Anyone know of an Electric Bike Shop near Preston/Lancashire ?

Re Blackpool Electric Bikes, I haven't been in the shop even though it's half a mile from me, but when I was looking around they were really quick and helpful in replying to emails - certainly worth getting in touch. There are usually half a dozen or so bikes on display outside the shop, which...

    Ebike on train

The main operators in the OP's area are Northern and Transpennine (TPE). Northern say no 'power-assisted' bikes, while TPE say no 'motorised' bikes. I've never tried to take my ebike on a train, but my experience of bikes on Northern suggests that they're unlikely to be bothered unless the...

why are non cyclists not interested?

...and my post was absolutely not intended in a negative way. I'm fortunate to still have full mobility and I hope it continues for many years to come, but I know I can't take that for granted - one of the great things about ebikes is that for many mobility or health issues you can still be just...

why are non cyclists not interested?

There's also the cost thing; most people with no knowledge of cycling will regard £100 as the right price for a bike, and £200 as about the upper limit. When you can get a roadworthy car for £1000 an ebike looks expensive; and people conveniently ignore the maintenance and repair costs of a car...

    Is my Kalkhoff performing right?

I agree with some other posters - you're probably pedalling slowly in a high gear, change down so that you're pedalling a bit faster and more smoothly. My Giant does much the same; I think its software tries to smooth out the pedal strokes to give a constant level of assistance, but it...

    Giant - battery meter discrepancy

...and the final update. I ran the bike until flat this morning, then put the battery on charge - and the meter now seems to be working! So thanks for the advice. However - I've since noticed that the plastic membrane around the button on the battery meter has split, so it may be that water's...

    Giant - battery meter discrepancy

Quick update - I rode home with no problems, with quite a vicious headwind at times; the battery meter on the control unit went down to three bars as I'd expect, so it looks like it's just the meter on the battery itself. Will discharge it and see what happens.

    Giant - battery meter discrepancy

Thanks for the suggestions - assuming I get home OK it looks like Easter's going to be a good time to run the battery right down - I live in Blackpool so can just go up and down the prom for as long as it takes. I'll feedback how it goes; the worry for me, as flecc suggests, is that it's...

    Giant - battery meter discrepancy

Hi - I've got a 2013 Giant Twist Esprit Power, which has a hub motor and a single 36V 10AH battery on top of the rack. This morning after riding to work there's a discrepancy between the two battery meters which has me a bit worried! There's a meter on the display / control unit which shows up...

    Bike Mirrors

Another vote here for the Zefal products - my preference is the 'Spin', which is very discreet and folds out of the way. I've also got a 'Dooback', which is much bigger but still folds. You'll see passionate arguments about mirrors on cycling forums, some seem to believe that they're the work...

Electric bike road safety & security

Great in theory but in practice two things can happen: 1. The bypass becomes cluttered with gravel, broken glass, wet leaves etc 2. People park cars either side of the island blocking access to the cycle bypass lane - mainly because they're thick and selfish.

    Blind spot

The comment about companies paying more attention to health and safety (i.e. on-site) risk than road risk is very telling; most construction sites wouldn't allow a truck to reverse without a banksman, yet on the road that would be accepted. I know it's not the issue here, but the point is there...

    Tyre Experts

To add to the list - I too have had trouble with Continentals, this time Sport Contacts - though I had my doubts about them from the start, suspect they were old stock. Marathon Plus is now my tyre of choice, except on the front of my rigid MTB/Hybrid, where I use a Schwalbe Big Apple...

Discussing the Option and Ideas to safer cycling.

I think shared space can work where all road users have to negotiate - so in the video above motor vehicles have to negotiate with each other. The example in Blackpool doesn't work because it's a straight through route and drivers just make their own lanes and follow each other - happily...

    Another cyclist dies in London

An excellent summary of how we got where we are now, thanks. Go to many bike retailer websites and you're expected to choose between 'Road' and 'MTB' - while what we would call a 'bicycle' is referred to as a 'hybrid'. It's no such thing - it's a bicycle! The MTB and Road bike (and...

    Thinking of a Giant

I have a 2012 Twist Esprit Power, but the man's version - as you say, much of the spec is unchanged - the most visible difference is that mine has a horizontal battery on the top of the rack, whereas the 2011 has the vertical mount. I've done 2500 miles on mine and the only problem I've had has...

Terrifying near miss at level crossing

One difference of course is that a tram is driven by line of sight, whereas trains rely wholly on the signalling system and an assumption that the line isn't obstructed. The poor driver is helpless if there's something in his/her way. Trams need longer braking distances than cars, but still...

    Commuting - Kalkhoff Xion?

Speaking as someone with similar experience, but without the hills, I think you're right to insist on the front hub motor / rear IGH from a longevity point of view - I have a pedelec with that combination (7-speed Nexus) and also a conventional bike with an 8-speed Alfine. Wear on the...

    Giant Twist Esprit Power (2013)

Purchased From: Fulford Cycles (via ebay) Purchase Price: £1100 (List £1699) Time Owned: 2 months (600 miles) Local Terrain: Mainly flat, but windy Background: I’m nearly 50, and I’ve been cycling to work 10 miles each way for an average of three days a week; it would have been more if it...
