Brexit, for once some facts.

If the current government were a company listed on the stock exchange, the board would have sacked Mrs May long ago and by now, the shareholders would be crying for blood at the performance of the board, supposedly looking after their interests.

Apart from the fact that May's 'Brexit' will undoubtedly see the departure of all foreign-owned carmaking plants in the UK, her friends in the money industry will necessarily rationalise their business, bringing about lots of 'for sale' and 'for rent' signs both in Canary Wharf and in the City proper.

There will remain the circle that cannot be squared across the Irish Sea yet May pontificates to the nation in this manner:

I thought Theresa May speech and her subsequent interview by Marr was very impressive,it probably stopped, for a while, the fighting inside the Tory party, not sure whether the EU will agree.
She seems to be saying that they can develop a mechanism that will be ‘not so bad’ but she admits that we will lose, are Brexiters prepared for life to be tougher after we Brexit?
It is becoming obvious that we had a good deal being part of the EU. Mays speech made reversing Brexit more unlikely because it silenced the Tory rebels.

Yes. It is in the nature of these idiots that they will enjoy the suffering on the basis of "We Brits can Take it", uttering the tired mantras about "Blitz spirit" etc.

It's why they still insist on speaking of the "Dunkirk spirit" as if that was a victory, rather than when we lost the second World War and had to be rescued by others.

Eventually today's young will rescue us from this madness by returning us to the EU, but it will then take many years to undo the damage this departure will have caused.

If we do want to rejoin the EU,it will probably not be on such good terms as before we left...the EU have already told us that we have lost Maggie’s rebate.
Looks like Trump has threatened a trade war with importers into the US,Chinese steel,EU cars....ironically the latter will hit the U.K. more than Germany....BMW,VW and Merc all have build factories within the US but JLR sells 120,000 cars into the US,a 25% tariff would really hurt....the EU are threatening reprisal tariff on Harley D. motorbikes.

No.
Politicians usually speak with a forked tongue.
Correct! Part-truths are worthless - only the whole truth and nothing but the truth is appropriate from a person in the highest political office in the land.

Being economic with the truth helps no-one and If something isn't the whole truth, what else should we call it? I know the answer.

So when the UK leaves the EU, what tariffs would Trump apply? Do we end up with an even worse situation that had we remained? Or does the USA remember something about a "special relationship" and remove any tariffs?

Or could we end up with a worse tariff situation even than the EU?

Almost certainly yes.

Or does the USA remember something about a "special relationship" and remove any tariffs?
What's special is that it only operates in one direction. Basically they tell us what to do, we do it.

Or could we end up with a worse tariff situation even than the EU?
Probably, since unlike other EU countries we don't manufacture in the USA to avoid tariffs.

Ambiguity and economy with the truth are essential lubricants for social interaction. Deviousness, telling lies , are not. It is necessary to know the difference. .. Diplomacy is the art of telling someone to go to hell in such a fashion that they , thank you and look forward to the trip.

Glad to see some in the Free State coming round to my way of thinking..
The `hard border` solution is out there folks!

I've considered it Tommie. A pre-referendum long time ago I posted that a way to tempt Eire to rejoin the UK would be to offer it lead nation status of the UK with the UK parliament sitting in Dublin.

Politicians love of power might just prove enough for acceptance and we in London would be happy to see the back of them.

Perhaps someone could copy across the recent posting I put on the EU anti dumping duty thread to this thread.
In brief the government have a new regulator within the current Trade Bill, this regulator known as the Trade Remedies Authority will replicate all current EU ADT into U.K. law,so that Hammond can continue to collect the tariffs into U.K. coffers.
So voting Leave doesn’t escape the ADT.
It does I suppose answer the Irish border problem, both sides will have the same levels of duty.
We may be better under WTO tariffs.
These things don’t receive much publicity!!!

Recycling old news Tommie, ? You are better than that. There is a very small population of "West Brits " centred around south county Dublin and a few locations in Cork. So one of them has written an article. I will assure you that it is in no way representative of the Irish people, outside a few golf and boating clubs

Here it is Dave:

I did wonder whether Brexit would eliminate the ADT on e-bikes. In fact I wondered if it would delete ADT on all currently loaded products.
But within the current Trade Bill going through the house is a new regulator, known as the TRA (Trade Remedies Authority),this would investigate duties to be imposed where goods are sold below cost price or unfairly traded or causing a surge in imports.
As this Bill will initially replicate all current EU law, then any ADT’s will automatically be imported into the Trade Bill. The duty collected will be put into our coffers not the EU,so it is in Hammonds interest to continue the ADT,it will probably be given a new name.
So those who hoped that ADT will be eliminated when we leave the EU will be disappointed,we may be better under WTO tariffs.
I think this is part of regulatory alignment....it does answer why the Irish border may ultimately be no problem,if May intends to put import tariff on N.I. which is the same as in Ireland, how good HMRC will be at collecting the tariff is another matter.
No point voting Leave to get rid of the e-bike ADT.
KudosDave
