You would be very disappointed Lynda, there is nothing there, only a message saying "Sorry! This forum is not accepting new posts." Or is it just me that is blocked from posting there?
To be honest I prefer everything out in the open. Of course if you want to say something in confidence, you can always PM.

I just thought you might prefer to be treated like a lady with more respect and deference, or did I get that wrong?

I've been a member for several years and have definitely noticed considerably more selling posts in the past few months. I don't know why.

They don't really bother me although I have in the past felt compelled to post in a thread asking about kits that was almost entirely full of trade replies recommending kits that were 2 to 3 times the price of what the poster could get that would fit his requirements.

As for trade members funding the site. Yes, of course that's true, but with unlimited bandwidth, unlimited webspace, database and free domain name now available for £6 per month the "funding" requirements certainly aren't what they used to be.

On a whole I would say no but one or two sellers plug items they have for sale a LOT more than others. Maybe there should be a limit on how many times they can plug there own items.
If I were to start a thread on lets say wallpaper I know of one seller that would try to sell me some although it maybe a bit old fashioned for my taste and maybe lead acid based.

That is very fair Frank and I don't see why anyone could have cause to complain about your posts;)

I think it is good that we have sellers on here. They can always be ignored and one would expect them to sell their wares above everyone elses, at every opportunity. But they pay for the privelege of doing that.

On the other hand they are also more knowlegable than most and can give good advice and pass you on to other people who deal more specifically with your problem if they cannot deal with it themselves.

Apart from that they all seem to have a good sense of humour and do not appear to be on here just to flog things. They take an active part in the forum even if it does not involve selling.

Is there a problem?

I have just reminded myself of the forum rules for trade members posts.

Businesses - PLEASE READ
If you are (or represent) a business, then we welcome your participation in the forum subject to the following:

1. Your register with your company name or identify your company in your posts.

2. You do not actively sell or promote your products in order to generate commercial gain for your company.

3. No signature links to external websites.

4. You are permitted to respond to user queries or provide expert unbiased advice as well as take part in the general discussion within the forum.
I think some trade posts get rather close to violating rule 2, by reminding people over and over again that they sell a particular product ( to pick one example that just comes to mind: I have had it drummed into me that in Banbury I can get kitted out with a several KW bike for off road use with a switch which limits it to 15.5mph on road and apparently makes it legal there.)

Reading the rules, I think that the advertising function should not be done by trade members stretching a forum topic too far in order to mention their products in posts, but should be strictly confined to paying for a gaudy and sometimes annoying flashing box to appear at the top of the page or alongside the forum threads. Answering specific questions is fair enough, and is permitted according to rule 4.

Andrew, Mike et al,

It is the commercial funding of the forum that makes it possible and if the forum did not have members and guests who bought products, there would be no point in traders continuing to pay for advertising, therefore it would not be the great place it is today.

The big fish with deep pockets who can afford to pay for the big permanently visible adverts down the side and along the top, tend to post infrequently if ever, but they are always on show.

Small fry like myself only get noticed when we post, and if all followed Frank's unofficial code of ethics, then I can't see why anyone should complain. It is quite obvious to see when an officially registered trader is posting and quite easy to ignore or disagree what is being written.

40% of traffic to my website comes from the forum, even if it was only 1%, I would still post here because I love it.

Finally, can I just say that if anyone has a complaint about my posts, their content, frequency or I am selling rubbish and my service is terrible, please let me know openly or privately and I will take it onboard, feedback, positive or negative is essential.

Thank you;)

Thank you for your comments Frank. I can sense some people thinking that there is some "back scratching" going on in this thread, but only you and I know that is not the case, just mutal respect between traders.

and those post where someone wants a bike for onroad/offroad/underwater with variable frame sizes so it can be ridden by various members of the family and the old granny who lives next door - oh yeah .. and it HAS to have a throttle (preferrably red)
And the even more common variant, - - - - - it must be able to climb the steepest hills without pedalling, have a very long range and be light enough to pedal without power and feel like a normal bike.

and it will be perfect if it comes with a 10 year battery warranty, cost £500 spreadable with 12 interest free instalments, will be abailable thoughout off licence stores round the corner and for additional £4.99 will have your name engraved on the frame.

and lastly if you buy one you get another one free so the wife is happy too :D

all the best
Andrew
