Annoying click

Ah well, after a couple of weeks, my brand new BATRIBIKE TRIKE has developed a really annoying click when pedalling. The click is very loud and distinct and always occurs at the same crank position on the left hand pedal. I can definitely hear and indeed feel it in the pedal itself when pushing hard. However, when I get off the bike there is no play in the pedal bearing or the main crank bearings at the point where the click occurs!

How can this be? Any ideas from the engineers amongst us?

My first thought is one of the cogs on the chain ring could be slightly bent and when it first grabs the chain or releases it could click. just a thought.

HI Jazper53,

Hmmm.... see what you are saying and I definitely wasn't thinking chain or cog, so worth a look. The click is there on every crank revolution, so I was assuming it wouldn't be the chain but it can, of course be the cog. Having said that, the click really does feel as if it is inside the pedal itself. In the cold light of tomorrow I'll check out the cog itself.

Thanks for your help.

Could be the Magnet ring on the crank sensor.(assuming there is one ...)
If there is,you can usually give them a wiggle to move it away from the sensor...if this works, remove it all and insert a shim or washer behind it to stop it happening again.
That's my best guess i'm afraid.
Hi Martin. Sounds plausible, if I knew what you were referring to :(. I am totally new to ebikes. Don't s'pose you can link me to a picture of what it might look like?

Thanks for trying to help.

IZIP Electric Bikes - IZIP Parts - Webel892 Psa Sensor
the disc with 4 or more magnets
the magnetic ring can be located behind the chainring

Sounds like it could be the pedal bearing if not the bottom bracket, also do not rule out the possibility of a loose spoke!

Hi jackhandy,

I can't feel any play in the main crank bearings at any part of the revolution, so I ass-u-me so :)

You said it! Time to get your socket set out and torque up the nut in the crank. You won't feel any play when rotating by hand.

If its a new bike get out the tools and check every nut, bolt and wheel spoke, once a GOOD engineer has done this you will possiby find the bike runs like a good one!!! and for many years.

If you suspect the pedal , swap that pedal for a spare and see if the noise is still there . If you haven`t a spare the 99P Shop has them in yellow and black . Don`t forget the pedal thread though ie different for L and R .

Had exactly the same problem on my Dawes when it was brand new. After several attempts (under warranty) to sort it the retailer agreed it must be the bottom bracket bearing (I think it's a cassette nowadays), and changed it. No further problems. You'll have to sort it, it's like the Chinese water torture!

This sounds very similar to a problem we have faced many a time. it sounds to me like it is the square on the pedal arm has bent sligtly, so every time the pedal goes around, it moves and makes a click/creaking sound. 2 ways to fix this. either put a generous amount of locktight onto the bottom bracket axle and bolt that holds it on, or get a new set of pedal arms and put them on as tight as you can get it without using grease.

Good luck

probably a dumb question but what do the supplier / Batribike suggest ?

This sounds to me like it is most likely either the pedal itself or the crank that is not fully tightened to the correct torque. If it is only two weeks old I would refer the problem to the shop you bought the Trike off. I have a Batribike and the shop I bought it from did a full PDI before I took delivery and then a free check at six weeks. Their service was brilliant (as is the bike) so I would have thought it sensible to talk to them first.

I think you are right, I need to talk to Velospeed......... I'll see if I can sort a spare pedal first though.....

To trace this fault you need to work by a process of elimination. First torque the crank bolt. Then try the bike. Still clicking? Borrow a pedal off the wife`s bike and temporarily fit that. If the bike has more than one front chain wheel, try it on a different one. Let us know results.
