Need help choosing a bike for 19 mile commute

You commit the same offence running any ebike with any motor that assists above 15,5mph. Rightly or wrongly, many of us take a view along the lines that using a derestricted legal bike or an S-Pedelec responsibly is acceptable. No one has ever been nicked for that as far as I can tell, but...

Bike Purchase Advice - 22 Mile (one way) Commute

The Oxygen rides nicely, and if the gears behave themselves you should be pleased with it. A change of tyres may be needed, looks like the stock Kendas are 30 tpi - threads per inch - which is cheap and nasty compared to Schwalbe who use 67 tpi. Your bike may turn up with something different...

Both bikes are basic, with basic ebike bits. No harm in that, they should both be easy to fix as observed earlier in the thread. Kudos has a good name on here - the owner Dave is a member. Service, should you need it, is likely to be good, and certainly any amount better than from a 'no...

Soundwave, the OP has a budget of £800. There is no point in posting pics of £2,000 bikes.

    What chain 11 speed?

Some suggestion motorcycle lube is not ideal for a push bike as it's too thick. Lots of competing chain lube methods. Light oil and a regular wipe with rag is probably as good as any.

Bike Purchase Advice - 22 Mile (one way) Commute

I'm not sure where the NuVinci hub fits in given that you were not considering a NuVinci bike. Dave and his magic maintenance free derailer might come as a surprise to Andy Bluenoes and georgehenry on here, both commuters, both of whom have made many posts about pratting around with derailer...

    What chain 11 speed?

Unless you've missed some noughts off your mileage figures you seem to be eating chains. That being the case, the obvious answer for a replacement is the cheapest one. I'd be inclined to look into buying a bulk workshop roll of chain.

you tube just shat on every small channel

Now I understand why the OP peppers threads on here with irrelevant videos - made by him. If the new rules stop that it will be a bonus.

Newbie from Brighton - any advice re folding e bike for train

Humping anything other than a Brompton on and off a train every day is not a realistic option. But there is hope. The Nano conversion is neat, and starts from £1,900 with a small battery. The battery is in the front bag, so you would need to unclip the bag, sling it over your shoulder, fold...

Bike Purchase Advice - 22 Mile (one way) Commute

The no maintenance derailer gear experienced by d8 will raise a few eyebrows among the many cyclists who can never get the sodding things just right for any length of time. Having said that, my derailer ebike has only requred a couple of tweeks to keep it shifting smoothly, albeit that bike...

Agreed - you have to cut your cloth. A trade member in this thread recommended trying a Bosch bike, a bit daft given the OP's budget would barely stretch to a Bosch battery. I had an idle look at a Somerby in Halfords the other day. No point in pretending it excited me, but given the OP's...

any impressions on the Carrera Crossfuse (or the Bosch Active Line Plus)?

The Bosch motor on the Carrera is Bosch's lower power one. Worth trying the Haibike/Yamaha, you should notice a difference. A Bosch bike with one of their small front ring motors will have about the same amount of poke as a Yamaha bike. Having said that, no legal ebike is a ball of fire so it...

    Badass fitting problem

You could get a correct speed reading from a Garmin, or a basic trip computer. If you go the latter route, get a wired one because some of the wireless ones don't work on an ebike. No need for anything fancy, this one would do the job...

Bike Purchase Advice - 22 Mile (one way) Commute

I've only ridden rack battery ebikes for a couple of short test rides, but I didn't find them as tail happy as I thought I would. You make a good point about the Thorn being designed to carry lots of weight and handle properly. A rack battery would enable you to use the downtube bottle cage...

Bike Purchase Advice - 22 Mile (one way) Commute

The Cube's a bit more mountain bikey than would be ideal. But it does have suitable tyres, durable shallow tread Super Moto X, and the hub gearing is a very big plus for a commuter. It's also a blank canvas. All Cubes I've seen have plenty of bosses, so the OP could fit mudguards and a rack...

Very clever, but try and fit a mudguard on it.

    Gazelle or Kalkhoff

Flecc, at the risk of thread drift, I was told some owners ran their enclosed chain bikes with liquid oil in the bottom of the guard. In other words, the chain ran through a shallow puddle of oil all the time. Can you confirm if that was so?

    Gazelle or Kalkhoff

Chains, technically, do not stretch - you cannot stretch steel. What happens is that due to grit and grime, each link bearing acquires a tiny bit of play. These tiny amounts of play add up over the length of the chain to give the effect of elongating it - commonly called stretch. A chain...

    Badass fitting problem

They might be now, but that wasn't always the case. When I sold my Rose, I removed the dongle and thought I would fit it on the AVE MH7. It wouldn't fit as the OP described. I found something online about some sensors having insulation and removing it. Whatever, what can't speak can't lie -...

whats the best method of carrying a spare dolphin battery please?

I have carried a battery in my twenty quid Edinburgh Bicycles panniers with no problems. They might be a bit sturdier than the Aldi ones. And I try to avoid numps, kerbs, and the like. I've also carried a battery in my smaller and even cheaper Halfords panniers. That wasn't quite so...
