Riding on level ground v hills

Give me the variety of hills any day, rougher surfaces are also a lot more tiring.

    50mph is for girls.

It helps if you unplug your brain at the top. In hindsight it was probably a tad risky, there are sunken manhole covers somewhere on the descent, I just couldn't quite remember where. You would not believe the speeds some Strava users attain on some of the single-track descents around these...

    50mph is for girls.

It was, I rolled into it looking at the view, kind of wish I'd hammered it round the top corner just to have bagged a downhill KOM, fastest time is just 4 seconds faster, which would have been easy on that day.

Or get Guy Martin to ride the bike ;)

Indeed, I reached my top speed just beyond the segment end, some very heavy braking was required at the bottom to make it round the bend in one piece.

    50mph is for girls.

Yes it's an old railway incline that was part of the Cromford and High Peak railway. The wind was blowing exactly the right way too.

I forgot to say mine was real.

Not quite as fast, and a GPS speed. Sadly my Bosch display isn't much use, those in the know will know why.

My new top speed: Vol 2

Uk Cycling Events Devils MTB 17th May 2014

I passed about 40 riders up one hill, then sat at the top to give them a clap and some encouragement :) some looked the other way when they got near. If I do ever get well enough to do an event I'd have to not go any higher than Tour setting to stand any chance of going the distance, that should...

Uk Cycling Events Devils MTB 17th May 2014

I had a play with the long route Wiggle Tour of the peak riders today. Some are fine, others not so. I would like to have a go one day, but I'm not up to even the shortest distance, and I'm not good with such early starts to the day. A 30ah battery would be handy too.

Almost died and almost got physical later

Sadly it happens all the time. Just 10 weeks more for actually killing a cyclist. The attitude is disgusting. http://www.buxtonadvertiser.co.uk/news/local/death-driver-locked-up-1-6552475

You had a lucky escape, unlike a local rider recently. http://www.buxtonadvertiser.co.uk/news/local/lorry-driver-jailed-for-hayfield-hit-and-run-1-6613896

    Best electric bikes under 2000

I couldn't live with that, can't you wire a simple kill switch that is easily pressed with your thumb to briefly cut the power?

    Crank drive or otherwise?

I'd better start training on my sprinting ability then :) me and the bike don't sprint very well, what with my lack of power and the soft start of my Hub gear compatible Bosch motor. My segment time above of 12.58 drops to a truly pedestrian 30.19 on my light ish unpowered bike !

    Crank drive or otherwise?

As I was typing it I did think about the more powerful hub motored bikes, wondering just how quickly they'd do it. That ride did get through the battery very quickly last night, that's the thing isn't it, it's all a compromise, I think my bike gets closest to being reasonably fast, with...

Crank drive lets you beat the Pro riders too :)

Eddie has touched on that point, it seems that it is that initial kick that gives the impression of speed. However he has said he goes faster on the Strava segments on the Bosch bike despite it feeling slower.

    Bosch trekking / touring bikes?

The Sram Dual drive is certainly interesting and rare, however I would question the need for that many gears on an e-bike. My Nexus 8 covers all my needs from the steepest hills to 36 mph flat road riding. Although my steepest hills would be hard work without full assistance. Adverts these days...
