hernia repair.

In the Mail......You have to subscribe to read the Times.

I got the times free because I bought 10 quids worth of San Miguel for a BBQ. Used my wife's Waitrose card. Would never pay for a Murdoch rag.

For the record.

This bit in the articles is incorrect:

"Those buying an electric car can receive up to £4,500 off the purchase price through a Government subsidy scheme, which contributed to a surge in sales."

It was £4500 but was reduced from October last year to £3500.

Send you to a gulag? good heavens no!
Having to show your bare backsides in the local Co-op supermarket window for a couple of weekends will suffice
As to this
"No idea who he wants in charge or even which party."

You know very well I set out the sort of Government we need long ago on this forum, but you choose to forget
A permanent coalition where all MP's are members of the Government
Well I, d like Bananarama for christmas but that aint going to happen either..
Your desire needs a complete change of system which isnt on offer. Your voting options have to be on offer OG. Afraid yours are not. Besides look at coalitions we have had (got?) hardly a recommendation.
Do you want Cable, Farage, Boris, (or whoever), Corbyn?? Thats about your lot, and they all make May appear quite attractive, in both senses.

Must have missed it flecc. What are benefits of being awake. I, ve got an ablation coming up consultant assured me no more/less risky /successful without anaesthetics... Told him definitely want general. No problem.
Putting a camera and laser into my groin and working way to heart aint happening whilst I, m awake.. But I, m a wimp.

Main one was out of interest in the mechanics of the procedure, and also being able to take part in a small way.

And general anaesthetics delay healing and mean more protracted pain after an operation.

It's a variation on dentistry. Have jabs for fillings and one is left with a dead and swollen mouth area for ages afterwards and pain following that for a while. So after experiencing that a few times when younger I had all subsequent fillings done without any anaesthetic, a few moments of pain each time and then no problems.

I even had my last tooth extraction without anaesthetic since it was already a bit loose. One sharp jab of pain as the dentist twisted the tooth in it's socket and it was out. Walking out I crossed the road into Sainsburys and did my shopping without any discomfort before driving home.

So that's my preference, anaesthetics only when essential.

Somehow i think plod would take a pretty dim view of these semantic considerations ("it wasnt mine officer, i walked into the loo and, hey presto, there was this line of white powder so i thought i'd give it a sniff to check if its snuff"). Perhaps theyd give establishment grandees like gove more slack.
