Bosch underslung MTB cleaning out the crud

Has anyone taken the engine casings off to clean out the muck which must have gone inside? I am hoping this is an easy task as I would rather not pay someone to do it! It has a gaping hole in the front which selling dealer suggested gaffer tape! Any advice or experiences would be much appreciated..

It certainly does, why on earth have Bosch designed the casing open in this fashion to the gears? By contrast the Panasonic unit casings are completely sealed against anything entering, including moisture ingress.

I emailed Scott when I first bought it and they told me that everything in there is fully sealed against everything except total immersion! Still looking for a video of someone actually doing it!

Is the casing not just for aesthetic?
I'd had mine fully immersed on several occassions, had the gears not been sealed, I am sure they box would have failed.

It was my KTM, unfortunately stolen. Never did take it apart despite doing many muddy and wet off road rides.

The motor had been underwater many times and did not seem to complain. This leads me to believe that it was sealed electrically and mechanically.

Martin suggests a little mud in the gears, maybe a 1 off.

This is what Martin said:

"The pictures are of the inside of the motor cover, but some of this had made its way into the actual motor gearing. It was a bit of a mess in there with dirt and grit."

It seems the internals are not well sealed from this report, it should be impossible for this detritus to get anywhere near the gears. It is impossible on the rival Panasonic unit for example.

I agree, it does seem that the internals were not well sealed in this instance.
I'd like to think that this is not the case with every unit out there.

We have take a several apart and found nothing in the motor. However it does depend where you are riding, if you were riding off road perhaps it would be different. One thing Bosch did advise at the training was protecting the motor from spray when you have the bike on a bicycle rack.

We've been selling hundreds of thousands of Bosch eBikes around the world and this has never been a problem.

The best bit of independent advice about Bosch, comes from Bosch.

A recent new eBike dealer, which is going to be based at a BOSCH uk service centre in the south of England.

contacted Bosch in Germany and asked them which eBikes they should sell.

Contact Collison if you want to find out the answer.... the clue is they are not selling Haibike in their new store.

Thanks for the info.. I am not particularly worried, and the kit is really really good, its just that I like to keep things nice and clean and dont like this hole in the front (see photo) .It has been covered with gaffer tape to keep out the muck, but I am itching to take it apart to cleant it!

That doesn't make me confident though. If the halves of the gear casing were properly sealed as they are in the old and new Panasonic units, it could be immersed in water without anything getting in.

The battery cable runs on the underside of the downtube into a small hole in the motor casing.

There's a mm or two of clearance, but not enough to let in significant amounts of dirt.

Nope, as per the pic, the only hole is where that cable goes in near the top of the casing.

I've had a good feel around underneath - reminded me of a certain process at school - and the rest of the casing is solid plastic.
