Pedalling hard downhill has got to be one of the most demoralising aspects of bike riding. The plan was to go to Seaford and up through Alfriston, around the underside of Arlington reservoir, Hailsham, then home. I'd already decided if it was too windy I'd probably cut it short at the Cuckmere...

Only 16 miles this morning and forgot to put MMR on  Got up, over, and just west of Beachy Head. The wind was absolutely brutal, and actually quite cold. So I thought 'what am I doing?..'. And then it started to rain  No rain forecast and I'm sure it's a bloody sight windier...

Went out in an old pair of shorts. Turned out to be the wrong ones as about ten miles out, once I'd got some blood in my muscles, they were like a tourniquet. I've got the next two weeks off on leave. My wife's gone to Perth, Australia, so it's just me and tortoise (plus two adult kids who I...

It's quite disconcerting how easy it is to get close to the edge very quickly  But you're quite right - no left turn! On a serious note, I used to work for the Fire Brigade. We had a line rescue crew, and I used to write the Chief Fire Officer's reports to the Public Protection...

    Pet hates?

I'd like to add: Getting flies land on your glasses when you're riding. Usually in your line of vision. Bloody freeloaders! Gaz

Full suspension for part road use any good?

That's a very expensive bike, even if it's worth every penny  In my opinion. Gaz

There's a dip between Beachy Head and Belle Tout which was quite steep - that was where a bunny wabbit had set a clever trap for me  I'd never been quite so close to Belle Tout before - really fabulous views up there. Must take water with me tomorrow  Gaz

Not really, but I ride very cautiously around walkists and give as wide a berth as possible. I got a couple of funny looks, but to be honest, once I'd crashed down the first rabbit dugout my mind was elsewhere. Been out across the marshes too this afternoon. 45 miles in total today. Left...

Think I need to ride it through a WD40 sheep dip  Gaz Talking of which, I was once told that Water Disperser 40 (Rocket Fuel) is not actually the best because it has a water base, and while it does the trick in the immediacy, the damp will come back quicker.

Just downloaded it and used it for the first time today. I'll be blowed if I can work out how to put up a link on here to show a pretty picture of the route and stats though. It must be obvious. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Ta Gaz

    Very disappointing start....

Just thinking out loud but could the effect of taking the chain off hide what's going on if it needs the chain in place to allow enough pressure on the pedals to show it up, rather than it being conclusive that the vibration is being conducted along the chain? I'm no cycle mechanic though, so...

Full suspension for part road use any good?

If the bike's worth it and you can taughten up the rear suspension, then I don't see why not. I've come from no suspension to front suspension and my wrist really likes it. Let's face it, our roads are rarely linoleum smooth these days. I'd imagine choice of tyre would be particularly...

    Very disappointing start....

Joking aside, isn't it worth checking the bearings and re-packing them with grease? There's only a limited number of moving parts that'll cause vibration and one ball bearing that's out of true or has a compromised surface can cause all sorts of rumblings. And not get any worse (necessarily)...
